2 OCTOBER 14, 2018 PSALTER WEEK IV From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, How instructive is the Gospel of today! Notice how Jesus makes a distinction between saving one s soul ( What must I do to share in everlasting life? ), the bare minimum required by God from any Jew in the Old Testament, and the state of perfection: Go, sell what you have and give it to the poor after that come and follow me. If we want to save our souls, we must observe the ten commandments, plus receive the Sacraments (Baptism and Eucharist in the first place), our foundation for salvation. As the good Lord told us, Those who eat this bread will live forever! But some of us are called to a higher degree of loving intimacy with Jesus, renouncing all human comforts and joys to follow the lonely way of Calvary. Anyone can receive the call, man or woman, married or single, rich or poor, in any social state of life, although it is much easier to follow the Lord in a more sustaining band of monks, friars, nuns or sisters practicing the three vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Just think: Looking at Him with love, a special loving relation between God and the one called is thus created. There is also to consider in this Gospel the sad remark of Jesus, when the rich man declined to follow Jesus invitation: It is easier for a camel to pass through a needle s eye than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God. In Judaism, wealth was often taken as a sign of divine favor upon any Jew who followed the Mosaic covenant. In a certain sense, we think the same, considering a good financial position, or good health, or a successful career, as a sign of blessings given to us by God. And so, when a reversal of fortune follows, we are quick to complain bitterly to God. Even a worse scenario follows when we conclude, as soon as illness strikes, that God is punishing us, instead of seeing in His plan the look of love that Jesus reserves for His chosen ones. The cross sent by God is such a mystery for us, and a contradiction of the loving father image that Jesus has told us about, that we remain shaken and mystified in our faith. But in reality, if we could grasp the meaning of today s Gospel, all is so clear and simple; when we suffer, we are crucified with Jesus on the cross! After all, Jesus is on one side of the cross, the back side of the cross is empty, it is our place to be crucified. Let us go and hang with Jesus; our agony will eventually fade away in the shining light of the Resurrection! October 21 is World Mission Sunday. On the day you were baptized, you became a missionary, called by our Lord to share your faith with those around you, and to be part of the Church s mission to the world. Your ongoing support of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith is vital to the missionaries serving in 1,000 dioceses throughout Asia, Africa, parts of Latin America and Europe, and on the Islands of the Pacific. World Mission Sunday, organized by the Propagation of the Faith, is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. Please be as generous as you can be in your prayer and gift next weekend. Please take time to read the message from our Bishop Dewane concerning World Mission Sunday. Last Sunday, in all churches of our diocese a letter was read regarding the action of the Florida Attorney General. For your convenience, this letter by Bishop Frank J. Dewane is printed in its entire length in this bulletin. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love, prayers, support, smiles, cards and gifts you lavished on me last week, for my 83rd birthday. You are such wonderful people! Thank you! Thank you! Let s continue to pray for the soul-healing success of the Synod of Bishops in Rome which is currently in session and will be completed on October 28. This year s focus is Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Jan, John & Jerry Deacons Bill, Patrick & Robert and Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence & Sister Cathy DIOCESE OF VENICE IN FLORIDA Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Sunday, October 21, 2018, the Society for the Propagation of Faith leads us in celebration of World Mission Sunday. World Mission Sunday joins Catholics worldwide into one community of Faith. The Liturgy on that Sunday invites us to recommit ourselves to our common vocation given in Baptism - to be missionaries. This is done through prayer, by participation at the Eucharist, and by supporting World Mission Sunday. Throughout the world, churches and parishioners with low economic means are in need of prayers and generosity. The help we give to missionaries offers individuals of poverty-stricken areas vital assistance. Each year the needs of the Catholic Church in Mission territories grows, as new dioceses are formed, seminaries are opened, and areas devastated by war or natural disasters are rebuilt. The World Mission Sunday Collection in the Diocese of Venice will take place on the weekend of October 20 and 21, Along with your prayers, please be generous in your financial support of the Missions, responding to the vast and urgent needs of evangelization. Thank you for your generous response and prayers for the Missions! I take this opportunity to extend to each of you the assurances of my continued consideration, as well as my prayers for you and your family. Sincerely yours in Christ Frank J. Dewane Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida

