2 OCTOBER 1, 2017 PSALTER WEEK II From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, The Gospel of today is very easy to understand when we see Israel, the nation chosen by God to save the world (as St. Paul said: salvation comes from the Jews ), in the person of the elder son, and we, the Gentiles, are represented in the person of the younger son. Many Israelites believed in Jesus (all first Christians were Jews, just like Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the apostles, the pious ladies who served the Lord), but, save a few notable exceptions, the leadership did not, and the leaders persecuted The Way (the original name given by the Sanhedrin to Jesus disciples). Enmity between Christians and Jews has unfortunately continued up to the last century, with terrible consequences for all mankind. But please note that Jesus parable calls us Brothers, and it is about time that we act exactly in the way that Jesus wants us to act: loving one another and actively helping one another. We have to erase 1,900 years of persecution and enmity. Allegorically, we can apply the parable to all modern Christians. The good Lord gives us inspiration and suggestions either immediately, or through our Guardian Angel, or through a human being. Sometimes we shun and reject such suggestions and, in the words of St. Augustine, we know that we are making the wrong choice: I am afraid that the Lord knocks at the door of my heart, waiting uselessly for me to open, and then leaving, maybe never to come back to me. St. Augustine is a little bit fearful, but God will move our hearts again. We ll regret our wrong choices, and then we will do the will of God, opening our hearts and actions to follow what God suggests for us to do. Let us then follow Jesus invitation to do His will, as the younger son did in the parable. This Sunday, October 1, has been designated as Respect Life Sunday. The Catholic Church remains at the forefront in speaking out on the issue of the sanctity of life, from conception to natural death, regardless of age or condition. Pope Francis said, Even the weakest and most vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor are masterpieces of God s creation, made in his own image, destined to live forever, and deserving of the utmost reverence and respect. If you are interested in joining any one of the Respect Life committees, call our parish representatives, Jim & Peg Styer, at If you would like to walk with St. Martha Church in the annual 40 Days for Life Prayer Vigil, on Tuesday, October 3 or Saturday, October 14, at the Planned Parenthood facility on Central Ave., please contact David & Paula Shigley, at Today we will have the annual collection for the organizations that support life and that request needed financial assistance. See the letter from our Bishop in this bulletin, and be as generous as possible. Remember we do not have a second collection. Please be generous in our only collection. In these days, we have the two great feasts of the Angels, the messengers of God. This past Friday, September 29, we celebrated the feast of the three Archangels (head angels), Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, and on this Monday, October 2, we have the memorial of the Guardian Angels, established by Pope Clement X in Nowadays, the angels are receiving a lot of popular attention, even in the mass media. Let us review the Doctrine of our Church with a famous Catholic Theologian, R. McBrien: The Greek word, aggelos, is the translation of the Hebrew Mal ak, which means messenger. The existence of angels is of theological relevance here for two reasons: 1. Angels remind us that there is more to the created order than what we actually see, feel, hear and taste; and 2. All such spiritual forces, other than God, are less than God; i.e., they, like us, are part of the created order, and are not themselves rivals of God in the production of good or the insertion of evil into the world. The official teaching that angels exist as creatures of God is given by the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215, and by the First Vatican Council in In the Bible, angels generally function, as their name suggests, as messengers of God (2 Samuel 14:17; 2 Kings 19: 35; Exodus 14: 19, and in the Book of Revelation.) Since they are intelligent creatures with freedom, angels have the capacity to reject God, as we do. Those angels which have rejected God are portrayed as demons in league with Satan (1 Corinthians 15: 24; Ephesians 5:2). Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon. The dragon and its angels fought back, but they did not prevail and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. The huge dragon, the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who deceived the whole world, was thrown down to earth, and its angels were thrown down with it. (Rev 12:7-9) Let us entrust ourselves to the angels powerful intercession on our behalf. October is Rosary Month, when, remembering the great victory of the combined Christian fleet at Lepanto (October 7, 1571) over the Muslim Turkish fleet, we Catholics pray the daily Rosary. Again, today, we are facing a similar assault on Christianity. May Mary, venerated by our Muslim brothers and sisters, and us Christians, help us all to enjoy religious freedom! Wednesday, October 4, is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (died in 1226 after having received the stigmata on September 14, 1224), the patron of ecologists, nature s creatures and creation s lovers; his statue is in our garden next to the fountain. In our country, there is a tradition to bless the animals on his feast day. I would love to have the blessing of your pets in the courtyard today, October 1, at 1:00 pm. I am inviting all of you who would love to participate in this blessing to bring your pets...dogs on leashes, turtles, snakes, birds, alligators, and cats in portable airline type cages; horses or elephants and the like, outside the courtyard, on the grass on the 2nd Street side. Maybe, if your little children do not have any pets, but just stuffed animals, let them bring their dogs, giraffes, bears, rabbits, cats, so that they may not feel cutoff from the Church blessing. A word to the dog owners...please let your dogs circle the trees outside the courtyard Thank you!! Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, John & Jerry Deacons Bill and Patrick; plus Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence and Sisters Cathy & Marianne

