2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace April 29, 2018 Dear Friends, This coming Tuesday, May 1, the Church celebrates the memorial of St. Joseph the Worker. This is a feast established by Pope Pius XII in 1955 in order to Christianize the concept of labor and give to all workmen a model and a protector. By the daily labor in his shop, offered to God with patience and joy, St. Joseph provided for the necessities of his holy spouse and of the Incarnate Word, and in doing so he became an example to all workers. Thus, while keeping all our working parishioners and all those who search for employment in our prayers, I simply wanted to place you in contact with some texts that speak of why St. Joseph is a model and inspiration for all workers. Pope Francis I: Jesus was born and lived in a family, in the Holy Family, learning from St. Joseph the carpenter s trade, in the workshop of Nazareth, sharing with him his commitment, hard work and satisfaction, as well as each day s difficulties. This calls to mind for us the dignity and importance of work... Work is part of the plan of God s love! (General Audience, 1 May 2013) Saint John Paul II: Work was the daily expression of love in the life of the Family of Nazareth. The Gospel specifies the kind of work Joseph did in order to support his family: he was a carpenter. This simple word sums up Joseph s entire life... The importance of work in human life demands that its meaning be known and assimilated in order to "help all people to come closer to God, the Creator and Redeemer, to participate in his salvific plan for man and the world, and to deepen... friendship with Christ in their lives,... What is crucially important here is the sanctification of daily life, a sanctification which each person must acquire according to his or her own state, and one which can be promoted according to a model accessible to all people: "St. Joseph is the model of those humble ones that Christianity raises up to great destinies;...he is the proof that in order to be a good and genuine follower of Christ, there is no need of great things -it is enough to have the common, simple and human virtues, but they need to be true and authentic. (Redemptoris Custos, nn ) St. Josemaria Escrivá: St Joseph was an ordinary sort of man on whom God relied to do great things. He did exactly what the Lord wanted him to do, in each and every event that went to make up his life. That is why Scripture praises Joseph as "a just man." And in Hebrew a just man means a good and faithful servant of God, someone who fulfils the divine will, or who is honorable and charitable toward his neighbor. So a just man is someone who loves God and proves his love by keeping God's commandments and directing his whole life toward the service of his brothers, his fellow men. (Christ is Passing Us By, n. 40) The question then comes to each one of us, how do we keep God at the center of our work and earthly endeavors? The advice Ven. Fulton Sheen would be dwell in the presence of God. We do this practically by turning to God at the beginning and completion of our tasks and offering it up for love of him, even frequently taking moments of pause or reflection throughout the course of our work, asking ourselves why we are doing it, and whether its purpose is holy. Thus, we can see that Joseph reveals to us the secret of a humanity which dwells in the presence of mystery and is open to that mystery at every moment of everyday life. Please join us on Saturday, May 13, 2018, as we commemorate the first appearance of Our Lady to the three shepherds, There will be Mass at 8 pm, followed by the outdoor rosary procession, with solemn benediction and blessing of the sick inside the church. St Juan Diego Women s Center is hosting a FREE training for sidewalk counselors right here at Our Lady of Peace. The training will be on May 19, 2018 from 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm at Our Lady of Peace, in the Family Learning Center. We have concurrent sessions in English and Spanish. The course is always free to all participants, but the cost of putting on the course is $50 per student. Volunteers Needed! Village House needs your help! The Village House Interfaith Sheltering program is in full swing this year! Started by Holy Spirit in 2016, with the full endorsement of Bishop McGrath, each participating church hosts 15 medically-fragile and unhoused women in our church. In 2017, a total of 49 women completed stays with the Village House Interfaith Program-- and 73% of those women moved on to a safe and stable place to live, and 54% of the women moved into permanent housing. Last year, St. Martin of Tours participated in the Village House, and our community (with many volunteers, including from Our Lady of Peace!) provided meals, shelter, and support for these special guests. Our experience with the women and our volunteers was such a blessing, we couldn't wait to do it again! We will host the women from May 2 - June 6. We have many volunteer opportunities for individuals, families, and groups. Please join us in this important ministry. We need you, and more importantly, our guests need you!
