Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: "A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear." 2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace July 16, 2017 Dear Friends, If you are on the parish grounds at all during 9AM to 4PM you will hear a lot of holy noise. It is the sounds of around 400 kids and youth who are taking part in our Summer Oratory. It is something that takes place every year and I wanted to share a little bit with you about where it comes from, what is the aim and what does it try to accomplish. The Oratory is something that was carried out in a particular way by St. Philip Neri in the 1500 s and also St. John Bosco some 300 years later. The spirit of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri was a formative environment that was authentically human. St. John Paul II explains: Even if in the streets he met suffering humanity, and comforted and sustained it with the charity of a wise and very human word, he preferred to gather young people in the Oratory, his true invention! He made it a place of joyful meeting, a training ground for formation, a center of artistic enlightenment. It was in the Oratory that St Philip, together with cultivating piety in its traditional and new expressions, undertook to reform and elevate art, restoring it to the service of God and the Church. Convinced as he was that beauty leads to goodness, he brought all that had an artistic stamp within the realm of his educational project. And he himself became a patron of various artistic forms, promoting sound initiatives that led to truth and goodness. (JPII, 7 October 1994) The Oratory is an environment that is religiously fervent and morally healthy, that engages the youth in his whole personhood (intellect and will, body and soul) in order to direct them with depth and decisiveness in order to possess the heavenly life in a religious climate, of friendliness, happiness, and freedom. The very first oratory of St. John Bosco in Valdoco was for his youth the following: a house that welcomes and hosts; a parish that shares the Gospel; a school that is accessible for those who have difficulties in other places; a patio where they can share friendship and joy. The Oratory is not merely a meeting to teach Catechism and Religious Education, with some aspect of recreation; and much less, is it simply play time that throws in a little bit of religion here and there. It is a form of preservation, of redemption, of human and Christian salvation of the youth, especially in those who are abandoned. In other words, it seeks to fulfill the function of a comprehensive educational environment that encompasses all young people, who must find the possibility of developing their qualities and interests. It is an authentic form of education. St. John Bosco himself explains to the members of his community: an Oratory deserves our full recognition and support. We want many, many children and young people to frequent and love it; we would even like a work like this to multiply and prosper where it already exists or arise where it does not yet exist, with each parish. We can understand, from the Rules and Procedure written by Don Bosco, that he wants them to understand and learn about holy feasting. The true form of Christian Joy that seeks to rejoice and live in the presence of God and Brethren in a holy way, with a holy purpose and filled with joy. He explains: the purpose of the Oratory is to entertain the youth on feast days with fun activities, after having participated in and attended the sacred functions of church. St. John Bosco sees it as a way in which those who are abandoned by a good family life or good friends may find them in the Oratory, which means of course for all people involved the battle for souls a noble and worthwhile endeavor indeed. He says: The educational purpose of the Oratory is substantially fixed in these terms: to give abandoned youth a friend who watches over them, to assist them and to instruct them in religion. It is a work of education that is specific and true, with an individual redeeming effectiveness and broad social reach.. In other words, the goal of the oratory consists in forming good Christians and upright citizens. All in all, let us give thanks to the sisters here at Our Lady of Peace for their tremendous work with the Summer Oratory and the one that goes on throughout the year. Let us give thanks to the Seminarians and Novice Sisters who have traveled from the East Coast to help provide this experience for our youth and children. Above all, however, let us pray that the seeds that are being sown throughout this month of July may take root and form courageous and joy-filled disciples of Jesus Christ and loving children of the Blessed Virgin Mary! Modesty in Clothing Please be mindful, especially during these hot days, of modesty in clothing when dressing for Holy Mass. One s attire should not distract from another s prayer. Appropriate apparel should not be tight-fitting or revealing (for both men and women). Our attention should be focused towards the Lord. Thank you for your attention to this matter. If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. 3 main reasons why registering is important: 1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register. 2. Registering in the parish makes Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. Infant baptisms, religious education registration, being a godparent/sponsor for baptisms or confirmations, and especially getting married whether you are getting married at this parish, another parish, or having an international Catholic wedding. If you re not a registered parishioner this will greatly delay the process. 3. Letters of Recommendation Sometimes there are occasions where letters of recommendations are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment, scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you re not registered, we cannot provide this letter to you or your family. Anyone, regardless of where they live and even though the Diocese is divided into parish geographical areas, is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding preparation paperwork will not be processed within the 3 months. Registering is easy! Responsibilities include planning and implementing innovative lessons aligned to standards; good communication skills; use of technology to support student learning; differentiated instruction to meet all learners needs; positive classroom management. A teaching credential is preferable as is classroom teaching experience. K-8 Music Teacher. This is a job share position with St. Edward School, Newark, or a part-time, single school position. The person would need to be able to teach Kindergarteners through eighth graders skills in music understanding/appreciation, harmony, explorations in music and choral music. Band & Strings Director. We have a small band class and small strings class that are run on Wednesdays from 2-5 pm.
