2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace June 5th, 2016 Dear Parishioners, This past Friday June 3rd we celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus which is one of the most popular devotions within the Church. I d like to remind you also that in June 1899 Pope Leo XIII consecrated the Human Race to the Divine Heart of Jesus. With that consecration he wished to obtain extraordinary benefits first for Christianity, but also for the whole human race, and such event cannot be forgotten. (Annum sacrum, 71). Because just simply put: the Heart of Christ is the heart of the Church and the world needs to understand that Christianity is the religion of love. (Cf. St. John Paul II, Homily, 11 June 1999) This time, however, given the fact that we are in the midst of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Solemnity takes on a very special connotation. Saint John Paull II wrote in his Encyclical Dives in misericordia: The Church seems in a particular way to profess the mercy of God and to venerate it when she directs herself to the Heart of Christ. In fact, it is precisely this drawing close to Christ in the mystery of his Heart which enables us to dwell on this point a point in a sense central and also most accessible on the human level of the revelation of the merciful love of the Father, a revelation which constituted the central content of the messianic mission of the Son of Man. (13) The popes, particularly St. John Paul II have often urged all of us to persevere in the practice of this devotion, which as he himself has said it contains a message which in our day has an extraordinary timeliness, because an unending spring of life, giving hope to every person, has streamed precisely from the Heart of God s Son, who died on the Cross. From the Heart of Christ crucified is born the new humanity redeemed from sin. Moreover, the Holy Pope has untiringly emphasized that we need Christ s Heart to know God and to know ourselves; we need it to build the civilization of love. (Cf. 8 June 1994) From the Heart of Christ, continues JPII, man s heart learns to know the genuine and unique meaning of his life and of his destiny, to understand the value of an authentically Christian life, to keep himself from certain perversions of the human heart, and to unite the filial love of God with love of neighbor. (Message to the Society of Jesus, 5 October 1986). The saints of all times also have recommended us to adore and contemplate the Heart of Christ especially in the Eucharist in order to become men and women of interior life. Why is this? St. John Paul II explains it: First, our Savior s Heart invites us to return to the Father s love, which is the source of every authentic love: In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins. (1 Jn 4:10) Jesus ceaselessly receives from the Father, rich in mercy and compassion, the love which He lavishes upon human beings (cf. Eph 2:4; Jas 5:11). His Heart particularly reveals the generosity of God towards us, sinners. Thus, a true devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus implies living a life of grace, often recurring to the sacraments, especially the Sacrament of Confession where we receive the healing caress of God s Mercy. Second, the contemplation of the Heart of Jesus in the Eucharist will spur in us the seeking in that Heart the inexhaustible mystery of the priesthood of Christ and of the Church. It will enable us to taste, in communion with our brothers and sisters, the spiritual sweetness of charity at its very source. It will make us more aware of having to live our apostolic dimension implied in our Baptism by spreading love and participating in the mission of evangelization. Therefore, true devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus also implies sharing with others this love of Christ, especially through the works of mercy. I leave you with the wise words of our dear John Paul II, and I m especially thinking of all the families that attend our Parish; he s said: Always keep your eyes on the Sacred Heart of Jesus, King and Center of all hearts. From him you will learn the great lesson of love, goodness, of sacrifice, of piety, so necessary for every Christian family. From him you will obtain strength, serenity, authentic and profound happiness for your married life! You will draw down his blessing, if the image of his Heart besides being impressed on your mind is always exposed and honored on the wall of your home! May God bless you all! Fr. Fa ma Pilgrimage On the 13th of May to October, Our Lady of Peace Church commemorates the appearance of Our Lady to the three shepherds; Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco, in Fa ma, Portugal. There is a mass at 7:30 pm, followed by the outdoor procession and blessing of the sick, inside the church. Children are invited to act as the (9) angels, (1) head angel and (3) shepherds, (2 girls and 1 boy). Parents must sign wavers. 8 Page 8 Our Lady of Peace June 5th, 2016 Learn Iconography Workshop St. Basil the Great Byzantine Catholic Church is holding its next iconography class on the weekends of July 8 to 10 and July 15 to 17, Our teacher is Mr. Raymond Vincent. The cost for the workshop is $330, which is due by June 6th, The cost includes a $75 nonrefundable deposit. Using egg tempera, students will learn to write an icon, which they will take home with them at the completion of the workshop. (The icon for this workshop will be the acheiropoieta, the icon of our Lord made without hands. ) More advanced students may wish to work on a different icon.
