2 SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 PSALTER WEEK II From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, In times past, we Catholic members of the one Church of Jesus were very wary not only of other non-christian religions, but also of our separated Christian sisters and brothers. After all, we did memorize the famous Latin sentence: Extra ecclesiam nulla salus, which literally translated means: There is no salvation outside the Church. The saying naturally hinges on what the words Ecclesia and Salus mean. Obviously, we refer to the word Church as introduced by Jesus Himself in the Gospel of Matthew (16:17-18): Blessed are you Simon bar Jona I say to you, you are Rock and on this rock I will build my church. The term Salus = Salvation means that Jesus freely delivers all mankind from eternal death, and restores all human beings into God s embrace; this is the Catholic dogma of the universal salvific will of God (1 Timothy 2:1-6 and Matthew 26:28 and Romans 11:12, etc.) as expressed in the Creed that we recite every Sunday at Mass. So, how do we understand the saying? The Gospel of today gives us an answer which can steer us in our dealings with other people: Do not stop Him! Jesus is very tolerant of those who follow Him, even if they do not belong to the one Church, or are not in communion with the apostles and their successors (our bishops, with the bishop of Rome at the head of them). Jesus is much more tolerant than His apostles were (see Acts 8:13-19). From all of the above, a few conclusions can be drawn: 1. The Church declares as heresy the doctrine that claims that Jesus died for some predestined people, and not for all humankind (D 1096). 2. It is a theological error to say that Jesus died only for the believers, or that people not incorporated into the church do not receive sufficient grace of salvation (D 1294, 1376, 1646, 1677). 3. From these doctrines of the church, and from today s Gospel, flows the famous dogmatic constitution of the church in the Second Vatican Council, from which I am quoting the following sentences: This holy Council first of all turns its attention to the Catholic faithful. Basing itself on scripture and tradition, it teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is mediator and the way of salvation; He is present to us in His body which is the Church. The Church knows that she is joined in many ways to the baptized who are honored by the name of Christian, but who do not, however, profess the Catholic faith in its entirety, or have not preserved unity or communion under the successor of Peter. For there are many who hold sacred scripture in honor as a rule of faith and of life, who have a sincere religious zeal, who lovingly believe in God the Father Almighty and in Christ, the Son of God and the Savior, who are sealed by baptism which unites them to Christ...These Christians are indeed in some real way joined to us in the Holy Spirit for, by His gifts and graces, His sanctifying power is also active in them, and He has strengthened some of them even to the shedding of their blood. Finally, those who have not yet received the Gospel are related to the People of God in various ways. There is, first, that people to which the covenants and promises were made, and from which Christ was born according to the flesh (Rom 9:4-5): in view of the divine choice, they are a people most dear for the sake of the fathers, for the gifts of God are without repentance (Rom 11:29). But the plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims: These profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind s judge on the last day. Nor is God remote from those who in shadows and images seek the unknown God, since he gives to all men life and breath and all things (Acts 17:25-28), and since the Savior wills all men to be saved (1Tim 2:4). Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or His Church, but nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and moved by grace, try in their actions to do His will as they know it through the dictates of the conscience, those too may achieve eternal salvation October 4th is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (died in 1226 after having received the stigmata in September 1224), patron of ecologists, nature s creatures and creation s lovers; his statue is in our garden next to the fountain. In our country there is a tradition to bless the animals on his feast day, and a few years back we started our own special blessing here at St. Martha. I would love to have the blessing of your pets in our courtyard next Sunday, October 7, at 1:00 p.m. I am inviting all of you who would love to participate in this blessing to bring your pet dogs on leashes, turtles, snakes, birds, and cats in portable airline type cages, horses or elephants and the like outside in the courtyard on the grass on the 2nd Street side. Maybe if your little children do not