2 AUGUST 5, 2018 PSALTER WEEK II From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Today s Gospel continues the teaching on the Eucharist by Jesus Himself, with His prophecy of the gift of the Eucharist, which was given to us at the Last Supper: I myself am the bread of Life. We have to ponder three sentences of the passage: 1) You are looking for me because you have eaten your fill of the loaves. Have you noticed how many times we pray hard only for material reasons: a new joy, a new car, house Are we asking God for holiness? Patience? Faith? 2) You should be working...for food that remains unto life eternal. Are we praying enough for eternal salvation? We may kill ourselves for social position or financial security but what profit is it to us if we die millionaires, but are forever in hell? 3) No one who comes to me shall ever be hungry, Jesus said! If we receive Holy Communion weekly or, even better, daily, we will have great peace of mind and inner joy. Peace the world cannot give us, but Jesus can, and does give when, after receiving Him in Holy Communion, He passes on His divine strength to us during the silent adoration of our God. Just sneak a view of paradise! After what I wrote last Sunday about the Eucharist, some asked me to make sure to have the official canonical laws of Mother Church re-printed, and so here they are: The rules of our Holy Church on Holy Communion are as follows from Canon 844: 1. Catholic ministers may licitly administer the sacraments to Catholic members of the Christian faithful only and, likewise, the latter may licitly receive the sacraments only from Catholic ministers with due regard for 2, 3, and 4 of the canon, and canon Whenever necessity requires or a genuine, spiritual advantage suggests, and provided that the danger of error or indifferentism is avoided, it is lawful for the faithful for whom it is physically or morally impossible to approach a Catholic minister, to receive the sacraments of penance, Eucharist and anointing of the sick from non-catholic ministers in whose churches these sacraments are valid. 3.Catholic ministers may licitly administer the sacraments of penance, Eucharist and anointing of the sick to members of the Oriental churches that do not have full communion with the Catholic Church, if they ask on their own for the sacraments and are properly disposed. This holds also for members of the other churches which, in the judgment of the Apostolic See, are in the same condition as the Oriental churches as far as these sacraments are concerned. 4. If the danger of death is present or in other grave necessity, in the judgment of the diocesan bishop or the Conference of Bishops, Catholic ministers may licitly administer these sacraments to other Christians who do not have full communion with the Catholic Church, who cannot approach a minister of their own community and on their own ask for it, provided they manifest Catholic faith in these sacraments and are properly disposed. 5. For the cases in 2, 3 and 4, neither the diocesan bishop nor the Conference of Bishops is to enact general norms except after consultation with at least the local competent authority of the interested non-catholic church or community. Some parishioners still do not know about the privilege of receiving Jesus twice a day, as granted by the late Pope St. John Paul II in Let me remind all of you, dear friends, of the necessary conditions to receive Jesus in Holy Communion, as we all remember them well from the old catechism. They have changed little since the Second Vatican Council. Now we may receive Holy Communion twice a day, and the fast of one hour for communion has been granted to all the faithful. (One hour has to be measured with Italian not Anglo-Saxon precision!) The other rules have not been changed, especially the necessity of being in the state of Grace, which means without mortal sin staining our soul. In case of an emergency (on the battlefield, for example), when there is no time to go to confess our mortal sins, our tender Mother Church allows us to express our deep sorrow for our mortal sins, say an Act of true Contrition, go to Holy Communion, and then, as soon as possible (within a month), go to confession. This is naturally the merciful exception to the general rule, lest we commit the more serious sin of sacrilege, as the Bible teaches us: Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily, will have to answer for the Body and Blood of the Lord (1 Cor 11: 27). Only Catholics can receive Holy Communion, because it is the sign of belonging to the true church of Christ, and the sign of Christian Unity! And, as St. Ignatius teaches us, Jesus in Holy Communion makes many of us One Body, bringing to unity all those who receive Him. Just as one bread is made from thousands of small wheat grains growing in the great plains, and on the hills, Jesus makes us one. Today, August 5 is the feast of Our Lady of the Snows, more popularly known in Rome as Santa Maria Maggiore, the biggest Church in the world dedicated to our Mother in Heaven; one of the four major Basilicas of Rome, the other three being St. John the Baptist (Rome s Cathedral), St. Peter on the Vatican Hill, and St. Paul outside the walls. According to an old Roman tradition, Pope Liberius ( ) had a dream of the Blessed Mother asking him to build a church in her honor above one of the seven hills of Rome that would be covered by snow that day. When the Pope woke up because of a terrible summer storm and heard that the Esquilin Hill was totally covered by huge hail stones the size of a man s fist, he sequestered the huge building of the Esquilinae Thermae and turned it into a Church, which was rebuilt and dedicated by Pope Sextus III ( ) a couple of years after the Council of Ephesus (431), in Perpetual Memory of the title Theotokos (Mother of God) given to Mary by the Bishops of the Council. It is a Church very dear to my heart, because in this beautiful Basilica I was baptized,

Today is Caritas Sunday, when the members of Caritas (all volunteers) seek your donations at the doors of the church to help them with money to continue to assist the needy of our area. Just walking downtown you can see how many people we have who need assistance in our area alone. Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan, Archbishop of New York and Chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Committee on Pro-Life Activities, invited all people of good will to join in this campaign of prayer that the change in the U.S. Supreme Court will move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law and welcomed in life. As part of the USCCB Call to Prayer, participants will receive weekly prayer reminders by text message or . In addition to the current invitation to fast on Fridays, participants will be encouraged to pray one Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be for this intention and will receive important facts about how Roe is not health care, is bad law, and fails women. Cardinal Dolan noted: "As soon as Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement, pro-abortion groups began lobbying the U.S. Senate to reject any nominee who does not promise to endorse Roe v. While the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops does not support or oppose the confirmation of any presidential nominee, we can and should raise grave concerns about a confirmation process which is being grossly distorted by efforts to subject judicial nominees to a litmus test of support for Roe v.
