2 SEPTEMBER 25, 2016 From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Last Sunday s theme was the sharing of our wealth with the poor and the needy as one of the signs of the true disciple of Jesus, who is now presenting a parable that must have been very popular in the Pharisaic circles of Jesus time. The rich guy feasted splendidly but did not share anything with the beggar, Lazarus, who was very visible to him in his wretched condition. After death, the selfish rich one is consumed in the fire of Hell, the poor Lazarus goes to Heaven, and Jesus gives us now the first teaching: use God-given goods to help others. The second teaching is implied here, that the suffering and inequalities of this life of ours are infinitely made up for by God in paradise. The third teaching, and a frightening one at that, is we have only this life to do good; after death there is no more changing the final judgment of God...eternal life or eternal death! The fourth teaching is the importance of faith; in Hebrew parlance, the term Moses and the Prophets is what we call the Bible, the Revelation of God to us. So Jesus says that if we obstinately do not believe God is revealing His will to us in the Bible, then no miracle can change our stony hearts! So much food for thought and change of heart! Let us do good now that we are alive, because at the time we least expect, the Lord is going to judge us. As the ancient monks used to say: Dum Tempus Habemus, Operemur Bonum, which means, Let us do good while we have time. Especially for us senior citizens, time is running short; if we have not done good so far, let us repent and do it now. Last Sunday we started our Religious Education program. Patty Sileo and all the catechists were at the 9:00 a.m. Family Mass in the Parish Hall. It was a wonderful turnout of all the parents and children together before classes, and we hope this strong family attendance at Mass continues all year. Jesus said, bring the little children to me!! Please remember that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It began in 1981, with the first Day of Unity. The intent was to connect battered women s advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. For more information, go their website: Next Sunday is Caritas Sunday, when the members of Caritas (all volunteers) seek your donations at the doors of the church to help them continue to assist the needy of our area. Last month you generous parishioners donated $3,758 at our church doors. During these difficult economic times there are more and more people in our area looking for assistance. Please be as generous as you can to help the poor. October is the Month of the Rosary and next Sunday is Respect Life Sunday. Accordingly, the following activities will take place: The Respect Life Collection will take place next weekend, October 1-2, This special collection will support various local organizations that request PSALTER WEEK II needed financial support from the Church. Please read the letter from our Bishop Dewane in this bulletin, and please be as generous as you can to support this important ministry. The 40 Days for Life will start on September 28 and will be completed on November 6, Some leaders say that, with God s help, this effort could mark the beginning of the end of abortion in America. Next weekend, you can sign-up to join the St. Martha group at a peaceful and prayerful vigil at Planned Parenthood in Sarasota on October 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and October 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please join St. Martha s group for one hour on one of those days. The Legion of Mary will gather in the courtyard next Sunday, Respect Life Sunday, at 1:30 p.m., to recite the Rosary to support the effort to stop abortion. These are important events dedicated to saving lives and helping people who face difficult decisions. Please pray, fast and join the groups for this cause. St. Francis of Assisi s feast is on October 4. He died in 1226, after having received the stigmata on September 14, 1224, and is the patron of ecologists, nature s creatures and creation s lover. His statue is in our garden next to the fountain. In my country, there is a tradition to bless the animals on his feast day, and a few years back we started our own special blessing here at St. Martha s. I would love to have the blessing of your pets in our courtyard on next Sunday, October 2, at 1:00 p.m. I am inviting all of you who would love to participate in this blessing to bring your pet...dogs on leashes, turtles, snakes, birds, alligators and cats, in portable airline type cages. Horses, or elephants and the like, outside the courtyard on the grass on the 2nd street side. Maybe if your little children do not have any pets, but just stuffed animals, let them bring their dogs, giraffes, bears, rabbits, and cats, so that they may not feel cut off from the Church blessing. A word to the dog owners please let your dogs circle the trees OUTSIDE our courtyard. Thank you! Today our St. Martha Rosary Makers are in the courtyard to donate a rosary to all of you! They are already blessed - so start praying! Please bring your new rosary to the Planned Parenthood facility, and pray for an end to abortion! If you can t walk, pray the rosary at home or at Church. Also, today in the courtyard, the Knights of Columbus is having their membership drive. The Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic fraternal organization and continues to grow each day. If you are looking to become active in your community and continue to support your Church in many other ways, consider joining the Knights of Columbus. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry Deacons Bill, Patrick, & Kevin Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence Sisters Cathy & Marianne Prayer Line:

