2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace November 3, st Reading: Sir 35:12-14,16-18 Psalm: Ps 34,2-3,17-19,23 2nd Reading: 2 Tm 4:6-8,16-18 Gospel: Lk 18:9-14 Dear Parishioners, FROM OUR PASTOR The month of November is dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory a reminder for us of our duty to pray for them, especially for our loved ones who have died. Just yesterday we commemorated All Souls Day and offered prayers for their souls; thus mysteriously contributing to their entry into beatitude. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that all souls who die in God s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. We give the name Purgatory (from the Latin word purgare, to make clean, to purify) to this final purification of the elect, which is totally and entirely different from the punishment of the damned. The Church formulated her dogma of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. This doctrine is also based in Sacred Scripture: Therefore Judas Maccabeus made atonement for the dead that they might be delivered from their sin (2 Macc 12:46). There are several passages in the New Testament that point to a process of purification after death. Thus, Jesus Christ declares and whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but he that shall speak against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in the world to come. According to St. Isidore of Seville (Deord. creatur., 14, 6) these words prove that in the next life some sins will be forgiven and purged away by a certain purifying fire. St. Augustine also argues that some sinners are not forgiven either in this world or in the next would not be truly said unless there were other sinners who, though not forgiven in this world, are forgiven in the world to come (City of God, 21.24). The necessity of Purgatory is grounded upon the absolute purity of God. In the Book of Revelations we read of the great beauty of His pure gold city with its walls of jasper and spotless light which is not of the sun or moon, but the light of the Lamb slain from the beginning of the world. There shall not enter into it anything defiled or that works abomination or that makes a lie, but they that are written in the Book of the life of the Lamb (Rev 21:27). Justice demands that nothing unclean, only the pure of heart, shall stand before the face of the pure God. Suppose there was no Purgatory. The justice of God would be too terrible for words! Who of us would dare assert at the moment of death we were pure enough to stand before the immaculate Lamb of God? Do you think you could say it? I know I cannot. Archbishop Fulton Sheen beautifully says Purgatory is the place where the love of God tempers the justice of God and the love of man tempers the injustice of man. In praying for the dead, the Church above all contemplates the mystery of the Resurrection of Christ, who obtains salvation and eternal life for us through his Cross. Our hope is founded on Christ s sacrifice. Hence, the prayers of intercession and petition which the Church never ceases to raise to God have great value. They are characteristic of a heart attuned to God s mercy (CCC, 2635). During the Eucharist, through the general intercessions and the Memento for the dead, we pray for all those who have died, so that through the trial of Purgatory they will be purified, if necessary, and attain eternal joy. In entrusting them to the Lord, we recognize our solidarity with them and share in their salvation in this wondrous mystery of the communion of saints. I therefore encourage you to pray fervently for the dead, for their family members and for all our brothers and sisters who have died, that they may obtain the remission of the punishments due to their sins and may hear the Lord s call: Come, O my dear soul, to eternal repose in the arms of my goodness, which has prepared eternal delights for you (St. Francis de Sales, Introduction to the Devout Life, 17, 4). Let us especially remember in our prayers the soul of Msgr. Sweeney and the souls of the Shrine s benefactors. As we live the liturgical year let us always reflect upon the truth of our faith and let us consider them with all seriousness, because our lives are based upon them in this world, and consequently in the world to come.
