2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace June 18, 2017 Dear Friends, The solemnity of Corpus Christi, in its historical and liturgical richness, invites us to reflect upon the very reality of the Eucharist and then to go forth in procession inspiring us to respond to such a gift. The holy mass, the Eucharist,... this is the center of our lives. I prepare myself for this moment with care for my interior life, with my sacrifices, which will be like the bread and wine as they are an offering to be made holy offering to our Lord all that I have, all that I sacrifice in His name (sacrifices in my marriage, in my family, in my faith). I offer myself to him along with the species of bread and wine, which is why we stand up at the offertory, it is not so much that we are making solemn the procession of the gifts of bread and wine, but as I stand, I offer myself along with those gifts. We are not mere spectators, as if we were sitting in front of a television screen (although we approach it with the same apathy at times), but we are actors in this drama. We are in the collection basket being offered up in thanksgiving for all of His gifts to us. We are standing upon the paten with the bread being lifted up to heaven to be made holy. We are in the chalice, with the wine, fruit of the winepress because we are participants in sacrifices necessary for Christian life. Thus, if we understand the Holy Sacrifice of Jesus on the Altar, we understand that we have offered ourselves there too. Do we understand, asks Fulton Sheen, that we must not only receive Communion, but give too? We may not accept life, while giving no sacrifice. The communion line is a place of exchange. The people give time and receive eternity; they give self-denial and receive life; they give nothingness and receive all. Holy Communion commits each to a closer union, not only with Christ s life, but also with His death to greater detachment from this world, to surrender of luxuries for the sake of poor, to death of the old Adam for rebirth in Christ, the new Adam. (Fulton Sheen, The Priest is not His Own) In this way, we become like another incarnation of the Word as we are taught in the Second Vatican Council, Gaudium et Spes (n 22), For by His incarnation the Son of God has united Himself in some fashion with every man. As we set out on foot, on this feast of Corpus Christi, when the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ is solemnly celebrated and brought out into the world, it is fitting that we also understand the missionary aspect involved in our Eucharistic life. We believe in Him, we receive Him and now we are sent! Ite missa est! This is the words of sending that we hear at the end of every mass, which literal translated means: Go forth! The mass is now accomplished! Communion is accomplished in each of us and we bring Him out into the world. Today we do this in the form of a solemn procession with our Eucharistic Lord the savior of the world. The encounter with Christ is not a talent to be buried, but is meant to bear fruit in both word and work. How could the Church fulfill her vocation without cultivating a constant relationship with the Eucharist, without nourishing herself with this food which sanctifies, without founding her missionary activity on this indispensable support? To evangelize the world there is need of apostles who are experts in the celebration, adoration and contemplation of the Eucharist. (John Paul II, Message for the World Missionary Day 2004, 3). The Eucharist can justly be called the bread of mission. We have found the pearl of great price, we have found the secret for which all persons of all ages long for the remedy to death and the gift of everlasting life. If we have truly found this, then we must share it. The Church is Eucharistic and Missionary and we are its members, may we through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, remain faithful to who we are and thus proclaim to the world the truth of Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life. The Knights of Columbus invite for their coffee and donuts sale after the morning masses. Altar Society Bake Sale Will be here on Monday, June 12 at 7 pm to perform a concert in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. All are welcome to this special treat. Corpus Christi Procession After the 2pm mass on June 18 Eucharistic Miracles Exhibit will be up until June 25 located on the front lawn. Sacred Heart Novena Will be at the 5:15 pm masses (started on the 14th) until will be until June 22 with the 5:15 pm mass and then followed by a procession. Fr. Robert Spitzer, SJ will be at OLOP on up on Wednesday, June 21. See page 5 fore more details. Summer Oratory Dinner/Meal Sign-Ups The office needs help filling 8 more dinner sponsor spots for our seminarians and sisters. If you, your family and friends, or parish group would like to help please see page 9 ***Reminder: No meetings in the Family Learning Center for the whole month of JULY - Please plan accordingly. If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. 3 main reasons why registering is important: 1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register. 2. Registering in the parish makes Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. Infant baptisms, religious education registration, being a godparent/sponsor for baptisms or confirmations, and especially getting married whether you are getting married at this parish, another parish, or having an international Catholic wedding. If you re not a registered parishioner this will greatly delay the process. 3. Letters of Recommendation Sometimes there are occasions where letters of recommendations are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment, scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you re not registered, we cannot provide this letter to you or your family. Anyone, regardless of where they live and even though the Diocese is divided into parish geographical areas, is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding preparation paperwork will not be processed within the 3 months. Registering is easy! Visit the Parish Office, call the Rectory Office ( ) or us (info@olop-shrine.org) to request a registration form. Looking for a New Year s Resolution? 6 Page 6 Our Lady of Peace June 18, 2017 August 2017 Iconography Workshop The next iconography workshop at St. Basil the Great Byzantine Catholic Church in Los Gatos will be held on the weekends of August 4 to 6 and 11 to 13, Our teacher will be Mr. Raymond Vincent. The icon that will be painted for this workshop is the Theotokos of the Sign, the line drawing for which is shown to the left. (Completed versions can be found on the internet.) This workshop is especially aimed at high school and college students, so please help spread the word about the workshop, which is a rare opportunity in this area. The cost for the workshop is $330, which includes a $75 non-refundable deposit. (Please see the registration form for the refund policy.) The cost for the workshop also includes four meals, breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday, plus refreshments. (There is an optional dinner for Friday evenings, the cost of which is not included in the total.)
