2 JANUARY 21, 2018 PSALTER WEEK III From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Please join us for the 20th Annual Prayer Walk for Life tomorrow, Monday, January 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The 8:30 a.m. Mass will be celebrated by Bishop Frank J. Dewane at our St. Martha Church. Shuttle bus service will be provided from St. Martha to Planned Parenthood where participants will circle the block in prayer for an end to abortion. Those unable to walk are encouraged to participate in Eucharistic Adoration in the Chapel from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Come for an hour or longer. This past Thursday started the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The theme for the 2018 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, "Your Right Hand, O Lord, Glorious in Power," is taken from the book of Exodus 15:6. Throughout the Biblical narrative of salvation, an unmistakable motif is the unrelenting determination of the Lord to form a people whom He could call His own. We, your clergy, wish that you parishioners of St. Martha will assist at Mass and receive Communion, or at least visit the Blessed Sacrament this week, for the unity of all Christians. We have four daily Masses: 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., Noon and 5:30 p.m. Also, the Carosella Chapel is open and the Blessed Sacrament is kept from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for all parishioners, and all downtown workers, so that at least on one day during the week you may pray or receive Jesus in your heart for the unity of all the baptized. Today s Gospel introduces Jesus preaching to his Jewish compatriots, and it does seem that Jesus is repeating John the Baptist s theme; but there is a new element in Jesus preaching: Believe in the GOOD NEWS! God loves us so much that instead of a mortal man sent to us as the Messiah, God sent His only Son, enclosed into a true human being, Jesus! After 2000 years of wars, genocide, crime and untold suffering, we are wondering what happened to Jesus Good News! Wasn t it a farce? Wasn t it a cruel joke? Does this Supreme Being still care? If so, why such evil in the world? Against all these doubts and tragic facts, Jesus Good News still stands firm. One day, when we meet God face to face, we will be shown the true design of God, and we will understand clearly God s wisdom, which now we accept with blind faith. But meantime, let us remember that only through listening and obeying God s message can we save our souls, and we can avoid more catastrophic troubles for ourselves and our heirs. The parable of Jonah in the first reading shows us that God desires not our death and chastisement, but that we repent from our evil ways and live happily with Him here on earth and, after our death, in paradise, never to be separated from His love! Monday, January 22, is the feast of St. Vincent Pallotti, the founder of the Society of Catholic Apostolate, colloquially referred to as Pallottines, of priests, brothers, sisters and lay associates. St. Vincent was born in 1795 in Rome (Italy), where he died in Pope Pius XII declared Vincent Blessed in 1950, and Pope Saint John XXIII declared him Saint in St. Vincent was an innovator. His studies of Sacred Scripture, tradition and theology convinced him that the mission and responsibility of spreading the Faith was incumbent on all baptized people, lay people as well as clergy. He established the Society of the Catholic Apostolate to carry out his vision. Today, throughout the world, we Pallottines number about 2400 priests and brothers, some 4000 sisters and approximately 175,000 associate lay persons. The mission of our Society is clear and simple: The sanctification of all peoples and the spread of the Catholic faith, to be brought about primarily through the reunification of all Churches of the East and West. Jesus prayer was: that all may be one, Father, as you and I are one. As we celebrate the memory of this Roman priest, we are also, in a sense, celebrating our standing as disciples, indeed as apostles, heeding the command of Jesus to go and preach. Fr. Patrick, Fr. Wojciech, Fr. Jan, Br. William, Br. Tom and I are happy to serve you, God s good family of St. Martha, in reaching the goal of becoming perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect. We are happy to have in our service the help of our diocesan clergy and religious. Next Sunday, January 28, begins Catholic Schools Week; it ends on Friday, February 2. There will be an Open House on Wednesday, January 31 from 8:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Please plan to visit the school on that day to tour and celebrate with our children, and to observe and join in our celebration of who we are as a family. St. Martha school is a recipient of a national Blue Ribbon award, and not only exhibits academic excellence, but also shines the light of the living faith. Everyone is invited. This week, we will take up the collection for the Church in Latin America. Your generosity to this collection is invaluable to the future of the faith in this region. Your donations will fund catechesis, marriage and family life programs and seminarian formation. Please support programs like these with a joyful and generous heart, and give extra generously in this week s collection. Fr. Maurice Emelu will be hosting our Parish Mission Sunday, February 4 through Tuesday, February 6. The Mission will begin each evening with the 5:30 p.m. Mass with events following. The focus of the mission will be forgiveness, reconciliation and healing. Please join us for as many evenings as you can! That time of year of catching colds and the danger of the flu is here. Some of us have already suffered! On behalf of all parishioners, please avoid shaking hands and/or kissing at the sign of peace and as you enter and leave the Church. I always encourage the Fist-Bump! If you did not receive a copy of Rediscover Jesus by Matthew Kelly after Christmas Mass, there are still a few available in the Parish Office. Stop by and pick one up! Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Jan, John & Jerry Deacons Bill and Patrick; plus Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence and Sisters Cathy & Marianne

