2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace September 9, 2018 Dear Friends, The fifth forgotten virtue we will remember is liberality, which is not to be confused with a political stance. St. Thomas, taking from St. Augustine, says that it is virtuous to use well those things that we can use poorly (Nicomachean Ethics, bk IV, c. 1), which shows that we can do good or evil not only using that which comes from the interior, powers of the soul and passions, but also those things that are exterior to us, for example, material goods that are at our disposal. Liberality or generosity, therefore, is the right use of these goods. This virtue strikes at the heart avarice, which is what St. Thomas calls a vice of slavery. (cf., S. Theol. II-II, 118, 4) A vice that sacred scripture says is capable of causing man to sell his soul (cf., Eccl 10,10). No vice, says Cicero, is more offensive than this one. And finally, St. Paul says, the root of all evil is avarice. (1 Tim 6, 10) According to St. Thomas it is a capital vice because it is the principle of other sins, for example, lacking mercy with one s neighbor, always having to have one s own way of doing things, attachment to one s own judgment, fraud, injustice, etc. The specific focal point of liberality is interior affection one has towards riches. The principle of liberality is, therefore, a healthy detachment from riches through which one neither desires nor loves money, in such a way that he desires it not, nor loves it: so that when it is fitting he gives it not only to his friends but also to those whom he knows not. (Summa Theol. II-II, q.117, a.5, ad 3) Not only does this virtue invite us to make good use of the gifts that God has given us, but it also taps into the very nature of who we are. Let us explain. Man is made in the image and likeness of God, a God who is infinitely liberal in the sharing of His goodness. The Catechism expresses this beautifully in its very first lines: God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. (CCC Prologue, n. 1) Three of the great minds of the Church all acknowledged the liberality of God. St. Augustine says: You are the most lavish giver of all good. (Confessions, Bk 2, no. 13) And St. Thomas Aquinas writes: He alone is the most perfectly liberal giver, because He does not act for His own profit, but only for His own goodness. (Summa Theol. I, 44, 4, ad 1) Finally, St. Leo the Great adds that nothing is more worthy of imitation than God s liberality: to the pleasant and gentle souls liberality is commendable, for nothing is more noble of man that to imitate his Creator and Lord, becoming, to the extent of his possibilities, the executor of the divine work. Because when you satisfy those who hunger, when you dress those who are naked, when you heal the sick, is the hand of the minister that brings the help of God and the kindness of the servant not a gift from the Lord? He who has no need of help in order to bestow mercy, he has disposed in such a way, the exercise of His omnipotence that it be through the men that come to help others in moments of need. (Lenten Sermon, 5, 4) Liberality is a virtue that impels us to give generously to God and collaborate with His plan. It is easily seen in the use of material goods, but it can also be understood in terms of one s time, in one s talents, or even in the participation in bringing about life in the case of spouses. Our call to existence through creation and our call to discipleship through baptism call us to cultivate this virtue of liberality. It is a call to simply being who we are as persons and Christians. I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. (Jn 13,34) Christ loved us so much that he liberally gave Himself up for us. (cf., Gal 1,4; Eph 5,2) Liberality can be summed up in four words: Thy will be done. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian Announcements We joyfully welcome all visitors to the Shrine This week s 2nd collection: Catholic Education Next week s 2nd collection: Little Sisters of the Poor Donuts and Coffee Sale The Knights of Columbus invite you to their donuts and coffee sale after all morning Masses. 3 Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 Our Path to Reconciliation and Healing Diocese of San Jose Recent news of abuse and misconduct in Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., and other places in the world has shaken our local community and eroded trust in the Church and its leadership. These events are horrific. We must review and, if necessary, renew our efforts to heal all victims and others affected by these crimes and sins, bring perpetrators to justice and preclude further abuse. The Diocese of San Jose remains committed to the protection of children and vulnerable adults. The Diocese of San Jose has long undertaken significant initiatives to protect all with whom we have contact. Here follows a brief timeline of the development of our policies for the protection of children and vulnerable adults, a summary of our systemic efforts to ensure a safe environment, and an outline of our response to accusations of abuse and misconduct that highlights these efforts. In 2002, the Bishops of the United States approved the Dallas Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The Charter provides policies for dioceses of the United States to address incidents of abuse and facilitate a safe environment in our parishes, schools, and Catholic organizations, the places where we worship, gather, educate and serve. It includes procedures for reconciliation, healing, and accountability. The Dallas Charter was updated and strengthened in 2005, 2011, and The Diocese of San Jose has adopted and implemented the Dallas Charter. We have also successfully undergone annual audits to ensure compliance and ongoing growth and development in our efforts of protection. In 2002, the Diocese of San Jose established the Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults. This office oversees and coordinates the pastoral care and outreach to victims of clergy sexual abuse (as well as other victims who may have been abused within parishes or Catholic institutions here or in other dioceses). This outreach and care include counseling, support groups, spiritual assistance, and other support services. Throughout the years, we have had the service of Victim Assistance Coordinators, who organize these efforts and accompany victims through their healing. The independent Diocesan Review Board was established in This board evaluates any allegation of sexual abuse of children and vulnerable adults by clergy (deacons, priests, and bishops), Church personnel