2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace July 23, 2017 Dear Friends, Do you know what it means to be great? Something is great when it exceedingly goes beyond what is normal or average, when it is so noteworthy that it changes the way that we see reality, the way we live, the way we talk, the way we act. It took me quite a while to realize that the fashionable acronym GOAT that pops up next to so many people s names now-a-days, does not refer to a hardy domesticated ruminant animal that has backward curving horns and (in the male) a beard, but that it stands for Greatest of All Time. We are perpetually looking to experience, be a part of, or involve ourselves with true greatness. As we find ourselves in the Valley of the Startup and in the Land of Innovation, so many sacrifice of their time and of their God-given talent to achieve greatness in a given field. Man, however, has been innovating or achieving greatness throughout his existence, and this dates all the way back to the invention of the wheel. None of this stuff, however, should be or could be a true measure of man s greatness or the measure of a society s greatness, because in the end it is something more or less normal, average that man is able to come up with new ideas and put them into action. The things that we put on or use may be verily marketed as the latest and greatest, but what about man himself? Ven. Fulton Sheen, as always, has a beautiful reflection about man s greatness, or his modernday lack thereof. He says: There is a famine abroad on the earth, a famine not of bread, for we have had too much of that and our luxury has made us forget God; a famine not of gold, for the glitter of so much of that has blinded us to the meaning of the twinkle of the stars; but a famine of a more serious kind, and one which threatens nearly every country in the world the famine of really great men. In other words, the world today is suffering from a terrible nemesis of mediocrity. We are dying of ordinariness; we are perishing from our pettiness. The world s greatest need is great men, someone who will understand that there is no greater conquest than victory over oneself; someone who will realize that the real worth is achieved, not so much by activity, as by silence; someone who will seek the Kingdom of God and His justice, and put into actual practice the law that it is only by dying to the life of the body that we ever live to the life of the spirit; someone who will brave the taunts of a Good Friday to win the joy of Easter Sunday; who will, like a lightning-flash, burn away the bonds of feeble interests which tie down our energies to the world; who, with a fearless voice, like John the Baptist, will arouse our enfeebled nature out of the sleek dream of unheroic repose; who will gain victories, not by stepping down from the Cross and compromising with the world, but who will suffer in order to conquer the world. In a word, what we need are saints, for saints are the truly great men. I assume without further ado that the grace of God is the one thing necessary, and that God will give that grace to those who do His will. (F. Sheen, The World s Greatest Need (Address delivered January 31, 1932) Everyone is seeking greatness. Everyone wants to be involved with something truly groundbreaking, something truly innovative, something truly great. This should not surprise us. The human spirit longs for greatness; in fact, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI says that: Man was created for greatness for God Himself. (Spe Salvi, n. 33) Man s heart, according to St. Augustine must be stretched and cleansed in order to be filled with the honey that God wants to instill within us. Oftentimes, however, God finds man s heart to be small, inflexible, and filled with vinegar. And so, asks St. Augustine, Suppose that God wishes to fill you with honey [a symbol of God's tenderness and goodness and consequently man s greatness]; but if you are full of vinegar, where will you put the honey? The vessel must be enlarged and cleansed, freed from the residue of vinegar, and elastic so that greater and greater amounts of honey can be received. This does not come automatically; however, greatness has a price. Hard work and pain is a requirement, but in this way alone do we become fit for greatness do we become suited to that for which we are destined. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Heat/Warm Weather Warning Summer is here and with high temperatures people can experience heat stress. Here are some tips that may help prevent heat stress. Hydrate drink plenty of water (water is acceptable within the one hour of fasting for communion). Rest get enough sleep and rest if you feel tired. Shade find shade to rest if you are outside. Modesty in Clothing Please be mindful of modesty in clothing when dressing for Holy Mass. One s attire should not distract from another s prayer. Appropriate apparel should not be tight-fitting or revealing (for both men and women). Please see the rest of the bulletin for more information.

If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. 3 main reasons why registering is important: 1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register. 2. Registering in the parish makes Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. Infant baptisms, religious education registration, being a godparent/sponsor for baptisms or confirmations, and especially getting married whether you are getting married at this parish, another parish, or having an international Catholic wedding. If you re not a registered parishioner this will greatly delay the process. 3. Letters of Recommendation Sometimes there are occasions where letters of recommendations are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment, scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you re not registered, we cannot provide this letter to you or your family. Anyone, regardless of where they live and even though the Diocese is divided into parish geographical areas, is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding preparation paperwork will not be processed within the 3 months. Looking for a New Year s Resolution?
