3 PSALTER WEEK I AUGUST 23, 2015 From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, TODAY S GOSPEL SHOWS US THE REJECTION OF JESUS BY SOME OF HIS DISCIPLES, AFTER HE IDENTIFIED HIMSELF AS THE EUCHARISTIC BREAD. They said: This sort of talk is hard to endure! How can anyone take it seriously? How many socalled Jesus disciples have echoed such words in the last 2,000 years of the Church? They have abandoned the only true Church of Jesus to follow their own path, made in the measure of their human brains, and not with trust in God s word, abandoning then the real Jesus. But to us, the Catholics who follow the Pope, the successor of Peter, Jesus asks: Do you want to leave me, too? Our answer, coming from our loving hearts, warmed by our unshakable faith, is the same answer of the first Pope: Lord, to whom shall we go we are convinced that you are God s holy one. Notice how the believing disciples around Jesus understood exactly what Jesus meant, putting to rest any attempt to interpret Jesus words in any other way, as has been done through the centuries. The reward for Peter s faith was the disciples presence at the Last Supper, when Jesus separated - - with two blessings - - His body (bread) from His blood (wine), signifying what would happen the following day on Calvary, when the Roman lance opened Jesus side, separating the last drop of blood from His body. This is why we refer to the Holy Mass as the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, re-living Jesus sacrifice on the cross. By the way have you noticed after the sign of peace, the priest takes the host, breaks it, and places a small piece in the chalice? At this time, the priest reminds us that, in joining Jesus Body, the host, in the chalice, that Jesus is RISEN, IS IN HEAVEN, BODY, BLOOD, SOUL AND DIVINITY! Without the Eucharist (and, also, the other sacraments), our house is a wall with a door (Baptism), which introduces us to four empty walls without roof, or rooms or furniture. It is not home, but an enclosure exposed to all storms Thank God, we are Catholics! By the way, when we assemble for Mass, we Christians are becoming the lightning rod of God s anger toward the evil in the world! Through the sacrifice of Jesus, in which we take part, forgiveness comes to all of Sarasota s people, good and bad! MANY OF US WERE FORTUNATE TO HAVE BEEN EDUCATED IN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS. Many children of our parish do not have such good fortune, and I am appealing to you, dear friends, to help good practicing Catholic children attend St. Martha s School with the full one-year tuition: BE A ST. MARTHA S ANGEL! As Edmund Albright wrote: We are not a wealthy parish and you have been called on repeatedly for donations, but these little ones are the parish s future. They will replace us in the pew as worshipers, as ushers, as volunteers, and maybe even as priests or nuns. You are part of the foundation of St. Martha s. Please help our parish grow and flourish. Help these children who will have to be placed elsewhere without your help. We will gratefully accept any partial sum you may give us Please help! Share the Catholic education you were privileged to have received with those who are too poor to afford it. SOMETIMES PEOPLE ASK IF OUR ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH (one billion and 200 million strong in the world) is in decline. Our United States Council of Catholic Bishops says that Catholic membership is up, but the percentage of those who go faithfully EVERY SINGLE SUNDAY is down. However, our U.S. Church is almost at the top of other nations in terms of attendance, and it is #1 in monetary support for missionary ministry. The shortage of priests, especially, but also brothers and sisters, is REAL. The closing of Catholic Schools is SAD, although we are now building (except during the present downturn of the economy) new schools, and the enrollment is up, and increasing constantly. But the increase of lay ministries is ASTOUNDING, and a true blessing from God! Years ago, scandals among the Catholic clergy found immediate response in the media, not only because of anti-catholic bias in our country, but because even non-catholic people expect the Catholic cleric (bishop, priest and deacon) to be held to a much higher mystical standard than even the U.S. President and politicians, or, for that matter, other faiths ministers. So my dear parishioners let us pray for vocations to religious life and clerical vocations! I SEE SOME MALE CHUCKLES AND NOT-TOO-HARD- TO-HIDE SMIRKS WHEN TODAY WE HEAR PROCLAIMED EPHESIANS SENTENCE: Wives should be submissive to their husbands Without realizing that the other sentence says: Husbands love your wives, as Christ loved the Church. Jesus died for us, the Church: Are you husbands ready to die for your wives? And if the answer is yes, then any other favor or need of hers is small change a piece of cake or is this a wishful, unreal dream of a bachelor priest? DEACON KEVIN MCKENNEY OF BETHESDA HOUSE, CATHOLIC CHARITIES would like to say thank you to the staff and participants of this year s Summer Activity week for their generous donation of 176 pounds of food for the clients at Bethesda House. He says, We all know that Jesus calls us to help those less fortunate than ourselves...and you did that with your donations! Thanks! Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha s priests: Frs. Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry; Deacons Bill, Patrick, & Kevin; Brs. Bill, Tom, Paul & Lawrence and Srs. Cathy & Marianne 2015 YEAR OF CONCECRATED LIFE A good vocation is simply a firm and constant will in which the person who is called must serve God in the way and in the places to which Almighty God has called him. St. Francis De Sales ( )
4 St. Martha Roman Catholic Church PRO-LIFE CORNER Joshua says in the first reading, "Decide today whom you will serve." The Church does not reject "freedom of choice," properly understood. Pocas veces vemos a Jesús tan vulnerable. Pedro y los apóstoles escogieron quedarse. Qué vamos a hacer nosotros? Copyright J.S. Paluch Co. The Bible in 3 Years You may have heard that if you attend Mass every day, in three years you will have heard the entire Bible. Although not quite accurate, this idea is based on the three-year cycle of Scripture readings two at each daily Mass and three on Sunday. By some estimates, you would hear about 90% of the Bible in three years if you went to Mass every day. Our readings are how most of us hear the Bible in detail. In today s First Reading, Joshua s main point is that each of us has a choice when it comes to deciding if we will serve the Lord or satisfy our own self-interests. This is the stewardship choice addressed by St. Paul in the Second Reading as well. Paul s admonition is Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ. Although some take umbrage at the idea of being subordinate, Paul means we need to consider others first before ourselves, and we need to find joy in others successes. That is a humble approach to relationships and the stewardship attitude. Following the Lord, living in the way He expects, is not always easy, nor was it intended to be easy. That is our challenge when we make choices. As Christians, we need to learn that just like the Apostles in today s Gospel, there is really nowhere else to go. From The Catholic Steward Just a reminder! If you park across Fruitville, please cross at the corner with the traffic light.
