2 FEBRUARY 26, 2017 From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, The Holy Season of Lent, which prepares us to celebrate the most solemn Christian feast of Easter, starts this coming Ash Wednesday, March 1, when we Catholics mark our foreheads with blessed ashes as the external sign of our inner determination to correct our faults, to make penance for our sins, and to achieve a closer union with Jesus, Our Eternal Love. We Catholics renew this commitment in these 40 days of Lent to Jesus, and we solemnly express such commitment in the renewal of our baptismal promises at Easter. You are very familiar with my rhymes about becoming a SAINT with the capital S : Sacrifice of the Mass, every day during Lent: The greatest sacrifice of all! Scripture reading, a chapter of the Bible a day! Spiritual practices such as going to confession, Rosary, Stations of the Cross, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Search for and Save your friends not attending Church any more. Serve the poor by volunteering at Caritas, Bethesda House, or the St. Vincent De Paul store. Sweets: no cookies, pies, candies until Easter. Sausages, Salami, Prosciutto and other delicacies no! Smoking Forbidden for 40 days (aaaargh!!) Sober for 40 days from alcohol (eat lasagna with Coca Cola). Shows: No TV, movies, operas, parties (except St. Patrick's Day and St. Joseph s Day). Sex a renewed commitment to say no to X or R rated movies no pornographic magazines or pornography on the Web...no sexual or racial harassment...no dirty jokes (how about listening instead to Spirit FM, 90.5 FM). On Ash Wednesday, we will have a special Collection to aid the Catholic Church in Central and Eastern Europe, where great need remains. This collection provides support for basic pastoral programs and makes scholarships available for students studying to serve their local church. These students become vital participants in the renewal of the Church in the region. Visit to learn more and please be generous on Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast. On days of fast one full meal and two lesser meals are allowed. Eating between meals is not permitted. Catholics who have completed their 18th year are bound by this law until the beginning of their 60th year. Ash Wednesday and All the Fridays of Lent are also days of Abstinence. On days of abstinence, meat may not be taken. The law of abstinence binds all Catholics who have completed their 14th year. Stations of the Cross during Lent are on Friday at 9:00 a.m., immediately following the 8:30 a.m. Mass. If you drive your children to school, why not stop at the 7:30 Mass in the church? Whenever I see parents bringing their children to Mass during the week it always brings to my mind Jesus command: Let the children come to me! The PSALTER WEEK IV more our children pray, the stronger in faith they become, and better able to say NO to drugs, violence and sex! The good Lord reminds some of us that it is useless to profess our faith with our lips, but not with our hearts and deeds. The enormity of our sins brings us to the edge of rejection of God s love and of our own eternal salvation. With our hearts steeped in sin and in bad habits, we can become either so obstinate in our anti- Christ ways, or we become so deeply disturbed by our own anxiety, that we give way to deep discouragement and depression and we abandon God s way; feeling not worthy of receiving Holy Communion, or worthy to be reconciled with God in the Sacrament of Penance. The greatest temptation of the devil, as I have said often enough, is the one that makes us say: My sins are too great! God cannot forgive me, and in our desperation we never ask for God s mercy and so it seems that we will never hear the consoling words of Jesus through our confessor: Go in peace, your sins are forgiven. God is merciful and compassionate, and if we are sincerely sorry of our fault, besides forgiving us, He will Himself amend for the evil we have created with our sins, faults, stubbornness and weaknesses. As we see daily in the land of Jesus birth, people burn with unquenchable hatred and resentful vengeance. We want not only justice, but also vengeance, and the cycle of blood, tears and destruction repeats itself with no end in sight. Only God can forgive and can forgo vengeance and punishment. Let us find refuge in His Sacred Heart! Our Master chose Matthew, a public sinner, a hated lackey of the Romans, a tax collector, to share in His Ministry, and today the successors of the apostles (the hierarchy) are still serving the Holy People of God (the Laity from the Greek means just that,) especially with the administration of the sacraments and the governance of the Church. To serve God is the highest duty baptized members of God s people can do with their lives and the call to serve given them. No one can be pressured to serve unless one has received the divine call or vocation (from the Latin Vocare: to call) but we must remember that those who receive such calls are perfectly free to say yes or no to the Lord. It is not a sin to say NO to a more perfect unity of life with Jesus, although it is evident that the Lord s plan would not be fulfilled, as the episode of the young rich man shows us in the Gospel (Mt 19: ) But even if we say YES, it will not change us into saints...pray for us sinners! So when you, my dear people, hear or read about the failures and sins of deacons, priests and bishops, please remember that we clerics are chosen by God not because of any super-human quality, but because of a mysterious and inexplicable design of God on our lives to which, sometimes foolishly and sometimes generously, we have answered yes! As the song says, Here I am, Lord. Is it I Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. Please pray for us clerics; we are not perfect, just forgiven! On Wednesday, March 8 we will celebrate our Annual Feast of Abraham with Rabbi Brenner Glickman of Temple Emanu-El and Imam Mohamed Benkhaled of the Islamic Society of Sarasota and Bradenton. The service, highlighting mutual respect