3 28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME DIOCESE OF VENICE IN FLORIDA October 5, 2018 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Allow me to express my pastoral concern for you, the Faithful of the Diocese, during these troubling times for our Church. Please be assured that the Diocese of Venice is steadfast in its commitment to protect minors. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has announced an investigation into how the seven Dioceses of Florida have handled allegations of past sexual abuse of minors. Similar inquiries are going on in States around the Country. The Diocese of Venice welcomes the State's inquiry and will cooperate with investigators. This investigation is an opportunity to further promote the goal of protecting children. It is hoped that these efforts foster a response combatting the scourge of sexual abuse, particularly of minors, throughout our entire society. As faithful Catholics, I would like you to be aware that this investigation is not the result of any new allegation of sexual abuse of a minor. The Diocese has taken proactive steps toward the protection of minors and the prevention of future abuse and has undergone regular independent audits. Our Diocesan Review Board is made up of primarily qualified lay professionals, and in the event of an allegation reported to the Diocese involving a minor, the Board advises me if action is needed. These steps ensure that our policies are being properly executed and are effective. Any victim of abuse is encouraged to come forward and must make a report to the Department of Children and Families (DCF Hotline at 1 (800) 96-ABUSE or contact local police). To report abuse by Diocesan personnel or volunteers, please also call the Diocesan Victims Assistance Coordinator at (941) The Church wants any victim of sexual abuse to know their allegation will be taken seriously and that the Diocese of Venice will stand with them as they seek healing. As your Shepherd, I humbly encourage everyone to recall that when faith is tested, it is prayer that helps find the strength to persevere. God's Grace allows us to discover truth, confront it with courage and find healing in the embrace of our Savior. My prayer is that recent revelations will shed the light of God's wisdom on these troubling matters and show Church leaders the future steps needed. Know, I support actions being taken by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to hold bishops to a greater accountability. Once again, I offer my apology to those who have been harmed by abuse. I also wish to express my prayerful support for faithful Catholics who bear the hard-ship of these difficult times. None of us can change the past, but we can make a difference going forward. I pledge continued action to protect minors entrusted to the pastoral care of the Diocese of Venice and to bring healing to victims of abuse while working to strengthen the trust of the Catholic Faithful. May God bless you and your family, Sincerely Yours in Christ Frank J. Dewane Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida ANNUAL RED MASS WENDESDAY, OCTOBER 24 AT 5:30 PM Bishop Frank J. Dewane will celebrate the annual Red Mass at St. Martha Parish. All Catholic members of the legal profession are invited and encouraged to attend. CONGRATULATIONS! 4 BULLETIN PASTOR Heavenly Father...give us love for all people, especially the most vulnerable, and help us bear witness to the truth that every life is worth living. DIOCESE OF VENICE IN FLORIDA Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, With the recent devastating impact of Hurricane Florence in the Carolinas, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is calling upon all Dioceses to support those impacted by Hurricane Florence and any forthcoming disaster/storm that affects us throughout the remainder of this calendar year. Torrential rainfall and catastrophic flooding due to Florence severely damaged and destroyed homes, schools, hospitals, businesses, and churches. Lives have been lost and communities are struggling. Immediate and long-term recovery needs of those affected continue to be apparent. Unfortunately, it is reasonable to expect more of these types of disasters this year. Parishes in the Diocese of Venice will take up an emergency collection the weekend of October 13 & 14, Through the Catholic Charities Network your donations will be used to support those who are the most vulnerable, providing humanitarian aid (water, food, shelter and medical care), as well as long-term efforts to restore communities after widespread destruction. Thank you for your generosity in these difficult times and please continue to pray for victims of all-natural disasters! This opportunity is taken to extend to each of you the assurances of my continued consideration, as well as my prayers for you and your family. Sincerely yours in Christ, Frank J. Dewane Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida ST. MARTHA CATHOLIC SCHOOL ANNUAL CHRISTMAS WREATH FUNDRAISER Students will be in the Church courtyard to take wreath orders on October 20 and 21. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. THE ARIMATHEANS OF ST. MARTHA The name, Arimathean, comes from St. Joseph of Arimathea, who tended to our Lord after his death. Arimatheans attend funerals and memorial Masses as representatives of the faith community. We are seeking committed parishioners to represent St. Martha at funerals and memorial Masses. If an Arimathean minister is available for a particular Mass, he/she simply will attend the liturgy. If you are interested in joining this ministry, please call Geri Roberts at DIOCESE OF VENICE SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM As Christian adults, we have a moral and legal responsibility and are entrusted by God with the spiritual, emotional and physical well-being of minors and vulnerable adults. As they participate in activities within or sponsored by our Diocese, it is our commitment to provide an environment which is safe and nurturing. FR. FAUSTO FALL FESTA October 20, 2018 at 6 p.m. Fr.
