2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace August 26, 2018 Dear Friends, As we have been considering some forgotten virtues, it is now time for us to look at a virtue that is perhaps virtually unknown, the virtue of studiousness or studiosity. It is a virtue that is intimately related to the knowledge of the truth and our commitment to the search for truth. It is not easy to find a good translation for the Latin word studiositas. In everyday language studiousness is going to mean the particular dedication of a good student. St. Thomas Aquinas uses this term in a very precise sense, as a virtue. The word studium, means, a keen or vehement application of the mind to something. (S.Th., II- II, q. 166, a.1) So, it has to do with knowledge and we can talk about knowledge in two ways: the act of obtaining knowledge or knowing something and the act of the appetite to know. Within all of us we have desires or appetites, for example, in our bodily nature we naturally desire the pleasure of food, so too with respect to our soul, we naturally desire to know. All men have a natural desire for knowledge. (Aristotle, Metaphysics, I,1) The moderation of this desire to know (or any desire for that matter) comes from temperance. Therefore, according to St. Thomas, the moderation of our desire to know belongs to studiousness. Now, I know what you may be thinking here, moderation means I better study less in order to be virtuous kids don t use this one on your parents to avoid doing your homework. Moderation here means, explains St. Thomas, to avoid tending excessively to know things. When there is a lack of moderation in this area it is called curiosity. In this golden age of information, which offers limitless access and connection to content, it also has the negative effect of cultivating the vice opposed to studiousness, curiosity. We can become hooked on instant gratification and bored without immediate stimulation, which applies entirely to the possession of information, we want to know things immediately and with little effort. The internet demands our attention with provocative words like bombshell, unprecedented, sensational, just to name a few. We seek information in quick and easy packages served in bite-size morsels, reading only the headlines, or blogs, or top 10 lists, any video that is longer than 3 minutes, forget about it. Curiosity is actually a very big issue in our day; it is a common vice that seems to be harmless, but all you have to do is look at how many times people pull out their phones or devices without any purpose other than to know what s happening. Now with, instant messaging, TV, smart phones, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Netflix, just to name a few, we are in a perpetual state of binging and purging of information as we scan the web, flip through channels and swipe the screens. So, how do we cultivate studiousness? It will take effort. The word studium implies another latin word vehemens, which means very eager, impetuous, ardent, application of the mind towards the truth. Knowledge tends to the truth, a true truth, that is to say, one that is not merely subjective, but real, opposed to error. To begin to acquire this one must have some conditions set. These come from the lucid reflections of A.G. Sertillanges, The Intellectual Life. He says we must establish a zone of silence. Here reflection and real thought transpires or as Saint-Exupéry says silence is the space where the spirit can spread its wings. A spirit of recollection is also a necessary condition says Sertillanges, which helps us to really think things through and penetrate the depths of reality rather than remaining immersed in superficialities. Another condition is humility, which helps us to understand that we will always be students to the truth. I would like to conclude with a few ingredients for studiousness: concentration. We cannot be satisfied with a 5-second attention span, we can build up our mental endurance, it just takes time and practice. Continued on page 3 Announcements We joyfully welcome all visitors to the Shrine Next week s 2nd collection: Facilities Maintenance Fund Donuts and Coffee Sale The Knights of Columbus invite you to their donuts and coffee sale after all morning Masses. 3 Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 The second ingredient is reading. Not just snippets and tidbits, tweets and snaps, but the classics. Here we are in contact with and formed by Homer, Plato, Augustine and Aquinas. We must know how to be selective in what we read. Why not read the best? The third ingredient is to exercise the memory. As St. Thomas Aquinas once wrote to a companion: Put whatever you can into the cupboard of your mind as if you were trying to fill a cup. Happy Studying! Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian Bishop McGrath s Statement on Pennsylvania Grand Jury Findings Statement of Bishop Patrick J. McGrath Diocese of San Jose August 15, 2018 The news this week of the historic sexual abuse of minors in six Pennsylvania dioceses is truly horrific. Trust was first betrayed by these attacks on the innocent; however, the systematic cover-up and reassigning of these priests by their bishops and superiors is just as unforgivable. As I have stated on many occasions, we the Church and its ministers must abide by a higher standard. We are called to protect and keep safe children, the young and all vulnerable persons. There can be no short-cuts, nothing that can excuse immoral and sinful acts. The Diocese of San Jose remains committed to protecting God s children and to fostering the safest of environments in which to worship, learn and live. I echo the bishops in Pennsylvania who have asked for forgiveness. Yet we know that forgiveness does not absolve perpetrators of the consequences of these grave transgressions against the defenseless. Finally, I ask you to pray for the victims and their families. I would also request that you pray for the vast majority of priests present and past who have been faithful in their ministry. They, too, grieve for the terrible stain of this sin that has harmed so many. May God bless you all.