3 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time and understanding, will be in Fausto Center at 6:00 p.m. followed by all joining in a communal meal. Unfortunately, tickets are sold out, but add your name to the list at the front desk in case of a cancellation. We thank you for your continued support of this annual event! How should we Catholics think, believe and act toward our ancestors the Jews? Remember that they are the closest believers to us, in the sense that both they and we use the greatest part of the Bible, the Old Testament, as the Second Vatican Council teaches: Since Christians and Jews have such a common spiritual heritage, this sacred Council wishes to encourage and further mutual understanding and appreciation. This can be obtained, especially, by way of biblical and theological enquiry and through friendly discussions. Even though the Jewish authorities and those who followed their lead pressed for the death of Christ (cf. John 19:6), neither all Jews indiscriminately at that time, nor Jews today, can be charged with the crimes committed during his passion. It is true that the Church is the new people of God, yet the Jews should not be spoken of as rejected or accursed as if this followed from holy Scripture. Consequently, all must take care, lest in catechizing or in preaching the Word of God, they teach anything which is not in accord with the truth of the Gospel message or the spirit of Christ. Indeed, the Church reproves every form of persecution against whomsoever it may be directed. Remembering, then, her common heritage with the Jews and moved not by any political consideration, but solely by the religious motivation of Christian charity, she deplores all hatreds, persecutions, displays of antisemitism leveled at any time or from any source against the Jews. Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions from Vatican Council II Next Sunday is Caritas Sunday. There will be volunteers at the doors of the church collecting for the poor and the needy. In February, we collected $5,501 at the church doors. When you wonder: How much should I give? remember the amount you tipped your waiter or waitress the last time you went to a restaurant for dinner. God will reward you. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry Deacons Bill and Patrick; plus Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence and Sisters Cathy & Marianne ASH WEDNESDAY MASS SCHEDULE: 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., Noon, and 5:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. Vietnamese (Fausto Center) Ashes will be distributed after all Masses. 4 BULLETIN PASTOR Mother-child bond The first reading asks, "Can a mother forget her infant, be without tenderness for the child of her womb?" The comparison of the mother-child bond to God's own care for us reflects the fact that God, in giving us all life, has also entrusted our lives to the care of one another. Él no dice: No coman. No cocinen. No compren ropa. Él dice: No te preocupes. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Very Rev. This collection provides vital funding for our brothers and sisters living in countries that were once under communist rule. Restoring the Church, in both its structures and its spiritual life, has been difficult, but with your support we can help build a brighter future for this region. In Estonia, for example, religious observance is rare and very little funding is available to assist youth in learning about Christianity or the Catholic faith. Last year, the Collection for CCEE provided support to a summer camp program for youth. About 30 middle-school aged boys attended the camp where they not only learned about the Catholic faith but also had opportunities to attend Mass and even receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. With your support the faith is able to flourish in this younger generation. In order for the vital work being done in this region of the world to continue, help is needed. Your financial assistance will allow for building the future of the Catholic Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Please give generously to the CCEE Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe and for the Faithful. May God continue to bless you! Thank you for your generosity! I take this opportunity to extend to you my continued consideration as well as my prayers on this Ash Wednesday, as we begin our Lenten Journey. Sincerely yours in Christ, + Bishop Frank J. Dewane Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida
