2 NOVEMBER 12, 2017 PSALTER WEEK IV From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, So sad that a deranged mind has seen fit to kill people worshiping in a Texas church where it seems his in-laws did attend: pray for the end of hatred and the triumph of the love of God, in whose company those martyred people are now. Pray for the triumph of God! Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, president of the USCCB, issued the following statement: I extend my prayers and the prayers of my brother bishops for the victims, the families, the first responders, our Baptist brothers and sisters, indeed the whole community of Sutherland Springs. We stand in unity with you in this time of terrible tragedy - as you stand on holy ground, ground marred today by horrific violence. We ask the Lord for healing of those injured, His loving care of those who have died and the consolation of their families. Today s Gospel is based on the customs of Israel at Jesus times. The groom would go in the evening to the bride s house and was met by the bridesmaids who were young ladies, obviously virgins themselves, who with lighted up lamps would lead the nuptial procession. As it happened, the groom was late and the organized bridesmaids were smart enough to carry flasks of reserve oil for their lamps, so they could weather the delay. But the absent-minded bridesmaids had to leave the procession to find fuel for their lamps, and when back to the spot, they found no one. They rushed to the groom s house, but the groom didn t receive them. Jesus then gives us a warning: stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour when God stops the clock of our terrestrial life. Heart attack, an act of terrorism, a fatal traffic accident can cut our lives suddenly, and we will find ourselves facing God s judgement: will we be in a state of grace? Let s be ready and in the state of grace. Last week we celebrated Rome s Cathedral. If you have visited any basilica in Rome, the guards will not allow women with skimpy or sexy clothing. Here in Sarasota, a beach city, sometimes we have a cavalierly attitude about church dress code. Let s review the rules of conduct in church. We must be conscious of Jesus presence in church and conduct ourselves according to the faith we profess with our lips, not according to our climate, hot and, even in winter, usually warm. The etiquette of church conduct starts at home. 1. Dress modestly. What might be sexy and appealing at a bar, a beach or at a party, is an insult to God. We are so politically correct in our speech and conduct that we would not dream to offend anyone, but we have no scruples to offend God. Remember that God has created us and He knows perfectly how we are made, both body and soul, so we do not need to parade our bodies in His house - RIGHT? 2. Prepare for your generous offering to God, and bring your name tag, so that your priests and fellow parishioners will know you and greet you by name. 3. Have breakfast, if attending later Masses, with an eye to the Eucharistic fast of one hour Usually by the time we drive, participate at Mass, one hour is surely accounted for. 4. Be on time. You would not dream to be late going to a movie, opera, concert, sporting event, or even a private dinner invitation. You young mothers and fathers have children that you feed, dress them up, make sure you sent them to the bathroom before your departure for church, and then nice and happy you are ready to start the car, on time, and then a little voice in the back seat pleads, Mom, I need to go potty...argh!! 5. On entering the church, hats off for men, maybe a veil (optional) for ladies. Make the sign of the cross, lightly touching the Holy Water, with a heart sorry for our sins, this greeting will erase our daily venial sins. It is the same effct achieved at the Penitential Rite, or Holy Water sprinkling at the beginning of the Mass. By the way, Holy Communion has the same effect. 6. Genuflect with our dominant knee, or as in the case of us arthritic elderlies, bow to the cross or to the tabernacle. Let s get in to an available pew, kneel or sit and pray, and now is the time to turn off the ring of our cell phones. 7. Respond and sing out loud, following the songs offered by the cantor. Those who sing, pray twice, St. Augustine said. If God has not given some of us a singing, tuned up voice, then let s hum it. 8. The rules to follow at the Mass are: a. Stand at the beginning of the Mass, as the priest enters, through the penitential service, the Gloria and the opening prayer. b. Sit at the beginning of the first reading to the end of the second reading. c. Stand from the Alleluia to the end of the Gospel, during the Creed, and Prayers of the Faithful. d. Sit during the Sermon and Offertory. e. Stand at the Invitation to Prayer - Pray Brothers and Sisters to the end of the Holy, Holy, Holy. f. Kneel for Eucharistic Prayer until the Great Amen. g. Stand from Out Father to Behold, the Lamb of God h. Sit at Communion until the Final Prayer. i. Stand from the Final Prayer until the end. 9. Be orderly in going to Holy Communion. Answer Amen with a bow to the priest saying, The Body of Christ and likewise to the deacon, The Blood of Christ. Here in St. Martha, Communion with the Body and Blood of Christ is offered on Sundays at the 9:00 a.m. Mass. It is your choice to receive Jesus body on the mouth or reverently in your cupped hand, sustained by the other hand. Once receiving the Sacred Body, step aside and immediately consume it, then go back and sit in the pew. 10. Pray and reflect after receiving Holy Communion. It is often perplexing to witness people receiving Holy Communion and bolting to the side doors (the main church door cannot be used as the Communion ministers are distributing Jesus). We do not know why people cannot pay due homage to Jesus inside their bodies, so we obviously cannot judge such conduct, only God is the judge. Church traditions invite us to come back to our pew, sit and dialogue with Jesus, leaving the church after the presider is out of the door. I hope that, following our traditions, we give due respect and love to God, and good example to our neighbors.