3 RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY S. M B S Mondays from 6 to 7 pm - Geenen Hall Tuesdays from 9:15 to 10:15 - Conf. Rm ALL ARE WELCOME! ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI OCTOBER 4 Francesco Bernardone was born in Assisi, Italy. The son of a wealthy silk merchant, he survived severe illness as a young soldier and prisoner of war, and he decided to serve God and the poor. After using family money to restore the local church building, he was disinherited by his father. He lived on alms, continuing to repair churches and working to build up the Church by preaching repentance. He recruited others, and a rule was approved. By 1219, they numbered 5,000. Francis inspired thousands to lead lives of poverty, simplicity, and humble service, delighting in creation and consumed with love for Christ. May we follow his advice: Sanctify yourself and you will sanctify society. Fausto Parish Center Today, our Parish will celebrate the 90th Anniversary of its raising from mission status to be a parish. The date was October 1, 1927 This is the fourth part of a four-part series presenting the story of the growth of the Catholic Church in our part of Southwest Florida in the years leading up to (1927): St. Martha Mission becomes a Parish. Sarasota and its Catholic community experienced rapid growth during the early 1920 s. The frequency of Masses at the St. Martha mission increased from twice a month to every Sunday. The lack of an available priest to serve as pastor was the main reason that St. Martha did not become a parish in The new year of 1927 dawned spectacularly for Sarasota, with the opening of the El Vernona, Sarasota s largest and most luxurious hotel. February, 1927 saw the opening of the Bobby Jones Golf Course. In June, the Tamiami Trail was completed and opened all the way to Miami. In September, Sarasota high school students attended classes for the first time in the new Sarasota High School. About the same time, reports came from St. Augustine that Bishop Barry was ready to assign a priest to serve congregations at St. Joseph in Bradenton and St. Martha in Sarasota, making them parishes. Bishop Barry assigned Fr. Charles L. Elslander, pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church, Tallahassee to be the pastor. This arrangement would last for two months, until a priest would become available for St. Joseph. On the morning of Sunday, October 1, Fr. Elslander would say two Masses, the first at St. Martha and the second at St. Joseph in Bradenton. In attendance at the St. Martha Mass were 132 parishioners and guests. Later that evening, Fr. Elslander was treated to a gala reception and dinner at the new Whitfield Estates Country Club. Some two hundred guests assembled to welcome the new pastor. Fr. Elslander had to convince Bishop Barry to officially name the new parish St. Martha, which name the members of the mission church had been calling it almost from the beginning. Normally, the bishop names new parishes. It took a lot of correspondence and a lot of convincing, but Bishop Barry finally agreed, and it was officially made St. Martha Church. Fr. Elslander s first task was to establish a schedule of Masses and services for both St. Marth and St. Joseph. Next, he organized Sunday School in the absence of Catholic schools. St. Martha s first schedule of services called for 9 a.m. Sunday School followed by Mass at 10 a.m. and Sunday evenings at 8 p.m. Fr. Elslander had rosary, sermon, and Benediction. Daily Mass was at 7 a.m. and Fr. Elslander conducted special devotions at 7:30 p.m. on Friday evenings. Until 1954 St. Martha was the only Catholic church in Sarasota County. From this beginning sprang thirteen other daughter and granddaughter parishes. One of them, the eldest daughter, Epiphany in Venice, became the Cathedral Parish with erection of the Diocese of Venice in In December, 1927, St. Martha became the Circus Church, when Ringling Brothers moved its winter quarters to Sarasota and many Catholic circus performers came to worship. On the eve of World War II, St. Martha constructed and dedicated the present church with money raised by benefit performances put on by Ringling Brothers on the church grounds (the church that the Circus built). During World War II, St. Martha served breakfast after Sunday Masses to troops stationed at nearby flight training bases, using the former mission church, now turned into the Parish Hall. In December 1950, St. Martha opened its grade school, the first Catholic elementary school in Sarasota County. The parish continues to grow and serve as the Mother Church for Sarasota County.

4 BULLETIN This is Respect Life Sunday, the start of Respect Life Month. Although we often think of abortion as the primary life issue, there are many other life concerns: contraception, reproductive technologies, embryo research, health care, persons with disabilities, the elderly, assisted suicide, euthanasia, the death penalty. Let our priority in all of them be based on the words of Jesus: "I came that all may have life, and have it to the full." PASTOR O Jesus, whose face is the sole beauty that ravishes my heart, I may not behold here upon earth the sweetness of your glance or feel the inexpressible tenderness of your kiss. I bow to your will, but I pray you to imprint in me your divine likeness, and I beg you to so inflame me with your love that it may quickly consume me and I may soon reach the vision of your glorious face in heaven. Amen. St. Therese of Lisieux ANNUAL RED MASS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25 AT 5:30 PM ST. MARTHA PARISH Mark your calendars to join Bishop Frank J. Dewane and the Catholic Lawyers Guild Committee to celebrate the Annual Red Mass here at St. Martha Parish. The purpose of this Liturgy is to pray that the Holy Spirit grant special graces and guidance upon those who work in our civil system. This is something that has come about through the request of several legal professions in the District and has developed into a local tradition. Copyright J. S.