have any pets, but just stuffed animals, let them bring such toys in, we ll bless them anyway! Next Sunday is also Respect Life Sunday. Appropriately, the 40 Days for Life began on September 26 and will continue until November 4. Please pray the Rosary to stop abortion. During the 40 Days for Life, please show your opposition to the taking of innocent lives by joining the St. Martha Pro-Life group, and walk for Life on October 9. Please take time and read the letter from our Bishop Dewane regarding the collection next week for Respect Life Sunday. The last century of the past millennium was the bloodiest century ever when we count wars, exterminations of civilian people, rampant murders and above all, abortion. We are horrified, and rightly so, at the millions killed in the Nazi concentration camps or in the killing fields of Cambodia, but do we realize that since 1973 we have killed, in our good ole U.S.A., over 54,000,000 babies? Let us make a solemn pledge to God that we will be the defenders of life, the greatest gift given to us by God. We will defend the defenseless babies, the mentally ill, the poor and handicapped, the sick and feeble, the homeless refugees, the elderly, the famished, persecuted and oppressed sisters and brothers, because we are all children of God, Father of all! Otherwise, dulled by a false sense of security because of our national wealth, we will be facing God who will bring us to a bad end! Using a document of our Holy Father, I would like to say a special word to women who have had an abortion. The Church is aware of the many factors which may have

3 26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME influenced your decision and she does not doubt that in many cases it was a painful and even shattering decision. The wound in your heart may not yet have healed. Certainly, what happened was and remains terribly wrong. But GOD FORGIVES ALSO THE SIN OF ABORTION. So the priests absolve, God forgives, and joy and inner peace come back to us sinners. Today, the St. Martha Rosary Makers are having their yearly Rosary Giveaway in the Courtyard after all Masses. All rosaries are made by our Rosary Makers and blessed by our priests. They are offered to you dear parishioners at no cost. Remember dear parishioners that next Sunday is Caritas Sunday. Our Caritas volunteers will be at the church doors after each Mass collecting for the poor and the needy. This past month you donated $3,911, and the need is greater theses days. Please be as generous as you can. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Jan, John & Jerry Deacons Bill, Patrick & Robert and Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence & Sister Cathy THE ARIMATHEANS OF ST. MARTHA The name, Arimathean, comes from St. Joseph of Arimathea, who tended to our Lord after his death. Arimatheans attend funerals and memorial Masses as representatives of the faith community. We are seeking committed parishioners to represent St. Martha at funerals and memorial Masses. If an Arimathean minister is available for a particular Mass, he/she simply will attend the liturgy. 5 The salvation which God offers us is the work of his mercy. - Pope Francis QUESTIONS FROM THE KIDS AT SCHOOL TO FR. FAUSTO! (SOME DEEP THEOLOGICAL THOUGHTS!) When you talk to God, do you pray with him or to him? How do you feel about the priest scandal? What is your favorite time of the year to say Mass? And why? Love you! How did God get made and how did he make people? DIOCESE OF VENICE IN FLORIDA Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, For many years, the Catholic Church has been at the forefront in defending the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. It is our responsibility to do all we can to promote the belief that every life, in all its stages, regardless of age or condition, is truly worth living. Each year Respect Life Sunday falls on the first Sunday in October. This year during the Vigil Mass on October 6th and Sunday, October 7th, Parishes throughout the Diocese of Venice will conduct a special second collection to augment the life-affirming work of the Diocesan Respect Life Office. These funds help facilitate our witness as a faith community in southwest Florida. Please continue to pray for a greater appreciation of the sacredness of all human life and be as generous as you can in this annual collection. May God bless you with a deep appreciation for the gift of life and the courage to defend the sanctity of life. Let us remain united in prayer and action. Sincerely yours in Christ, + Frank J. Dewane Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida Vigésimo Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 30 de septiembre de 2018 La ley del Señor es perfecta del todo y reconforta el alma; inmutables son las palabras del Señor y hacen sabio al sencillo. Salmo 19 (18):8 QUIÉN ESTÁ A NUESTRO FAVOR? Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
