2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace Church & Shrine January 20, 2019 F P D The Holy Mass is a Sacred Event and Relevant to Our Lives Dear Friends, The Holiness of God is expressed in transcendence, He is completely distinct from this world, the Creator. In this way, the Christian must also transcend the world because he has another City, the Christian belongs to the Heavenly Jerusalem, which is the definitive Homeland. St. James describes this mixture as having an adulteress heart, because they want to serve the world and God, and one cannot serve two masters. The world leads us to forget about God. For this reason, we need a Church that is relevant, in the truest sense of the word. Relevant, means literally, from the Latin (re levare) to raise or lift up again. In order for her to be relevant to you, do not expect anything less than to be raised. Do not bring her down to the world and ask her to look and sound and speak more like the world. Expect to listen to, see and hear, smell and experience the sacred other-worldliness of the faith. The message of Jesus is nothing of this world, because it s not of this world. It s from the world to come. It should have an otherworldly and transcendent quality to it. The message of Jesus is come and follow me. But who would follow it if there is nothing unique about it, if it looks and sounds exactly like the outside world? That is why the Church has always made the distinction between the sacred and the profane. I think souls are starving for something relevant (to lift them up), especially the youth. Young people have to navigate through a new array of emotions and desires and hopes spring forth within them; new joys, often new sadness and fears, appear. They become more self-conscious, more interior and more sensitive. It is a crucial time to direct these bubbling passions to authentic values. The noise and absorbing domain of sex, drugs, and the virtual world (movies, social media, mp3, etc.) provide a premature and superficial relevance, but they stunt your growth as a person. They prevent you from hearing the calmer, deeper attractions of the spiritual world or of true love. If young souls do not encounter something that elevates them or is relevant to who they are as human beings, not just youth or an American or generation xyz, but relevant to them as a human being, a person, you may forfeit the capacity to transcend. Our contact with the Church, with the Gospel, with Worship, should be an experience that is set apart from all other experiences in this world, something sacred. Expect that, look for that. Do not look to her to entertain you, but look to her to elevate you. Do not expect her act like pop culture (which is based upon what is popular), but expect her to rectify and guide culture (based upon what is true, good, and beautiful). Do not look to her for affirmation in your thoughts and feelings, but for formation in ordering and deepening your thoughts and feelings. The Church is not a place to express who you are, but to discover who you are, wonderfully made, so that you may express your uniqueness according to God s plan for you. To participate in the sacrifice of the Holy Mass, the Church s most relevant act, is something enormous, something incredible, something that truly captures our attention and orders our actions. One of the Churches recent and great converts, Bl. John Henry Newman, candidly describes his sentiments towards the Mass when he says, to me nothing is so consoling, so piercing, so thrilling, so overcoming, as the Mass, said as it is among us. I could attend Masses forever, and not be tired. It is not a mere form of words it is a great action, the greatest action that can be on earth. It is, not the invocation merely, but, if I dare use the word, the evocation of the Eternal. He becomes present on the altar in flesh and blood, before whom angels bow and devils tremble. (Loss and Gain, ch. 20) Sometimes we say, Oh, I have to go to mass or I don t get anything out of it. We are missing the point, greatly, if we see the celebration of the Holy Mass simply as an obligation or as merely passive event. We give our time, our sacrifices, our adoration, in exchange for something Eternal, Perfect, Love Itself, that is, God Himself. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian

Plenary Indulgence The Vatican has granted the request of Archbishop Cordileone and his brother bishops of this Ecclesiastical Province and has declared opportunities for obtaining a plenary indulgence for those participating in the sacred celebrations related to the Walk for Life West Coast and the other prolife events being held around the country this month! And there is also a Papal blessing for ALL who attend the Walk. The Vatican has granted a plenary indulgence and a papal blessing for those who participate in the Walk for Life West Coast, including those who are sick and infirm and praying along with the participants in the January 26 rally and walk along Market Street. The Papal Blessing will be imparted by Archbishop Cordileone at the Mass in St. Mary's Cathedral before the Rally and Walk. A Plenary Indulgence may be obtained by satisfying the usual conditions of confession, Eucharist, and prayer for the Pope's intentions, AND attendance at the Cathedral Mass or another offered for the protection of life on January 26 in the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the other dioceses of the Ecclesial Province (Honolulu, San Jose, Oakland, Stockton, Sacramento, Santa Rosa, Reno, Salt Lake City, and Las Vegas). Those unable to attend such a Mass may obtain the indulgence by joining to it spiritually or via media. The Mass will be livestreamed on the Archdiocese website, sfarch.org. The Apostolic Penitentiary...graciously grants to His Excellency, the Most Reverend Salvatore J. Cordileone...the faculty to impart the Papal Blessing with the accompanying Plenary Indulgence on the 26th day of January, 2019, the day of the annual event called Walk for Life West Coast, after the Divine Sacrifice has been offered at the Cathedral, to all Christ's faithful who are present, who are truly penitent and compelled by charity, and who participated in the same sacred rites," according to a December 21 letter signed by Mauro Cardinal Piacenza, Major Penitentiary, of the Apostolic Penitentiary, and received last week in San Francisco.
