2 OCTOBER 7, 2018 PSALTER WEEK III From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, One of the most troubling topics for us Catholics is the command of Jesus to be one with one s spouse Until Death Do Us Part, as the exchange of marital vows so well expresses it. It is naturally admitted by all that we, human beings, make mistakes constantly, and in every sphere of human activity, which includes marriage. In the Old Testament, there was the conclusion that marriage creates a kinship which was compared to blood ties. So the spouse was equal to a son or daughter and, naturally, once a mother has a baby, she will be indissolubly one with that baby until she dies that is the meaning of the Flesh of my Flesh (until death do us part) in Genesis 2:2-3. In the New Testament, there is consequently the prohibition to divorce but with one exception: an indecent thing (Hebrew Erwat Dabar), which does not appear in Mark s or Luke s Gospel, but it is present in the Gospel of Matthew 19:9 (in Greek Me Epi Porneia = except for immorality). The biblical scholars maintained that the original saying of Jesus did not include the exception, and that it was cast from the male-centered Jewish world of the time and that Jesus separates Himself from the Old Testament, prohibiting serial monogamy (divorce followed by remarriage), and also forbidding remarriage even for a legally repudiated wife, and teaching instead that spouse s infidelity is adultery. Rivers of ink have been written about Porneia through the centuries, but all of us admit that Jesus disciples were instructed to discard the Old Testament concession of legal divorce and to not tolerate divorce at all. The exception in Matthew parallels another biblical exception in Paul s first letter to the Corinthians (1 Cor: 7), where Paul clearly repeats Jesus command, but he adds a special concession ( to the rest I say, not the Lord ). And so, from the apostolic time, we have the message of the indissolubility of marriage, but with some kind of exception granted under the extraordinary power given by Jesus to Peter: Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven. And this power explains the Catholic annulment laws, which are founded on a different principle than the civil annulment. Throughout the first millennium the Church has applied the exception from Jesus ideal marriage in different ways. The immorality clause was originally applied to adultery alone, extending only by degrees to other offenses against marriage (abuse, abandonment either voluntary or by seizure by enemy troops or pirates, life-threatening physical abuse, etc.). But this dissolution of marriage did not mean permission to remarry in all cases and was sometimes reduced only to separation of bed and board. But especially in Eastern Christianity, remarriage, in many cases, was allowed as the lesser of two evils, according to the Biblical principle: It is better to be married than to be on fire (1Cor 7: 9). In the Western Christianity (Roman, Ambrosian, Gallican and Mozarabic Rites), there were many exceptions made, but in case by case (and place by place) situations; for instance, like allowing a spouse to remarry after a certain period of years, or instance when the partner was brought into slavery by raiding Muslim Pirates and did not return for 5 years. In the beginning of the second millennium of the Church, we saw the clear and final recognition by churchmen and church lawyers (canonists) of the competence of the Church to legislate on all seven sacraments. The centuries before 1494 were strongly marked by legalistic interests to create an orderly and unified society from the myriads of little fiefdoms and endless laws. In the civil society, it was marked by the great European kingdoms, and in the church by the monarchical papacy. Until the second millennium, marriage was blessed, but it was considered more or less a private concern of the two spouses in which they were of course subjected only to biblical laws. But thereafter, Churches (and kingdoms also) assumed full jurisdiction of marriages, helped by the new Thomistic Theology, and by the new Canon Law. Marriage was declared indissoluble by God s will, with very few exceptions that varied throughout the centuries and the rites. Church Marriage annulments (sacramental dissolution) mean that certain elements in the sacrament were missing (fraud or mental and physical incompetence, for example), and the Church uses God s power, through the bishops, to dissolve marriages if the marriage was not consummated, or if the consent was invalid because of truly serious grounds, like mental incapacity. The canonical annulment is a human process which requires proof and witnesses of these serious grounds for dissolution, and in very rare cases this is not possible, in which case Mother Church allows the conscience annulment given in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This is