2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace December 23, 2018 Dear Friends, As we are just a couple of days away from the Solemnity of The Nativity of the Lord, please allow me to anticipate the day by expressing on behalf of the priests, sisters and staff at Our Lady of Peace our desire and prayer that you may all have a gracefilled and spiritually fruitful Christmas. Fulton Sheen once insightfully wrote, Divinity is always where you least expect to find it. It was true then (2000 years ago), it is true now. Some 750 years prior to the birth of Jesus, through the prophet Isaiah, God made mention of this, For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways. (Is 55:8) Divine revelation does not follow worldly rules. God, as author of them, is highly respectful of natural laws, but does not conform to the games of worldly men. As Pope Benedict XVI explains, Divine revelation is not brought about in accordance with earthly logic, which holds that cultured and powerful people possess important knowledge and pass it on to simpler people, to little ones. God used a quite different approach: those to whom his communication was addressed were, precisely, babes. This is the Father s will, and the Son shares it with him joyfully. (General Audience, December 7, 2011) Who would think to look for the Son of God in a stable, amongst beasts of burden, ignored and forgotten? How can it be that the Son of Man is simply the Son of a carpenter, obediently living and working under the guidance of a foster father and virgin mother? Who could expect to see or understand the Divine One tried like a criminal, expelled from the city as a cross-laden outcast, and crucified like a thief? Indeed, divinity is always where you least expect to find it. For this reason, we must train our eyes and our ears, our minds and our hearts to look beyond the surface of things. So that we can, with Bl. John Henry Newman, understand that when the Eternal Son came on earth in our flesh,... He showed Himself no longer through the mere powers of nature, or the maze of human affairs, but in our own likeness to Him. God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of [Jesus] Christ; [2 Cor. iv. 6.]... He then began to speak to us as individuals. He, on the one hand, addressed each of us on the other. Thus, it was in some sense a revelation face to face. (A Newman Reader, serm. 9) As the shepherds and Magi traveled through the cold of winter, prompted by divine intervention, they were brought before the Son of God and fell to their knees in adoration, gazing upon the Creator of the world and the Savior of mankind. In a similar fashion, Eucharistic adoration can be our personal Bethlehem event. As the Catechism teaches, contemplation is a gaze of faith, fixed on Jesus. This focus on Jesus, it states, is a renunciation of self. His gaze purifies our heart; the light of the countenance of Jesus illumines the eyes of our heart and teaches us to see everything in the light of his truth and his compassion for all men. (CCC 2715) We come to gaze upon He who Has come, He who is among us, He who is with us always, until the end of the age. (Cf., Mt 28,20) Needless to say, the Birth of the Child Savior, the Emmanuel (God-with-us), already says it all. A child has been born to us, a son has been given to us, say the prophecies. It is a gift. On Christmas, gifts are given because we remember the Great Gift, the Great Gift that God has given us: He has opened for us the doors of Heaven in the Person of His Son, Jesus Christ. That is the Immense Gift that all men receive today poor and rich and without which, all, poor and rich, are equally miserable. Christmas must serve us to renew our lives, strengthen our convictions and convert us once more. Let us ask the Child of Bethlehem to open our hearts to his blessing: the blessing of bringing us the life of grace. May the Blessed Virgin obtain for us, through her intercession, this undeserved grace. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Holy Days of Obligation The Christmas Solemnity on Tuesday, December 25th is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God on Tuesday, January 1st is not a day of obligation as it has been dispensed by the Diocese of San Jose. Annual Nativity Diorama All are invited to visit the Nativity Diorama in room 1101 in the Family Learning Center. Take some time this Christmas season to prayerfully enjoy this unique display! Walk for Life Family Registration Families can receive a reduced rate for their children for Walk for Life 2019 registration. Total Pledged due to campaign: $391,450.15, which is 31% over goal If all pledges are honored by the end of this month, the parish would receive $92, in kickback for facilities improvements. As of November, however, $51, of the total pledged has not been turned in. If you have met your pledge, thank you for helping us meet/exceed goal. Remember that your offerings are tax-deductible and you should receive tax statements from the Diocese directly. If you have not yet met your pledge, it is NOT TOO LATE! Please remit your balance or what you can to complete your pledge and take advantage of end-of-year tax write-offs. Do not be late! 5:30pm It takes awhile to leave the streets of San Francisco, but the bus should arrive before 5:30pm latest. How to prepare: You will receive route/bus instructions on the day of the walk. Just make sure you get to OLOP before the bus leaves and that you plan to return on the bus on time. Bring comfortable walking shoes, a bagged lunch, and bottled water. We walk rain or shine, so check weather conditions to plan accordingly. Don t worry - even the one year it rained buckets, it was a great experience.
