2 Page 2 Our Lady of Peace April 5, 2015 Dear Parishioners, [April 5 FROM OUR PASTOR Jesus, who was crucified, is risen! This event is the basis of our faith and our hope. (Pope Francis) From all of us here at Our Lady of Peace Parish, Priests, Sisters and our en re staff, we wish you and your families, a blessed and hope-filled Easter. A er Lent s forty days of prepara on for Easter, our Holy Mother Church in her wisdom ensures that we celebrate the resurrec on longer than we do the season of penance. The Paschal Mystery, Christ s passion, death and resurrec on, is central to our faith. Jesus conquered sin and death and reopened the gates of heaven. Through His victory over death and our rebirth in bap sm we share in eternal life. While the Resurrec on is the nucleus and is celebrated in our Faith every day, we par cularly exult and rejoice during the Octave of Easter and Easter season, The fi y days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated as one feast day, some mes called the great Sunday (General Norms for the Liturgical Year and Calendar), which echoes St. Augus ne s homily: The fi y days of Easter exclude fasts, since it is in an cipa on of the banquet that awaits us on high. (Sermon 252) During these fi y days of rejoicing there are some elements in the liturgy that remind us of the extended feast. For instance, you might see that the priests wear white or gold vestments all through the season. Also throughout the Easter season the Paschal or Easter candle, which is an image of the Risen Christ, remains at the side of the altar and is lit at every Mass. But also, the Easter season unfolds different aspects of the Resurrec on of our Lord in the successive Sundays or weeks: Easter Sunday, Easter Octave, Divine Mercy Sunday, Solemnity of the Ascension, and prepara on for Pentecost. Par cularly today, I d like to emphasize the Easter Octave, which extends throughout the first eight days of the Easter season. During this me the Church considers every day another Easter, with the focus on the newly bap zed, celebra ng the liturgy of Easter Sunday un l the Second Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday). There are some differences in the Mass found only during the Octave which we should be aware of so as to take more advantage of the richness and sacredness of this me: -Before the Gospel is proclaimed, the ancient Sequence Vic mae Paschali is read or sung. -The Alleluia verse throughout the week is This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad, Alleluia. -Before the Holy, Holy, there is also a special preface of Easter. -When Eucharis c Prayer I is used, there is a proper form for the In communion with those... : Celebra ng the most sacred night (day) of the Resurrec on of our Lord Jesus Christ in the flesh, and in communion with those whose memory we venerate, especially the glorious ever-virgin Mary, Mother of our God and Lord, Jesus Christ -A proper Therefore, Lord we pray (Hanc Igitur) is also used in the Eucharis c Prayer I: Therefore, Lord, we pray: graciously accept this obla on of our service, that of your whole family, which we make to you also for those to whom you have been pleased to give the new birth of water and the Holy Spirit, gran ng them forgiveness of all their sins; order our days in your peace, and command that we be delivered from eternal damna on and counted among the flock of those you have chosen.
