2 JANUARY 24, 2016 From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, TODAY S READINGS PRESENT US WITH JESUS AS THE TRUE MESSIAH, predicted by the prophet Isaiah. St. Paul could not have used a more eloquent example of the vine-branches parable employed by Jesus, than the very popular example of the body parts that was so prominent in the ancient peoples literature. We Catholics are united to Jesus and to one another, as all the members of the body are inextricably related to one another. If I have a migraine headache, or an upset stomach, or a toothache, the entire me suffers. Today, the entire Catholic Church suffers because of many causes. The displaced refugees in the Middle East, persecuted Catholics in China and Sudan by ISIS, the divorced and remarried Catholics who are not receiving Holy Communion, the Catholics who do not go to Church because of sinful habits, Catholics who have lost faith in the Church because of the abuse scandals, as well as the poor, hungry, homeless and jobless Catholics around the world, the drug-addicted or the depressed Catholics, who despair of their eternal salvation because of lack of hope in the merciful and forgiving God, so forth and so on.. Probably many of us are touched by these suffering Catholics in one way or the other. Some of us do not feel any pain or consequences at all from the plight of other Catholics. But this is an illusion, because to use the example of Jesus (light of the World), when let s say that 10 people are walking in a dark cave, and only the leader has a lighted candle, there will be very little light to walk safely, and probably only the candle bearer can barely see the dangerous path ahead, beside the headache to care for the other nine who are walking in darkness. But if all 10 people carry a candle, then there is more light for all and less burden for the leader! Same here, my friends, these sisters and brothers of ours are following us walking in dim light, and falling on stones, and with danger of slipping down into a dark bottomless pit what are you doing about it? The needs are truly overwhelming us, but it is so simple to help; just take care of the Catholics we can reach, and here are some suggestions: 1. Get involved in the ministries of the parish. Take advantage of this week s Ministry Fair and visit the booths in the courtyard to find your favorite ministry. 2. Get involved in Caritas, Bethesda House for people with AIDS, and don t forget our Day Care babies, and other volunteer groups. 3. Bring a friend to Mass! If someone has not been to church for years, ask them to join you. 4. Get involved in prayer groups: Legion of Mary, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament if you can t do anything else, please pray! JANUARY IS THE MONTH WHEN WE REMEMBER IN A particular way the slaughter of the innocents done by abortionists. Remember, the Creator of Life who said: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse, CHOOSE LIFE, then, that you and your descendants may live. By the way, Jesus FORGIVES also the sins of ABORTION, so if you know that someone has left the Church or the Sacraments because of this sin, convince them to go to confession. It is so easy to go and feel accepted and PSALTER WEEK III embraced by God, and make up with that little angel who is in Heaven protecting them and their children. Pope Francis has felt this burden too great, and during the Jubilee Year of Mercy, this sin can be forgiven by any priest in confession. And, on January 15, the 18th Annual Prayer Walk for Life to end abortion took place here at St. Martha s on the 43rd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Thanks to all those who walked, despite the heavy rain, and to those who prayed in support of the right to life the sanctity of life. TODAY WE WILL HAVE OUR ANNUAL COLLECTION FOR THE CHURCH IN LATIN AMERICA. Your gifts to the collection will fund catechesis, pastoral programs, marriage and family life projects, seminarian education and many other necessary programs in Latin America and the Caribbean. By funding these programs, the support you give today will provide seeds to grow the faith for years to come. It is more important than ever that we support the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. Please give generously in today s collection. Once again our Bishop Dewane has asked all the parishes in our Diocese to take flu precautions during the Mass. Some guidelines are: Greet each other before Mass with a bow, and share the Sign of Peace without touching hands, obviously HUGS are allowed, the Precious Blood is not to be shared with the faithful, and all Ministers of Holy Communion are encouraged to wash their hands before Mass begins and after Mass. These are common sense and good health habits we all should follow to avoid spreading germs. I always use the fist bump to greet during these times! Let s be sensible! CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK BEGINS NEXT WEEK, JANUARY 31, with a school Mass at 10 a.m., followed by a school Open House. Please pray for our school, the teachers and the children during Catholic Schools Week and always. AND IN OUR ST. MARTHA CATHOLIC SCHOOL, our Art Teacher, Mary Jo Salomone, received word that our art students have won the Veterans Day Auxiliary VFW Post 3233 Patriotic Art Contest.: Why I Love America by Alexa Rouen, 3rd place; Nyah Andrews, 2nd place and Pedro Cava, 1st place. The Pledge of Allegiance by Hailey Fritschle, 2nd place and Scarlett O Malley, 1st place. St. Martha art students won five out of six awards. The winners received a certificate and a cash prize. Congratulations to our budding Picassos and their dedicated art teacher, Mary Jo Salomone. SOME OF OUR PARISHIONERS have asked if we can sing the Our Father at Sunday Masses. Since you pray twice when you sing, I have agreed. Beginning Ash Wednesday, the Our Father will be sung at Sunday Masses! Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha s priests: Frs. Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry; Deacons Bill, Patrick, & Kevin; Brs. Bill, Tom, Paul & Lawrence and Srs. Cathy & Marianne

We say please so as not to be forceful in family life: May I please do this? Would you be happy if I did this? We do this with a language that seeks agreement. We say thank you, thank you for love! But be honest with me, how many times do you say thank you to your wife, and you to your husband? How many days go by without uttering this word, thanks! And the last word: sorry. We all make mistakes, and on occasion someone gets offended in the marriage, in the family, and sometimes I say plates are smashed, harsh words are spoken, but please listen to my advice: don t ever let the sun set without reconciling. Peace is made each day in the family: Please forgive me, and then you start over. ALL MUST WORK TOGETHER In St. Paul s remarkable Letter to the Corinthians, we again find the comparison of the Church to a body. Paul lays out for us the complete concept of what it means to be a steward of the Church and of everything we have and are. As Paul explains it, the Body of Christ, the Body of the Church, is not a goal; it is a fact, a fact that we must completely grasp, appreciate and practice. Through Baptism, we are called to be part of the Body, and that calling includes our willingness and preparation to play our role, our vocation, in relation to the entire Body. St Paul points out that there is great diversity in the Body of Christ, the Church. However, each part of the Body, each one of us as a member, has a function within our common goal. Each of us has different gifts, and every part is necessary for the Church to function completely. As we begin the accounts of Jesus through St. Luke s eyes in today s Gospel, we learn how Luke embraced the idea of one Body in Christ. Being willing to do our part is critical to stewardship. Dana s song closes in this way: For you are my body, you re my hands and feet. Speak my word of life to everyone you meet. We all are called.
