2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace January 25, 2015 Dear Parishioners, FROM OUR PASTOR Tradi onally on January 25 th the Church celebrates the conversion of the Apostle Paul (this year, it is outranked by the Third Sunday in Ordinary me). Notwithstanding, I d like to men on briefly something about the transforma on of this persecutor of Chris anity into a fervent apostle of Christ. He was a Jew, of the tribe of Benjamin. At his circumcision, he was named Saul. His father was by sect a Pharisee, living in Tarsus, the capital of Cilicia. St. Paul, being born at Tarsus, was by privilege a Roman ci zen, to which quality a great dis nc on and several exemp ons were granted by the laws of the empire. On the basis of the profound Orthodoxy that he learned at the school of Rabbi Hillel in Jerusalem, he saw the new movement that referred to Jesus of Nazareth as a risk, a threat to the Jewish iden ty. This explains the fact that he proudly persecuted the Church of God as he was to admit three mes in his Le ers (1 Cor 15: 9; Gal 1: 13; Phil 3: 6). He, in fact, was one of those who abe ed in the murder St. Stephen by keeping the garments of all who stoned that holy martyr; thereby according to St. Augus ne becoming guilty as if he himself threw all those stones. Augus ne also ascribes the conversion of St. Paul to St. Stephen: If Stephen, he said, had not prayed, the church would never have had St. Paul. Moreover, in the fury of his zeal, St. Paul applied to the high priest and Sanhedrim for a commission to take up all Jews at Damascus who confessed Jesus Christ, and bring them bound to Jerusalem, that they might serve as public examples for the terror of others. But God was pleased to show forth in him his pa ence and mercy; and, moved by the prayers of St. Stephen and his other persecuted servants, changed him, in the very heat of his fury, into a vessel of elec on, and made him a greater man in his church by the grace of the apostleship. He was almost at the end of his journey to Damascus, when about noon he and his company were suddenly surrounded by a great light from heaven, brighter than the sun. They all saw the light, and being struck with amazement, fell to the ground. Then Saul heard a voice, which to him was ar culate and dis nct: Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? Christ said not: Why do you persecute my disciples? but Me: for it is He, their head, who is chiefly persecuted in his servants. Saul answered: Who are you, Lord? Christ said: Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecute. It is hard for you to kick against the goad: to contend with one so much migh er than yourself. By persecu ng my church you make it flourish, and only prick and hurt yourself. This earnest and kind protest of our Lord, accompanied with a powerful interior grace, cured his pride, appeased his rage, and wrought at once a total change in him. Thus, trembling and astonished, he cried out: Lord, what will you have me to do? What to repair the past? What to promote your glory? I make a joyful obla on of myself to execute your will in everything, and to suffer for your sake afflic ons, disgraces, persecu ons, torments, and every sort of death. The true convert expressed this, not in a bare form of words, nor with faint languid desires, nor with any excep on lurking in the secret recesses of his heart; but with an en re sacrifice of himself, and an heroic victory over the world with its frowns and charms, over the devils with their snares and threats, and over himself and all inclina ons of self-love; devo ng himself totally to God. A perfect model of a true conversion, the greatest work of almighty grace! Christ ordered him to arise and proceed on his journey to the city, where he should be informed of what he expected from him. Christ would not instruct him immediately by himself, but, St. Augus ne observes, sent him to the ministry which he had established in the Church. St. Paul never recalled his wonderful conversion without raptures of gra tude and praise to the divine mercy. The Church, in thanksgiving to God for such a miracle of his grace, and to propose to us a perfect model of a true conversion, has ins tuted this feast, which we find men oned in several calendars and missals of the eighth and ninth centuries, and which Pope Innocent III commanded to be observed with great solemnity. Today also, Jesus voice passes through our mind and goes to the heart, for Jesus seeks our conversion. (Pope Francis, 04/19/13) Let s listen to Him. May God Bless you! Fr. John 1:14 The Family as First School of Human Virtues #11: Motives for Being Obedient (Part I) Let us now discuss the virtue of obedience, in which children need to be trained since their early years. Motives for Being Obedient We can distinguish deep motives which parents ought to recognize so that that they can go on to explain them to their children, and partial motives which small children and young people need for acquiring the habit of obeying as they make their way to a full appreciation of what obedience is. As a Christian virtue, obeying lawful authority is like obeying God. And there is no higher motive than that for doing what one is told. This motive provides the certainty that, by obeying, we ensure we do not make mistakes. The person who gives the order can make a mistake; but the person who obeys cannot, provided he does not do something which goes against justice.
