Our Lady of Peace Church & Shrine Mission Statement Our Lady of Peace is a church and shrine dedicated to the greater glory of God and the salvation of souls. It is a place of prayer & pilgrimage with: Perpetual adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary Frequent celebration of the Sacraments, particularly the Eucharist and Reconciliation Integrated formation of the person (spiritual, moral, intellectual and emotional)

2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace August 10, 2014 Dear Parishioners, FROM OUR PASTOR Announcements Blessed be he who has raised the great day of Sunday above all other days. The heavens and the earth, angels and of men give themselves over to joy. (Cf. the Syriac text in the Missal of the Church of Antioch of the Maronites) With these words St. John Paul II begins the fourth chapter of Dies Domini. In it he clearly states that Sunday should be a day of joy and solidarity as well as a day of relaxation and rest. I invite you to reflect on throughout this week, precisely about these two characteristics. A day of joy! Can joy be planned? Is this not a feeling that depends on the happy or sorrowful circumstances of life? Certainly, Christian joy must mark the whole of life, and not just one day of the week. But in virtue of its significance as the day of the Risen Lord, Sunday is the day of joy in a very special way. And the Holy Father explains that indeed, Sunday is the day most suitable for learning how to rejoice and to rediscover the true nature and deep roots of joy. But, we should be careful not to confuse this joy with shallow feelings of satisfaction and pleasure, which inebriate the senses and emotions for a brief moment, but then leave the heart unfulfilled and perhaps even embittered. In the Christian view, joy is much more enduring and consoling! In fact, genuine Christian joy cannot be reduced to a chance feeling: its foundations lie in the love God manifested to us through the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. This certainty gives us a profound reason to live and to hope. With their lives, the saints attested that we can experience deep joy even in conditions of physical and spiritual suffering, if we know we are surrounded by God s love. On the other hand, authentic joy cannot only be an individual experience, but needs to be shared and participated in. For each one of us as well as for our families, Sunday must become the day on which we feel a closer communion with our neighbor and try to meet the needs of those who, for one reason or another, are in a distressing situation. The Holy Pope also exhorted us to imitate the example of the disciples of Emmaus who, once they had recognized the risen Christ in the breaking of the bread (cf. Lk 24: 30-32), felt the need to return immediately to share with all their brethren the joy of meeting the Lord (cf. 45). Every Mass ends with the missionary mandate Go, so take this as an invitation to bring the message of Christ to your family, workplace, school, group of friends, etc. In this way Sunday will become a day of sharing. Inviting a lonely person to dinner, offering the necessary to a needy family, visiting someone who is ill or in prison, giving some time to those who are passing through a difficult moment, visiting your elders: these are a few of the many possible practical acts which can make Sunday a day of fraternal solidarity. Lived in this way, the Lord s Day, as well as being truly valued, is also an expression of the dies hominis, the day of man, because it develops our humanity. May our Blessed Mother help us to understand the importance of living the Lord s Day. Precisely now that in few days we are going to celebrate the feast of the Assumption of Mary into heaven in body and soul, we ask our Lady the grace to be able to imitate her readiness to share the joy of the divine favors. These are the same sentiments which must be felt by those who encounter Christ in the Eucharist. Mass is not enclosed within the walls of a church: it is the source of transformation for everyday life, it is a mission, it is a sending for proclamation and, at the same time, a sending for charitable acts. Samuel Weber as the main presenter, director of the Benedict XVI Institute for Sacred Music and Divine Worship at St. Patrick Seminary. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced rehearsals will be offered, workshop concludes with a sung mass by all participants.