or volunteers within the Diocese, even if civil authorities have chosen not to pursue legal action. The board also evaluates accusations of clergy sexual misconduct that point to possible violations of pastoral relationships. Following its evaluation, the board advises the Bishop of San Jose regarding recommended action. The Diocesan Review Board is presently chaired by the Honorable Edward Panelli, a retired Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court, and includes other qualified lay persons and one pastor, as mandated by the Dallas Charter. The Diocese of San Jose has ongoing programs to ensure screening and training of all clergy, diocesan employees, seminarians, and Church volunteers in Santa Clara County. All clergy, seminarians, employees, and volunteers must be fingerprinted and undergo a background check before they can minister in the Diocese. Approximately 46,000 persons have been fingerprinted and undergone background screening since Additionally, all clergy, employees and volunteers are required to undergo comprehensive Safe Environment Training every three years. The Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults coordinates and monitors this training. Over 46,000 persons have undergone safe environment training in the Diocese since We provide ageappropriate safe environment training in our schools and catechetical programs. Additionally, the Diocese requires that employees complete training regarding sexual harassment and workplace conduct every three years. While important, training and background checks cannot prevent all misconduct. All clergy, school personnel, and pastoral ministers are mandated reporters in the State of California and must report any suspected abuse immediately. When we receive an accusation of sexual abuse, we notify civil authorities immediately. The Office for the Protection of Children and Vulnerable Adults then notifies the Bishop, the Vicar General, and the Chair of the Diocesan Review Board. Continued on page 6

5 Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Hosted by: Our Lady of Peace Church & Shrine Page 5 Sponsored by: The Saint Pio Foundation Veneration officially opens in the Family Learning Center at 9am and will continue throughout the day until 7pm. The day will conclude in the church with Mass at 7:30pm in honor of St. Pio, which will be celebrated by Rev. Brian Dinkel, IVE. The Saint Pio Foundation will sell books and items related to Padre Pio at the event. The relics on tour include: Saint Pio s glove, crusts from the wounds, cotton-gauze with Saint Pio s blood stains, a lock of his hair, his mantle, and his handkerchief soaked with his sweat hours before he died. All are invited to come venerate the relics, spend time in Eucharistic Adoration and attend Holy Mass at 6:30am, 8am, 12pm, and 5:15pm. Confession times will be listed online on our event page. For more information, please visit our event page at or call Our Lady of Peace parish office at (408)

6 Page 6 Our Lady of Peace September 9, 2018 The Diocese of San Jose cooperates fully with any investigation. The victim s safety and care are the primary concerns, and a Victim Assistance Coordinator is assigned to facilitate an immediate response to the victim and family and to coordinate ongoing care. If the accusation is deemed credible, we remove the accused from ministry, pending the results of further investigation. Following the civil investigation and any legal action, the Diocese will pursue additional sanctions within the Church. As a Diocese, we have adopted and exceeded national norms. Our churches and schools are much safer since the Dallas Charter was promulgated by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in Through the Charter, Catholic dioceses across the United States, including San Jose, have committed to conducting background checks for all persons who work with minors and vulnerable adults and to training minors and adults to recognize signs of abuse and of grooming by sexual predators. Although we are not perfect, our efforts help ensure that our churches and schools in Santa Clara County are much safer. The Diocese of San Jose remains committed to the protection of all persons to whom we minister, to the facilitation of safe and healthy parishes, schools, and organizations, and to healthy pastoral relationships that foster each person s relationship with our loving God. To that end, we will continue to review our policies and procedures to learn if there are ways that we may improve our efforts on behalf of children, youth and all vulnerable persons. Pope Francis has asserted that We have realized that these wounds never disappear and that they require us forcefully to condemn these atrocities. He continues, The heart-wrenching pain of these victims, which cries out to heaven, was long ignored, kept quiet, or silenced. He calls us to prayer and penance: Penance and prayer will help us to open our eyes and our hearts to other people s sufferings. We continue to do all that we can, through prayer and action, to promote reconciliation and healing for those who have suffered and to create a safe environment for every person. August 31, 2018 Mass Request Guidelines It has been the tradition in the Church that priests are asked to offer a Holy Mass for a specific intention. Here at Our Lady of Peace we are truly blessed to have the Holy Mass celebrated at least 30 times a week, with Masses holding the intentions of the faithful. Starting last year, we have COLLECTIVE MASS INTENTIONS for the 8am Holy Mass from Monday to Saturday. Collective Masses may have more than one person requesting/donating for that particular Mass. Please note, in no way does this diminish the effectiveness of the Mass intention. This quarter the book will open on Tuesday, September 11th for the months of: October, November, December To submit a Mass request, the requestor: Must be at least 13 years of age Must be present at the office to submit the form (during the hours listed below) Must have the donation payment (exact cash or check) May only submit up to a maximum of two Mass requests per day Mass request requirements: Donation of $10 per Mass Up to two (2) separate Masses that do not occur in the same week may be requested at a time Each Mass may only have 2 intentions with a limit of 25 characters (including spaces) per Mass request. No changes can be made once the requests have been placed into the calendar No holds or reservations will be accepted. Mass requests are accepted from 9am - 12pm and 1pm 4pm on Monday through Friday only. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the rectory office at (408)
