2 NOVEMBER 13, 2016 From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, The last two Sundays of Ordinary Time deal with the end of our time here on earth, either through our own death or through the second coming of Jesus. This Sunday s Gospel is teaching all Christians not to let our guard down. The devil has a way to dull our spiritual alertness. So be awake when God calls us repeatedly to His friendship, and then we will not die in our sins totally unaware of Jesus call, and the doors of paradise will remain closed to us! Let us have the foresight to fight the devil s serenade that makes us asleep to God s call. The victorious arms of our battle against Satan are ours by asking God through prayer, rosary, Holy Communion, alms-giving, confession, mercy and forgiveness. Let us not allow greed, pride, hatred and racism to dull our souls! Naturally, we use the time to pray everyday, to read the Bible, to go to Church Services, but we do have much more time on our hands that goes unclaimed for God, and sometimes just plainly wasted, not because of ill will, but mainly because of poor planning, or tiredness, or lack of opportunities. It does seem that we Catholics do not give our tithes to God as other denomination members do. Let us pray that we will not merit the reproach that God sent to the Israelites through the Prophet Malachi (Chapter 3): Yet you say How much we return (to God)? Dare a man rob God? Yet you are robbing me! And you say How do we rob you? In tithes and in offerings! You are indeed accursed, for you, the whole nation rob me. Bring the whole tithe and try me in this, says the Lord of Hosts: Shall I not open for you the floodgates of Heaven, to pour down blessings upon you without measure? Our 2016 Catholic Faith Appeal will be coming to an end very soon. I want to thank all you dear parishioners who have helped St. Martha Church achieve 89% of our $343,000 target (as of 10/30/2016). I am asking in these last few weeks that anyone who has not completed their pledge or have not yet contributed, to find it in their heart to write a check, and drop it in the collection basket in the next few weeks. (A few people reading this could write a check for the entire amount!) If everyone made a donation, or increased the amount they have already donated, it would make a big difference. Thank you! Maybe a young man in our parish at this very moment is wondering about becoming a priest. You could make the difference between whether that young man pursues that call, or pushes it aside, thinking that perhaps he isn t qualified, that it would be too embarrassing to ask, or that it s too difficult to figure out how to find out more information. If you, or someone you know would be interested in becoming a diocesan priest, contact Mary Montedonico, Diocese of Venice, at Next Sunday, November 20, we will ask you to support the annual Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). For over 40 years, CCHD has PSALTER WEEK I been dedicated to defending human dignity and taking poverty off the map. While CCHD s impact on neighborhoods nationwide is long-term and positive, we need your help to continue to meet the needs of the over 46 million Americans who are struggling to escape poverty. Please help us take poverty off the map by supporting the collection for CCHD, and you will be rewarded in Paradise. The Catholic Dogma of Purgatory sometimes leaves us struggling for an understanding, and for reconciling God s mercy and justice. The way I explain it to the children is about a mother who commands sternly to her children not to play baseball in the backyard because they can break a window pane. When a disobedient kid breaks the glass, the furious mom sends the kid to his room without dinner and, from then on, without his weekly allowance, unless the kid does some special job in the house and makes enough money to pay the damage done earlier. God will forgive us our sins in the confessional, readmit us to His Holy Supper, but we still have to make amends for our damages either in this life (alms, prayers - especially the Holy Mass - sacrifices, acceptance of illnesses and fortune reversal, or in the next one in Purgatory). Following Vatican II, Pope Paul VI said: The truth has been divinely revealed that sins are followed by punishments - sins must be expiated - through sorrows and trials of this life - otherwise in the next life of purgatory. Let us then pray for the Poor Souls in Purgatory, because when they reach Heaven with our help, they will intercede with God on our behalf. One of the best ways to help them and, at the same time, help our souls, is to acquire holy indulgences, especially when it is a plenary indulgence, which totally cancels the purgatory time all together. One of the most popular plenary indulgences is the consecration of the Human Race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This is recited after Holy Communion at the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, which is next Sunday, November 20. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry Deacons Bill, Patrick, & Kevin Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence Sisters Cathy & Marianne St. Martha Service Club The St. Martha Service Club is asking for the following items to make Blessing Bags for the clients of Resurrection House. The Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy will continue for one more week until its solemn conclusion in Rome by Pope Francis on November 20, the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. As the Jubilee draws to a close, may the concluding part of the Holy Year's official prayer be an inspiration for all the faithful to continue experiencing the profound and loving mercy of God, and to share that mercy with all men and women throughout the world. Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee Year of Mercy Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. Prayer for the Poor Souls God, Creator and Redeemer of all the faithful, have mercy on the souls that yearn so ardently to enter into Your joy forever. Hasten please, the day of their deliverance, that they may reach heaven and rejoice in Your presence with Your angels and saints forever and ever. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. In particular the Gospel from Luke that quotes Jesus about what we might expect if we truly strive to be His disciples and good stewards of His Word. Jesus says, they will seize and persecute you; they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons, and they will have you led before kings and governors because of my name. That all sounds grand and dramatic, but the truth is that Jesus is warning us of something far more subtle. If we truly strive and try to be the Lord s disciples, we may well be persecuted not only by secular forces, but also by religious forces. The Lord s point is that we must be prepared to endure and be patient. The Gospel closes with Jesus saying, By your perseverance you will secure your lives. The whole idea of endurance and patience is a common theme for Jesus (and for St. Paul in his many letters as well). In the Gospel the original Greek word that we translate into perseverance is hupomone. The meaning of this word is not passive, not a patient waiting so to speak. We endure because of the promises of Christ. It is these promises that give us the strength and hope to practice stewardship, to be good stewards. St. Teresa of Calcutta said, Without patience we will learn less in life. We will feel less. We will hear less. Ironically, rush and more usually mean less. Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc.
