2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace February 4, 2018 Dear Friends, I want to write to you about something that has caused tears of anguish to pour forth from the eyes of countless mothers and fathers, husbands and wives. I want to write to you about an infirmity that sows fear, uncertainty and despair in the mind of many young people at a time of their life ought to be marked by courage, magnanimity, and joy. This is something that keeps a mother or wife up through the night, sacrificing on her knees praying and keeping vigil for her loved ones they have left the faith. It sends a father to his knees, praying day after day before our Lord for his children who freely adopt a life of immorality. It causes a young daughter to cry on account of her mother or father who won t participate in anything dealing with God. It even produces uneasiness and concern within the parents who are responsibly raising their young children in the life of the Church, about what the future holds. These are all things that I see and hear, so I know that for many who read this, this will resonate with you to some degree or another. The thing that I speak of is unbelief. Bl. John Henry Newman once said: Ours is the age of unbelief. He lived throughout the 1800 s. This was a precursor to the time that we are currently living in, the dictatorship of relativism. In the homily preached at the mass celebrated prior to the conclave that elected him pope, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger said: Today, having a clear faith based on the Creed of the Church is often labeled as fundamentalism. Whereas relativism, that is, letting oneself be tossed here and there, carried about by every wind of doctrine, seems the only attitude that can cope with modern times. We are building a dictatorship of relativism that does not recognize anything as definitive and whose ultimate goal consists solely of one's own ego and desires. (Ratzinger, Homily Pro Eligendo Romano Pontifice, 2005) Experience will show that skeptics are not happy or fulfilled. They cannot be, there is no sure ground upon which they may walk. They, by skepticism, isolate themselves from the very thing that unites the truth. To each his own, ultimately places each man on an island. The spirit of unbelief is suspicious of claims of exclusivity or absolutivity. I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the father but by me, this is just not something credible. The one struggling with unbelief or with relativistic views, perhaps does not perceive that his struggle with truth will result in a self-defeating search for happiness. This brings people into collision with themselves, their own nature, which impedes them from the fulfillment of their very nature and their deepest desires. This is the tragedy and consequence of sin. Ultimately, the reasons and causes for this milieu are tragic and many (e.g., from broken or abusive homes, to the objectifying of human beings, to the idolatry of pleasure, to name a few) and hardships that our society is facing are multi-leveled and very complex. In short, thinking about those closest to us, it seems like never before have we seen such unbelief around us. It seems to be reaching new levels and so many are affected by it directly or indirectly. I suffer with you because these are my brothers and sisters, my loved ones too. My concern is for those who are growing up in this environment and for those that are still in the pews we must pray, sacrifice, and work to keep them. My concern is for those who have left we must pray, sacrifice, and work to reach them. My concern is for those who are looking around, to come back or to visit for the first time we must pray, sacrifice and work to receive them. For further details, please see page 6. Friday Family Fun Nights Come join us for the parish family nights each Friday in the Family Learning Center from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. This event is for all ages.

3 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 As complex as the situation may be, the solution is really very simple, not always easy, but simple. God has thrown us a life line, or better, he has fashioned a bridge over which we may cross to safety Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God. We must, however, know who we are in order to know where we must go. And this is what I would like to look into next week. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Lenten Restrictions Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting. Lenten Resources 1. 6 Page 6 Our Lady of Peace February 4, 2018 Dispensation from Abstinence for Friday, February 16th, 2018 The First Day of the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Dog Bishop Patrick McGrath has granted a dispensation from the Lenten discipline of abstinence from meat to all the faithful of the Diocese of San Jose who will be observing Friday, February 16th, the first day of the Asian New Year. Men s Discernment Retreat For Ages Friday, February 16th evening to Sunday, February 18th afternoon. Requirements: Single Catholic male, 18 years and older, recommended by any priest in the Diocese of San Jose. Please contact the Diocese of San Jose Vocation Office for more information. 40 Days for Life Campaign 40 Days for Life Lenten Campaign runs from Ash Wednesday, February 14th, through Palm Sunday, March 25th, Days for Life is a peaceful pro-life effort of volunteer Prayer Warriors and Sidewalk Counselors, committed to protecting women and their unborn children. The campaign consists of Prayer and Fasting, Community Outreach and Peaceful Vigils outside of the abortion mills at local Planned Parenthood clinics.