6 Can we continue to stand by when food is thrown away while people are starving? This is a case of inequality. -Pope Francis ST. MARTHA ALTAR SOCIETY The St. Martha Altar Society is looking for new members. They meet the first Monday of every month in the sacristy after the 8:30 a.m. Mass and duties are on Monday and Saturday mornings. Call the Parish Office to learn more about the part they play in our Church family. FROM THE OFFICE OF OUR BISHOP: Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Faithful of the Church in Latin America face many challenges in living out the Faith; yet the light always shines through and hope arises. For the past 50 years, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has helped 25 countries in Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean, confront challenges and facilitate new programs in the sharing of the Faith. The needs in this region of the world are great and can seem insurmountable. The distance in rural areas and deteriorated roads makes attending Mass regularly difficult. Language barriers and lack of resources make catechetical materials problematic to produce. The absence of church buildings, priests, and lay catechists, hampers spreading the message of the Gospel. Your support will allow for pastoral agents to receive training so that they may bring the good news of the Gospel to all our Brothers and Sisters in this part of the world. The Collection for the Church in Latin America will take place in the Diocese of Venice the weekend of January 20 and 21, Please be generous and take this opportunity to share your faith with families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Your support truly makes a difference! Thank you!! I take this opportunity to extend to you the assurances of my prayers for you and your family, and in-turn, ask for your prayers. Have a Blessed and Healthy New Year!! 7 2018 Catholic Faith Appeal What is the Catholic Faith Appeal and for what are its proceeds used? The Catholic Faith Appeal (CFA) is a Diocesan-wide fundraising effort to support programs such as: Pastoral Outreach & Ministries; missions, poor parishes and convents; Catholic Charities; Evangelization; Worship; Respect Life; Peace & Social Justice; Vocations & Seminarians; Catholic Education; Diocesan administrative support services; etc. On an annual basis, parishes in the Diocese of Venice make a required contribution to financially support these efforts. The Catholic Faith Appeal is a means by which all parishioners can take part in helping their Parish to meet its contribution. A Parish Catholic Faith Appeal goal is determined by the income of the Parish and is not based on the number of registered families because our population grows in the winter months from northern visitors. This greatly adds to the success of the Appeal. How does the CFA benefit my parish and me? Thousands of Catholics in the Diocese are directly or indirectly served through Diocesan agencies and programs funded through the Catholic Faith Appeal. In addition, a portion of the money that is pledged over goal will be returned to your Parish for its own programs and services. Why does Catholic Charities do additional fundraising? Approximately 16% of the Diocesan budget is given to Catholic Charities to help support its very worthwhile presence in our Diocese. However, this amount is only a percentage of the money needed to carry out its work. In addition to what the Diocese is able to provide, further fundraising is required. Why are the administrative services included? The mission of the Church is to continue the work of Christ. To do so requires the Diocese to oversee and support more than 1,000 employees in our schools, parishes and agencies. These shared services help streamline operations and reduce the overall cost for everyone. Why are there so many mailings? More than 3.5 million dollars of the appeal comes to us through the mailings. Once you have responded to a CFA mailing or made a gift through your parish, mailings to you will stop with the exception of a thank you letter and tax receipt at the end of the year. Tax receipts are sent to anyone who gives a gift of $250 or more, which is required by the IRS. It is always wise to keep receipts of your charitable giving for audit purposes. How much should I give? As stewards, we should take the time to reflect on our God-given gifts of time, talent and treasure. Giving back to God, either through contributions to our parish or the CFA, should involve a sacrifice, one that reflects God s generosity to us individually. Therefore, your gift is a personal decision between you and God, and should be made after prayerful consideration. Should I make a pledge or a one-time gift? Making a pledge allows you to spread your gift throughout the year, which may make it easier for you to pay, and may also allow you to give a larger gift. Pledge statements are sent out monthly unless otherwise requested. These are simply reminders and not bills. You can pay your pledge anytime before the end of the year. If your situation changes, you may also adjust your pledge. How can I make my gift? We try to make your giving as easy as possible! You can make a gift through checks, credit cards, stocks, direct debit, bequests, charitable gift annuities, matching gift program, online giving at and approved gifts of real estate. Give us a call and we will happily answer your questions ( ) Pinebrook Road Venice, FL "...whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully." (2 Corinthians 9:6) Please use the white CFA envelopes in the pews.
