2 JUNE 11, 2017 PSALTER WEEK II From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, On this Sunday, and the next one also, our Mother Church presents to us two of the most profound mysteries of our Christian Faith: the Trinity and the Eucharist. A mystery is a reality which can be known to us only through Revelation and not through human logic. Our human knowledge has always acknowledged the existence of God, even if in a distorted form. No human civilization has ever existed without religion. The priesthood is the oldest and most continuous profession in human history. Our human logic, as developed by the great Greek philosophers a few centuries before Jesus, had already reached the conclusion that we are made somewhat in the image of God. But the human mind can conceive God only by a logical and negative knowledge. For example, there can be only one creator, and this one has to be totally above where we human beings are. If we are mortal, then God is immortal; if we are limited, then God is infinite, and so forth and so on. But when Jesus came to us and spoke to us about God, we had a glimpse of the inner mysterious nature of this God! He spoke of Himself as the Son of God, and of the Holy Spirit as the third component of God, causing our human minds either to reject such a Triune God, or to accept it with blind faith and total humility. So we know that God is One and, in a very unknown way, God is Three. Roman Catholics have expressed this mystery with the Latin formula: Una natura - tres personae or One nature - three persons. Let us accept this dogma with joy, because no human mind could ever devise such an illogical statement (akin to the existence of the square circle ). Only God Himself could have passed such knowledge to us, not with the illusion that we could grasp it, but with the hope that we could accept it. Our attitude should not be like that of certain disciples of Jesus who complained: This saying is hard; who can accept it? (Jn 6:60) and returned to their former religion (Jn 6:66), but like Peter s attitude: Master You have the words of eternal life! (Jn 6:68). And to us, whom the Father has drawn to Jesus (Jn 6:65), there is some understanding of this mystery when we ponder the definition that God in Scripture gave to Himself: God is Love (1 Jn 4:16). And love needs a relationship, love needs another person to relate to. In a mysterious divine manner, God has accomplished such triune relationship in His unity. If we live in love, we will be living in God and God lives in us. Some time ago, a parishioner sent me an and he inquired: not having gone to a parochial school, I kept wondering if, except for breaking the Commandments, are there other mortal sins?... The term mortal sin is taken from the bible. We read in 1 John 5:16-17: There is such a thing as Mortal Sin All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not mortal And because John had remarked previously: If the sin is not mortal (1 Jn 5:16), the Catholic Church divides sin into two categories: mortal and venial. The mortal or deadly sin, as its name implies, causes the death of the relationship between God and a person, whereas the venial (from the Latin, Veniale Peccatum - forgivable sin) is a minor offense to God which is forgivable, which means: without need to go to confession. To teach people how to catch the distinction between the two types of sin, the theologians say that a mortal sin (which, if not confessed, will cause us to be condemned to eternal death!) requires that the following three conditions be present in their entire force: 1. Full knowledge and consciousness of what we are doing. 2. Full assent of our will to such thought or action. 3. Serious transgression of the will of God. Being in my 57th year as a priest, I suspect that the most common mortal sins are: 1. Missing Mass on Sundays and Holy Days without serious cause. 2. Not forgiving or hating one s stinky neighbors so that we do not pray for them, and gossip and slander them at any occasion. By the way, many confuse notforgiving with not-forgetting. We will always remember the harm done to us (unless we suffer from Alzheimer's!), but we go beyond such remembrance with a prayer of forgiveness. Actually, such remembrance will make the act of forgiving more meritorious in the eyes of God. 3. Omitting the serious duty to help the poor, the needy, the discriminated against and the social outcast, and the homeless. I hope these few words will help you all! Six Bishops from Connecticut issued formal statements reinforcing teaching of the presence of Jesus Christ in Holy Communion. Among items noted were: 1. Only those who accept and believe what the Catholic Church teaches about the Eucharist can receive in a Catholic Church. 2. All are required to fast from food and drink, except medicine and water, for a least one hour before receiving Communion. 3. Un-baptized persons, including those in RCIA classes, should not receive Communion. 4. No one who prefers receiving Communion on the tongue should be obliged to receive it in the hand. 5. When entering or leaving church, Latin-rite Catholics should genuflect (unless arthritis kills you, as it s killing me); Eastern-rite Catholics usually bow. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry Deacons Bill and Patrick; plus Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence and Sisters Cathy & Marianne