naturally a rare exception, whenever the canonical annulment cannot be undertaken. In doubt, call the Bishop s tribunal. Just be aware that our present Pope has recently simplified the Church annulment process because of mercy and compassion. How time flies! We are already in the month of October, which is particularly dear to our Catholic hearts for two reasons: first, because it is the Month of the Rosary, the loving chain of angelic salutations which binds us to Jesus life and to His and our Blessed Mother; Second, because it is the Month of Life, when we celebrate Life and we decide to fight anything that threatens human life: racism, abuse, abortion, discrimination, murder, pornography, exploitation, euthanasia, capital punishment, slavery, war, injustice, and so forth. If we, the followers of the Creator of Life, if we, the heirs of eternal life, if we who uphold God s commandments, do not fight for life, who will? Not the abortionists with their abortuaries, not the various Kevorkians with the killing of the sick and elderly (as Hitler did), nor the dictators of this earth with their madness, nor the criminals who roam the streets of our cities raping and killing innocent people if not us, who then? Through the grace and forgiveness of God, today, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, I celebrate my 83rd birthday and I am in my 28th year as pastor. Some mornings ago, I heard a TV commercial claiming

3 RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY that the average U.S.A. retiree lives 18 years after retiring at the age of 65. My guardian angel, I guess smilingly, reminds me today that I have reached this average milestone and, from now on, I am living on borrowed time. Following in the footsteps of Fr. Rourke (who built the organ) and Fr. Carosella (who built the fabulous Elslander Center) with the suggestions of the parish and finance councils, I tried to expand the religious and prayer lives of you dear parishioners and so together we completed 5 goals: 1. With the help of Indian, Polish, Italian and U.S. Pallottine brothers and priests, along with other religious and diocesan priests and deacons, countless lay ministers and dedicated staff, we added a noon Mass, daily confessions, a Vietnamese Mass, two Spanish Masses and a Tridentine Latin Mass with relative ministries. From these beginnings two parishes were created: St. Jude with the Spanish Center (2006) and Christ the King (2009). 2. Besides the maintenance of such a beautiful church and cloister, we added a new roof, new floor, new pews and a new marble altar platform. The hall and rectory were strengthened with security as a priority. Keeping in mind the fundraising efforts of the Circus people in the building of the present church (1940) Bishop Nevins declared our church as the USA Circus Church (1997) and is the hub of the Circus and Traveling Show ministries. Also, with assistance from the federal government, Casa Santa Marta II was built in 1995 to assist the indigent poor. 3. Our school was going to cease teaching in , but you parishioners generously participated in the campaign to build Bishop Nevins Academy to embrace the new St. Martha School, Dreams Are Free (first opened in 2001 at the Parish Center) and a Circus related school, but 9/11 almost put an end to such plan. The first two schools were built at a great cost, but the Jr. Sailor School was never built. Bishop Nevins Academy was opened in God sent two generous families to us, Ann and Kevin Crowley and Louis Zazarino who paid the bulk of the new Zazarino Center with a large stage, big gym, more classrooms and the Crowley Meditation Garden (2015). 5. In his love and mercy, God moved the hearts of many benefactors and parishioners to obtain from City Hall a renewed and legal recognition of Bethesda House, the only day-time, drop-in center for people affected with HIV/AIDS between Tampa and Naples (2017; opened in 1990). Legal recognition was also granted to the ministry that offers emergency assistance to the poor, with a modern building: Herrig Caritas, in gratitude of Steve and Natalee Herrig who fully paid for the building. And so, dear parishioners, influenced by God s love, you did it all! May God reward you all. I have to confess that only Jesus mercy sustained me in these challenging 27 years, although not worthy, as a sinner, of His benevolence! I guess I should say with old Simeon: You may let your servant go in peace (Lk 2:25). Until then, or until my superiors decide otherwise, I will continue to serve you in love, my dear friends of St. Martha. Today is Caritas Sunday. The volunteers will be outside asking for your assistance. We have the homeless and less fortunate in our midst in Sarasota, and we must remember Pope Francis saying: In whom do you have a difficult time recognizing the face of Christ? Be as generous as you can be. Thank you. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr.
