2 MARCH 10, 2019 PSALTER WEEK I From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Our Lenten Season has started. Today is the First Sunday of Lent. Let us make it holy by our sacrifices and prayers so that on Good Friday, when we kneel down to kiss Jesus on the Cross, we will feel that we have fulfilled His command: If you want to be my disciples, pick up your cross everyday and follow me. Remember that Masses are at 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., Noon and 5:30 p.m. each weekday. And during Lent, the Stations of the Cross will following the 8:30 a.m. Mass on Friday mornings. The gospel today is presenting how the devil tempts the followers of Jesus: 1.Through our body s weaknesses (hunger, alcohol, sex, drugs, power). 2.Through doubts about God s power. 3.Through an inversion of divinity; asking us to have material abundance in selling our souls to the devil through satanic or magic cults. With Jesus it is easy to say NO! Temptations are occasions either of failure, when our relationship to God is cold, or of triumph, if we stick to Jesus! Let us triumph with Jesus over the devil; and if we fail, let us joyfully receive Jesus forgiveness in confession. St. Martha confession schedule is: Sunday through Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the church, and Saturdays, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., in the reconciliation room in our courtyard. Today, Bishop Frank. J. Dewane will celebrate the Rite of Election at Epiphany Cathedral at 2:30 p.m. The Election of Candidates for Christian Initiation is the focal point of the Church s concern for the Catechumens. We send our Catechumens and Candidates from St. Martha with our prayers. We pray with our RCIA members and team as they journey to the reception of the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil. On Wednesday, March 13 we will celebrate our Annual Feast of Abraham with Temple Emanu-El and the Islamic Society of Sarasota and Bradenton. The service, highlighting faith in one God and creator, and mutual respect and understanding, will be in Fausto Center at 6:00 p.m. followed by all joining in a communal meal. This celebration is an almost insignificant token to put our religions together. Since I became a Knight of the Holy Sepulcher, in 1982, I was very much in pain in seeing the plight of the Palestinian Christians, combined by the hatred and fratricide terrorist war between our Jewish and Muslim brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. Only prayer and God s help can do the miracle of peace in the land of the Prince of Peace. But I also thought, what could I do in my little corner of the world? So together, St. Martha Parish and Temple Emanu-El with Rabbi Simon started to pray to God for peace while sharing a friendship kosher meal. A couple of years later, Hassan Hammami of the Greater Sarasota Muslim Association joined in. And now the three great religions, so much interconnected, are together to beg God for peace and forgiveness of our hatred. When we pray and celebrate together, we, who claim Abraham as our father in the faith, are just a tiny seed of joyous peace in a world taken by insane rivalry and self destruction. As Cardinal Lecroix well said: Men and women of dialogue: This is what we are called to be. Full of respect and truth. Like Jesus, let us be mindful of the needs of those we live with. Let us learn to know them and to advance with them. We have a lot to gain from listening, meeting and living together. Let s consider what Vatican II said some 50 years ago: The Church has also a high regard for the Muslims. They worship God, who is one, living and subsistent, merciful and almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, who has also spoken to men. They strive to submit themselves without reserve to the hidden decrees of God, just as Abraham submitted himself to God s plan, to whose faith Muslims eagerly link their own. Although not acknowledging him as God, they venerate Jesus as a prophet, his virgin Mother they also honor, and even at times devoutly invoke. Further, they await the day of judgement and the reward of God following the resurrection of the dead. For this reason they highly esteem an upright life and worship God, especially by way of prayer, almsdeeds and fasting. Over the centuries many quarrels and dissensions have arisen between Christians and Muslims. The sacred Council now pleads with all to forget the past, and urges that a sincere effort be made to achieve mutual understanding; for the benefit of all men, let them together preserve and promote peace, liberty, social justice and moral values. (Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions, Vatican Council II) Just a friendly reminder, please do not park in the First Baptist Church parking lot on 2nd Street. St. Martha has an additional parking lot across Fruitville Road for our parishioners. But remember to cross at the light at Orange Avenue, let God be in charge of when you will go to Paradise! Over the past few weeks you have heard from clergy and lay parishioners regarding the Catholic Faith Appeal and the Offertory Campaign. You dear parishioners responded generously and we appreciate all your support of St. Martha Parish and the Diocese! On February 4th our beloved Holy Father, on the first visit to the United Arab Emirate, signed with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, a document on Human Fraternity. The pope did remark the following explanation of the document: 1. The Document was prepared with much reflection and indeed prayer. Both the Grand Imam with his team, and I with mine, prayed a great deal to make this Document come to fruition. Because for me there is only one great danger at this moment: destruction, war hatred among us. And if we believers are not able to shake hands, embrace, kiss one another and pray, then our faith will be defeated. This, Document springs from faith in God who is Father of all and Father of peace and condemns all destruction, all terrorism, from the first instance of terrorism in history, which is that of Cain. 2. The Document was crafted in the spirit of the Second Vatican Council.

3 1ST SUNDAY OF LENT 3. If someone feels uncomfortable, I understand this; it is not a daily occurrence, and it is not a step backward. It is a step forward, but one that comes after 50 years, from the Council, which must be developed. 4 B ULLETIN Maya discovered she was pregnant six months into her freshman year of college. When her son was born, she placed him with a very kind adoptive family; she just knew they were the right choice. Now, years later, Maya emphasizes the importance of offering ongoing support to expectant mothers considering adoption. St. Martha Service Club is collecting trial size toiletries during Lent. The items will be used to make Blessing Bags for the Resurrection House which is a non-profit, faith-based organization that serves as a day resource center to the homeless of Sarasota County. Alguien una vez dijo que la tentación surge cuando se está cansado y rendido; y el mal viene y hace una sugerencia perfectamente razonable.
