2 DECEMBER 31, 2017 PSALTER WEEK III From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Today we Catholics celebrate the Holy Family of Nazareth: Joseph, Mary and Jesus, the nuclear family of 2000 years ago. The reason for this celebration is to remind us that we Catholics must re-create in our own family the atmosphere and virtues of the family of the poor carpenter of Nazareth. Today s Gospel introduces first the ceremonial and legal impurity caused by the blood of childbirth. Our Jewish ancestors believed that a woman s vitality, believed to be present in the blood, was diminished with childbirth, separating her from Her wholesome body created by God, and so she needed to reacquire God s blessing on her, after a period of days ( for a baby boy, for a baby girl...go figure!) And so a young mother had to atone for her loss, offering a holocaust either of a lamb, or, if the family was poor, of a bird (Lv 12: 1-8). And also, any first born was consecrated to God, and had to be redeemed or bought back from God. (Ex 13: 1-6). And, when they were in the temple, the Holy Family met two extraordinary pious people, both very devoted worshippers of God. Simeon, probably a member of the temple priesthood, years before, received an inspired message from God, who revealed that he would not die without seeing the Messiah. Years passed, and one day the Spirit of God propelled him to meet Mary and Joseph, and Mary put into his extended arms the baby Jesus, as the fulfillment of God s personal prophecy to Simeon. The inspired song then echoed on Simeon s lips: Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples (Lk 2: 29-32). A song that we should make our own especially when our health is forecasting our imminent death and going home to Paradise. The song is also prayed every evening by those who pray the Breviary. Two prophecies are included: the rejection of Jesus by many co-religionaries, and the sorrows and pains to be suffered by Mary in such rejection and in Jesus passion and death. The second extraordinary person is Anna, intimately immersed in God, who received the consoling message by God to approach the baby, the future messiah. I cannot imagine what influence these two prophets had on the parents of Jesus! They were immersed in Joy! So, today, let the families of St. Martha, embrace one another, again binding us in the divine bond of tender love and respect, following the example of this Family of Nazareth, accepting the sword of failure and the sharing of love, patience and, above all, sincere forgiveness. Monday, January 1, 2018, is the feast of the Solemnity of Mary. Since it falls on a Monday, it is NOT a holy day of obligation. Masses times will follow the weekday schedule: 7:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., Noon, and 5:30 p.m. In this Solemnity Mass, the Gospel makes us consider the actions of St. Joseph who, although aware of the exalted position of Mary in the plan of salvation, still takes matters in his own hands. He brings Jesus to be circumcised, according to God s command to Abraham; and, following the angel s warning, saves Jesus life by fleeing to Egypt. Any Dad would have done the same, I presume. And notice that we do not hear any objections from Mary...in all humility, she follows Joseph without bickering or opposition. May all of our parish families imitate the family of Nazareth! Today, all of us: spouses, parents or grandparents, children and siblings should make a firm commitment to create a more united bond of love within our families. Next Sunday is Caritas Sunday when the Caritas volunteers will be at the doors of the Church asking for your donations to help the needy in our downtown area. Last month you generous parishioners contributed $4,965. Thank you for your generosity. On behalf of our clergy, ministers & staff: HAPPY AND JOYFUL New Year! With our hearts full of gratitude for your generosity and devotion to Jesus, I pray that God grant good health, success, inner peace to all of you, Dear Parishioners! Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Jan, John & Jerry Deacons Bill and Patrick; plus Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence and Sisters Cathy & Marianne Congratulations to the St. Martha School students, Lana & Ana whose artwork will be featured in the Sarasota County 2018 NEST Calendar, which supports the county's goal of environmental stewardship. 4 BULLETIN "Strong families are an integral aspect of the Culture of Life. It is precisely the breakdown of family structure that increases the temptation to abort, or to resort to euthanasia or a lack of proper care for the elderly. On the other hand, the communion of persons that comes from giving oneself to the other in selfless love is what creates the proper context for saying a generous "yes" to life. The word "family" can stand for "Forget About Me; I Love You." SHOP & SUPPORT ST.