His contact with some Franciscans inspired him to join the Franciscans. He was sent to Italy, where his great oratorical gifts were noted. He was sent by Francis to preach and to teach in northern Italy, first in Bologna and then in Padua. His reputation drew enormous crowds, and the power of his words converted them. Exhausted and ill, he died at age thirty-six, so beloved that he was canonized within the year. He is best known for his help in finding lost objects. May we learn from him that actions speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak. 4 BULLETIN The Trinity - a unity of persons in one and a mutual self-giving - is a reality that also is lived on a human level. There are no two humans closer than a mother and her child. Abortion disrupts this union, and destroys family and societal unity. Standing for life and protecting the unborn means fostering the unity that we see, in its ultimate form, in the Trinity. Life is preserved precisely when it is given away in self-sacrificing love. FIVE QUESTIONS FROM THE KIDS AT SCHOOL TO FR. FAUSTO! (SOME DEEP THEOLOGICAL THOUGHTS!) 1. Why does God let natural disasters happen? 2. Have you ever seen Star Wars? 3. If Jesus didn t come to earth, would there be Christians? 4. Why was King Herod so selfish? 5. About how many times do you pray a day? St. Martha Catholic School and St. Mary Academy are now accepting applications for the 2017/2018 school year. Please contact the schools for information. PASTOR pastor@stmartha.org From glory to glory advancing, we praise you, O Lord; your name with the Father and Sprit be ever adored. From strength unto strength we go forward on Zion s highway to appear before God in the city of infinite day. Thanksgiving, and glory and worship, and blessing and love, one heart and one song have the saints upon earth and above. Ever more to your servants your presence be nigh; ever fit us by service on earth for your service on high. Amen. Orthodox Liturgy of St. James EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Join us in the Carosella Chapel for Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to Noon and Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This ministry is looking for people who are able to commit to a specific hour each week. If interested, please contact the Parish Office. And even if you are not able to commit to a specific time, all are welcome to visit with Jesus! NATIONAL CATHOLIC PLEDGE TO END THE DEATH PENALTY The faithful are invited to join Bishop Frank J. Dewane in signing a national pledge to end the use of the death penalty. The Catholic Mobilizing Network's National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty was announced in Washington, D.C. on May 9, As Chair of the USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, the Bishop was one of the first signatories who have committed to advocate, educate and pray for the end to the use of the death penalty. 5 We become fully human when we become more than human, when we let God bring us beyond ourselves in order to attain the fullest truth of our being. -Pope Francis THE HOLY TRINITY In the Gospel of Matthew 28:19 we hear Jesus instruct his Apostles, Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. This is, of course, one of many references in Holy Scripture to the Holy Trinity which we celebrate on this Solemnity today. When we receive the Eucharist at Mass, we are receiving more than the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ; we are also receiving the Father and the Holy Spirit because they are all One. This concept of Three Persons in one God is surely a mystery beyond our comprehension. We take this belief on faith as part of our Catholic beliefs because our human brains can never fully understand it. We received the Holy Spirit when we were confirmed, but we also received the Father and the Son. When we look at the Tabernacle which is in every Catholic Church throughout the world, we know that Christ is present, but the Father and the Holy Spirit are as well. They all dwell in heaven which means that our Tabernacle might be called a gateway to heaven. Do we think of all this when we come into the church, when we attend Mass? We should. The Holy Trinity is present there every hour of every day and every day of every month and every year. That is one of the reasons we need to attend Mass - to understand and celebrate the Holy Trinity. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
