2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace March 8, 2015 FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, We proclaim Christ crucified, says St. Paul in today s Second Reading. To give us an idea of what Jesus Christ suffered in his life, and still more in his death, we must consider what the same Apostle says in his letter to the Romans: God sending His own Son, in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh. (Rom 8:3) Jesus Christ being sent by the Father to redeem us, clothed Himself with that which was infected with sin. And though He was exactly like us except sin, He took upon Himself our miseries and offered Himself to the Father for the remission of our sins. Hence, our Savior was laden with all the blasphemies, all the sacrileges, trespasses, thefts, cruelties, and abominable deeds which men have committed and will commit until the end of time. Behold Him, in a word, says St. Alphonsus of Liguori, the object of all the divine curses which men have deserved through their sins: Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us. St. Thomas Aquinas, this great Doctor of the Church, writes that both the internal and outward pains of Jesus Christ exceeded all the pains which can be endured in this life. And it was for this purpose that our Lord received from the Father as He himself said, a body you prepared for me. (Ps 40:7-9) St. Thomas remarks that our Lord suffered pains and torments in all his senses: He suffered in his sense of touch, because all his flesh was torn; He suffered in his taste, with gall and vinegar; He suffered in his hearing, through the blasphemies and mockeries that were offered to Him; He suffered in his sight, at beholding His Mother, who was present at his death. He suffered also in all his members: his Head was tortured with thorns, His hands and feet with nails, His face with buffeting and spitting, and all His Body with scourging, in the way that was foretold by Isaiah: He had no majestic bearing to catch our eye, no beauty to draw us to him. He was spurned and avoided by men, a man of suffering, knowing pain, like one from whom you turn your face, spurned, and we held him in no esteem. (Is 53:2-3) St. Isidore says that other men, when their pains are great and last long, through the very severity of the pain, lose all power of feeling it. But in Jesus Christ it was not so; his last sufferings were as bitter as his first, and the first stripes in his scourging were as torturing as the last; for the Passion of our Redeemer was not the work of man, but of the justice of God, who thought fit to chastise his Son with all the severity which the sins of all mankind deserved. Our Divine Savior truly suffered for us, more than all the penitents, all the anchorites, all that the martyrs have suffered, because God laid upon Him the weight of a rigorous satisfaction to the divine justice for all the sins of men: The Lord laid on Him the iniquity of us all. (Is 53:6) St. Thomas also says that Jesus Christ, in redeeming us, not only accomplished the virtue and infinite merit which belonged to his sufferings, but chose to suffer a depth of pain which might be sufficient to satisfy abundantly and rigorously for all the sins of the human race. And St. Bonaventure writes: He chose to suffer as much pain as if He Himself had committed all our sins. Only by contemplating the suffering humanity of Jesus can we become meek, humble, and tender as He is. There is no other way. We must make an effort during this third week of Lent to find Jesus; to dwell on his passion, on how much He suffered; to think of his meek silence. (Cf. Pope Francis, 09/12/13) I d like to leave you with a quote from the diary of St. Paul of the Cross: The holy sufferings of Jesus is a sea of sorrows, but it is also a sea of love. Ask the Lord to teach you to fish in this sea. Immerse yourself in it, and, no matter how deeply you go, you will never reach the bottom. Allow yourself to be penetrated with love and sorrow. In this way you will make the sufferings of the gentle Jesus your own. Fish for the pearls of the virtues of Jesus. This holy fishing is done without words. (04/08/ 1758) May God bless you all! Fr. 4 Page 4 Our Lady of Peace March 8, 2015 Children and Youth Religious Education Program News The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. John 1:14 The Family as First School of Human Virtues # 17 Let us now continue discussing the virtue of obedience, in which children need to be trained since their early years. Let us now discuss about how parents should approach some of the more common faults in the way their children obey which we listed in our last Sunday s page. What parents should do Obedience is made easier if parents are consistent in the way they elicit it. If they act now one way, now another, depending on their mood, so that one day they demand one thing and the next day something different, it is quite likely that their children will not develop the virtue of obedience. The important thing is to make a real effort oneself to live those values which one regards as important and to make sure that the children recognize these values very clearly. This means, in practice, that you have to elicit obedience in fewer things than one might expect. If we want our children to obey so that they grow in quality and avoid what is evil, we should not waste time in looking for superfluous obedience of obedience in areas where really the child runs no great risk: that is, we should not look for obedience in regard to things which annoy us, because we don t like the way children do them but which are really a matter of opinion. To be continued... (from Character Building, by David Isaacs, p.182) IMPORTANT DATES March 8: First Scrutiny at the noon Mass March 14: Second Scrutiny at the 5:00 pm Mass Faith leads us to employ our God-given talents in God s service. Our Lady s Juggler, Chapter 7 By Anatole France Being a witness of this emulation in praise and the glorious harvest of their (the monks ) labors, Barnaby mourned his own ignorance and simplicity. Alas!" he sighed, as he took his solitary walk in the little shelterless garden of the monastery, "wretched wight that I am, to be unable, like my brothers, worthily to praise the Holy Mother of God, to whom I have vowed my whole heart's affection. Alas! Alas! I am but a rough man and uskilled in the arts, and I can render you in service, blessed Lady, neither edifying sermons, nor treatises set out in order according to the rule, nor ingenious paintings, nor statues truthfully scupltured, nor verses whose march is measured to the beat of feet. No gift have I, alas!"... To be continued (from The Book of Virtues for Young People, by William Bennet, p. 355) Catechism Office hours: Tuesday and Thursday: 9:00 am to 11:30 am and 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm Wednesday: 9:00 am to 11:30 am and 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm Saturday: 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Office phone number: (408) olopccdoffice@servidoras.org Website: If you are willing to follow God s call to be a Catechist or an assistant, this is what you do: 1) Contact Sr. Angeles via at olopccd@servidoras.org for an interview during office hours. 2) Then Sr. Angeles will assist you with the Safe Environment procedure required by the Diocese of San Jose.
