It is a place of prayer & pilgrimage with: Perpetual adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary Frequent celebration of the Sacraments, particularly the Eucharist and Reconciliation Integrated formation of the person (spiritual, moral, intellectual and emotional)
2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace February 19, 2017 Dear Parishioners, Over the past several weeks, we have been trying to ensure the realization that through Jesus Christ we are granted a newness of life. And it is with a firm conviction that we can know that the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it, (Jn 1,5) and will not overcome it, not even today. As St. Paul describes it, this action or intervention of God was a rescue mission. He rescued us from an evil age: The Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins that he might rescue us from the present evil age in accord with the will of our God and Father. (Gal 1,4) There is a temptation, however, to antiquate the saving activity of God as a back then and for those people of that age type of thing not really pertaining to me in any concrete or meaningful way. The faith is something quite different. God snatched them from sin and death, evil and darkness, and He does no less for us. One of the ways that the Lord has snatched us from the present evil age is through a proclamation of the word of truth to us. He has also done so by granting us the sacraments, where (to this day) He bathes us in His blood and pours grace into our hearts through the waters of baptism. We can confess our sins. He nourishes us with His body and blood. He calls some to be holy priests to preach and teach. He calls others to be united in holy matrimony so that you can bear fruit through children and continue to hand on the gift life and truth in the domestic church of you home. He anoints us when we are sick. This is how the Lord rescues us and snatches us from an evil generation, it is neither something automatic nor is it magic fairy dust! It is a dependence on and loving relationship that rests upon the four pillars of the Christian life daily discipline of prayer, learning about scripture, frequenting the sacraments and holy fellowship (cf., Acts 2,42). I may ask you: do you feel rescued, are you feeling snatched from an evil age? As His disciples, we should say, Yes! and I can tell you how and I can tell you why. We should be able to say: I can tell you, from my own experience, that when I began to pray the rosary daily, when I spent time with holy scripture, added the daily reception of the Eucharist, making a daily holy hour, frequenting confession and surrounding myself with friends who had values and integrity I began to see and experience and hear everything that the Lord professes. The question may be directed to you. How frequently do you receive the Lord in the Eucharist? How often do you obtain the gift of His healing in confession? Do you spend time with Him in prayer? Is your heart and mind open to listening and learning to the Lord s voice through His Gospel? Do you surround yourself with friends and fellowship that are trying to walk in this light as well or are you keeping company with another sort of crowd? Am I among the millions who spend significant time with stars and celebrities, watching them act, or watching their lives on reality TV, Netflix and movies? Am I led to subscribe to unreasonable world views that are formed simply by popular opinion? Is my intellect being robbed of its nobility and darkened by a self-centered and self-referential society? And is my will being zapped of its energy and courage because of the opportunities for anonymous and unfettered consumption? Last question, following St. Paul: Am I gazing with unveiled face on the glory of the Lord,... being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, as from the Lord who is the Spirit? (2 Cor 3,18) In good ways or bad ways, for better or for worse, we will be transformed by the company that we keep, the truth that we profess, and the good that we love. Christ offers to us life and life in abundance. He extends a hand to us out of the kingdom of darkness and into the kingdom of light. As darkness sets in and seems to overcome the land, a single light will pierce through all the more. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us! Fr. Brian Dinkel, IVE Announcements We joyfully welcome all visitors to the Shrine ADA Pledge Drive Our parish goal this year is $279,901. Fr. 4 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 Children and Youth Religious Education Program News The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. John 1:14 The Will to Discipline First and foremost, discipline more, and you ll have to discipline less. Put another way, we can say that the more ready and willing you are to discipline calmly and firmly the instant the situation calls for it, the less often you will need to discipline over time. You will be predictable. Your child will have few doubts about your expectations and even fewer doubts that in short order you will back them up with consequences. You will not allow twenty-eight minutes of arguing, negotiating, cajoling, and threatening to persist until, finally hitting your limit, you discipline. You will discipline at the beginning of trouble instead of at the end. Put simply, the will to discipline makes the act of discipline less necessary. Feast of the Chair of St. Peter Wednesday, February 22 Every year on February 22, the Church celebrates the feast of the Chair of St. Peter, to commemorate St. Peter's teaching in Rome. Already in the second half of the 18th century an ancient wooden chair inlaid with ivory was venerated and traditionally held to be the Episcopal chair on which St. Peter sat as he instructed the faithful of Rome. In fact, it is a throne in which fragments of acacia wood are visible, which could be part of the chair of St. Peter, encased in oak and reinforced with iron bands. Several rings facilitated its transportation during processions. Pope Alexander VII commissioned Bernini to build a sumptuous monument which would give prominence to this ancient wooden chair. Bernini built a throne in gilded bronze, richly ornamented with bas-reliefs in which the chair was enclosed: two pieces of furniture, one within the other. On January 17, 1666 it was solemnly set above the altar.
