2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace July 30, 2017 Dear Friends, I would like for you to consider your dignity. I would like for you to remember that you are beautifully, wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14) Nowadays, we are experts in seeing what man can do : freedom to think, freedom to express, freedom to act, freedom to etc., etc., etc. Perhaps, however, we are not experts in what the human person is. Do you and I understand, well, the profound dignity of the human person? I would like to think about this for the next couple of weeks in some different ways. In St. Paul s letter to the Ephesians (2:10), he says that we are his design (his masterpiece, his workmanship); God has created us in Christ Jesus. Pope Francis, reformulating the Pauline expression says: Even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor are masterpieces of God's creation, made in his own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect. The Catechism, as it should, sets the record straight from the very outset: The desire for God is written in the human heart, because man is created by God and for God; and God never ceases to draw man to himself. Only in God will he find the truth and happiness he never stops searching for. (CCC Ch. 1, 1) This is the first truth proclaimed by the Catechism of the Church! And it is crucial for us to understand (well) the dignity of the human nature. Today, especially in prosperous regions, many people have no idea why they are living or for what they are living; and sadly, today s culture is forming its own image of what is the right meaning of life. The transcendental character of life, for the Christian, is falling into different forms of materialism, or what is called the drama of atheistic humanism. This in the end is not just anti-christian (secular), but it is above all anti-human. We have been created in the image and likeness of God. Moreover, this likeness is not just one simple characteristic of us humans, but it is something absolutely fundamental. It totally directs the meaning of all things for our lives, by the simple fact that we come from God, and the fact that, therefore, we return to God. St. Ignatius of Loyola (in his book of the spiritual exercises) announces in a way that is very concise (succinct) and beautiful: man is created to praise reverence and serve our God and thereby saving our souls. In collaboration with God, our parents play a part, but my soul (that is most characteristic of my person, it is most intimate and personal) was created immediately by God. Infused in the soul, directly by God a soul that is spiritual. The dignity of man rests above all on the fact that he is called to communion with God. This invitation to converse with God, says the Second Vatican Council, is addressed to man as soon as he comes into being. For if man exists it is because God has created him through love, and through love continues to hold him in existence. He cannot live fully according to truth unless he freely acknowledges that love and entrusts himself to his creator. (Gaudium et Spes, 19) There are many practical themes that depend upon our understanding of who we are and where we are going, e.g., respect for one another, social justice, hospitality, feminity/ masculinity, modesty, religion, piety, are just to name a few. So, hopefully some reflections on anthropology, which is the study of man as such (not the study of cave men!), will be helpful in approaching other areas of our lives with meaning, depth and wonder. Heat/Warm Weather Warning Hydrate drink plenty of water (water is acceptable within the one hour of fasting for communion). Rest get enough sleep and rest if you feel tired. Shade find shade to rest if you are outside. Modesty in Clothing Please be mindful of modesty in clothing when dressing for Holy Mass. One s attire should not distract from another s prayer. Appropriate apparel should not be tight-fitting or revealing (for both men and women).

If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. 3 main reasons why registering is important: 1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register. 2. Registering in the parish makes Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. Infant baptisms, religious education registration, being a godparent/sponsor for baptisms or confirmations, and especially getting married whether you are getting married at this parish, another parish, or having an international Catholic wedding. If you re not a registered parishioner this will greatly delay the process. 3. Letters of Recommendation Sometimes there are occasions where letters of recommendations are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment, scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you re not registered, we cannot provide this letter to you or your family. Anyone, regardless of where they live and even though the Diocese is divided into parish geographical areas, is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding preparation paperwork will not be processed within the 3 months. Registering is easy! Visit the Parish Office, call the Rectory Office ( ) or us (info@olop-shrine.org) to request a registration form. Looking for a New Year s Resolution?