3 26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A Message from our Bishop Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Catholic Church remains at the forefront in speaking out on the issue of the sanctity of life, from conception to natural death, regardless of age or condition. During this Year of Mercy, the words of Pope Francis remind us that, We are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us. In thanksgiving for the mercy shown to us throughout this Year of Mercy, let us do what we can to help others and to promote a greater respect for all human life. Each year on Respect Life Sunday, the first weekend in October, parishes throughout the Diocese of Venice conduct a special second collection to enhance the life-affirming work of the Diocesan Respect Life Office. The funds remain in the Diocese of Venice and facilitate our witness as a faith community in southwest Florida. Please continue to pray for a greater respect for all human life at all stages of life. Further, please be as generous as you can in supporting this annual collection so that this outreach can be expanded. Thank you! To explore ways to use not only your treasure but your time and talent as well to support life, contact your Parish or the Diocesan Respect Life Office at May God bless you with a deep appreciation for the gift of life and the courage to defend the sanctity of life. Let us remain united in prayer. Sincerely yours in Christ, + Bishop Frank J. Dewane Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida MY CHOICE PREGNANCY CENTER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! He devoted his life to acts of charity, organizing groups to provide food and clothing for all who were poor: orphans, prostitutes, the sick, the disabled and the homeless. He founded the Congregation of the Missions (Vincentians) to preach and train clergy, and, with St. Louise de Marillac, he co-founded the Daughters of Charity. Canonized in 1737, he is a patron of charitable societies. May we learn from him that those who are resolved to depend utterly on God shall never be poor. 4 BULLETIN The rich man in the Gospel today was condemned for not treating Lazarus as his brother. But Jesus said, "Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, you do to Me." Do we not believe that if we leave the sick untended, that we are leaving Christ untended? Must we not then also believe that whenever a child in the womb is destroyed and then discarded, that not also Christ being so treated? It is Christ in the womb. When we stand up for life, we stand up for Him. Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. Fr. Fausto Parish Hall The St. Martha Hospitality Ministry invites you to join us for an Oktoberfest Bar-B-Que! It will be a fun filled evening with food, beer, wine and music by the Rollback band. Tickets are $25 per person and are available in the Parish Office. Year of Mercy Dec. 8, Nov. 20, 2016 The evil one is clever, and deludes us into thinking that with our human justice we can save ourselves and save the world! In reality, only the justice of God can save us! And the justice of God is revealed in the Cross: the Cross is the judgement of God on us all and on this world. But how does God judge us? By giving his life for us! Here is the supreme act of justice that defeated the prince of this world once and for all; and this supreme act of justice is the supreme act of mercy. Jesus calls us all to follow this path: Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful (Lk 6:36). I now ask of you one thing. In silence, let's all think... everyone think of a person with whom we are annoyed, with whom we are angry, someone we do not like. Let us think of that person and in silence, at this moment, let us pray for this person and let us become merciful with this person." Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. In fact, his comments are often direct and to the point. The excerpt from Paul s First Letter to Timothy, our Second Reading for today, contains one of those passages, which though brief, is the formula for seeking holiness and living lives of stewardship. Paul says to Timothy, and thus to us, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Compete well for the faith. Of course, we are aware that in spite of its simplicity, that is a group of instructions that can be very difficult to really live out. Yet, that is exactly our calling. It all begins with pursuing righteousness. We tend to think of the meaning of that as being goodness, as in pursuing being a good person, but its real roots are deeper than that. Based upon the original Greek a more accurate translation might be pursuing justice. More accurately the translation would be pursuing justice as Jesus defines it. That is really our charge to seek lives of stewardship and discipleship in response to the Lord s call to us. The Greek philosopher Socrates said, All men s souls may be immortal, but the souls of the righteous are immortal and divine. Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc.
