2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace May 27, 2018 Dear Friends, This is my commandment that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love than this no one has, that one lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:12-13) Once a year, on Memorial Day, grateful Americans bless and pray for the souls of our military departed, from the American Revolution to the War of 1812, to Pearl Harbor, and most recently the Global War on Terror. Over a million and a half servicemen and women have fought and died in our wars and battles, and in service to our country over the many years. And because each life is of such precious worth before God, each one deserves to be remembered and honored individually, even though we honor them collectively. A soldier deserves our esteem and our prayers because when he joins the armed forces he has the intention of making the supreme sacrifice, and surely Our Lord has the fallen soldier in mind when He said Greater love than this no one has than one lay down his life for his friend. In this light, there is a close and beautiful association between the death of a soldier and the death of Christ. As Veteran s Day honors those veterans who survived their time of service, the purpose of Memorial Day is to honor those who died in service. Fundamentally, when one takes the enlistment oath for U.S. Armed Service, the individual places service before self. They are supporting and defending the country they love and protecting ideals, which serve as the foundation of freedom, for a better and more secure future for their family, friends, and even total strangers. Tomorrow, we are reminded about how grateful we must be for those who gave their lives for our freedom. It is also important for us to be reminded to honor their sacrifice by the we live our lives. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln, in the famed Gettysburg Address, helps us to have an acute awareness of our task in honoring them: The world... can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us-that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion-that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain-that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom-and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth. God has blessed these United States of America down through the years and through many wars because when our freedom was challenged courageous, generous and selfless men and women have responded. A soldier gives his life to insure the safety and the welfare of his native land. American Historian George Bancroft says that the soldier dies, to set deep the pillars in the structure of our national life. For this reason, as they went forth under the Stars and Stripes, they fought for our freedom. Freedom that embraces responsibility and is guided by reason and virtue, rather than license which is to choose without restraint or do as we feel. We have a duty to honor our soldiers who fought and died for our freedom. Therefore, we must use this freedom to grow in virtue, not squandering it on vain or superficial pursuits. Let us, in honoring the sacrifice of fallen soldiers, who have names and families, strive to be searchers of the truth and lovers of the good, men and women of character, who form and raise our families, educate our children, and fulfill our duty as citizens of the United States, but above all, as disciples of Jesus Christ. Lastly, and most importantly, St. Thomas Aquinas reminds us that there is no greater act of love we can perform on behalf of one who has died, than to pray for them. Come stop by the exhibit and read about over 150 miracles from around the world. Parish Office Closed The parish office will be closed Monday, May 28th for Memorial Day. Q. 71) Therefore, within the Catholic Church -- the Mystical Body of Christ, let us remember that the Holy Mass is the perpetual Memorial Day, because in every Mass we enjoy a sacred encounter with all the faithful departed and we pray for them. With an extensive assortment of photographs and historical descriptions, the exhibition presents some of the principal Eucharistic Miracles that took place throughout the ages in various countries of the world and which have been recognized by the Church. The current exhibition includes 153 panels that are used to explain 152 Eucharistic Miracles with an additional 22 country and historical panel maps.
