2 APRIL 1, 2018 PSALTER WEEK I From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Holy and Happy Easter to all of you, St. Martha parishioners and visitors! When on that fateful Friday, a little, sad funeral was hastily bringing Jesus lifeless body to be buried in a brand new tomb donated by a friend of the Master, everything seemed lost and pointless! The Romans, oppressors of the Jewish Nation, had crucified Jesus. The Great Healer, who could raise the dead, was Himself a pierced, lifeless, dead body! The intoxication of the triumphant entrance into Jerusalem had faded into an unbroken despair! All the dreams of a glorious restoration of a Jewish Kingdom were now seen just as a bad joke: We were hoping that He would be the one to redeem Israel (Luke 24:21). All the talk of being the Son of God and to rise from the dead (Mark 9:9-10) was now seen as the manic expressions of a kind and gentle, but selfdeluded, mentally deranged healer. Nobody on that early Sunday morning took Jesus resurrection seriously! The disciples were locked in their upper-room, waiting for the fateful knock on the door by the Temple guards, waiting to be arrested, or worse, for following Jesus. The women were just wondering who was going to roll the tombstone. If they would have believed in Jesus resurrection, they would not have gone to the tomb! Of all the people standing at the foot of the cross only one did not go to the tomb: Mary, the Mother of Jesus! Mary of Magdala was the leader of the women who went to cry over Jesus body. But when the women went to the tomb, they found an empty tomb. Mary of Magdala ran up to the cenacle, the upper room of the Last Supper, and told Simon Peter: They have taken the Lord from the tomb and we don t know where they put Him. Meanwhile, the other ladies were the object of an angelic vision which stunned them into speechless silence. Peter, John and Magdalene went to the tomb, and young John was puzzled not only by the fact of the empty tomb itself, but by the fact that the burial shroud was there, but rolled up on one side and the Sudariurn (face cloth) was rolled up in another place. Immediately, John realized that the body was not stolen, but that the Lord was risen. Then, leaving Magdalene kneeling down in tears facing the black opening of the empty tomb, Peter and John left and they went back to the cenacle, where the news of the empty tomb had brought so much sadness; because the other disciples realized that Jesus enemies did not even want to let His body rest in peace. Then Jesus, alive and well, appeared to Mary Magdalene! And the few passers-by of the still deserted streets of Jerusalem saw a young woman running and screaming like crazy: He s alive, He s risen! And then... Shalom (Peace to You)... they turned and just inside the locked door, unmistakably alive, smiling and radiant, was Jesus. He did rise as He promised! Today we, Jesus followers, share the inexpressible joy of the early disciples in recognizing the incredible, impossible, mind-boggling reality of Jesus Resurrection, which makes us certain of our own resurrection and eternal life in Paradise, forever and ever! So, my dear friends, let us follow Jesus in accepting to carry our crosses, in facing our sufferings and death, in looking at our tomb as a door to heaven, all knowing well that we, the Christians, will have a second, glorious, endless life with our Savior, Jesus. Next Sunday, April 8, is Divine Mercy Sunday. The Pope established plenary indulgences on Divine Mercy Sunday. The plenary indulgence is granted under the usual conditions of confession, Eucharist and prayer for the intentions of the Pope. On Divine Mercy Sunday, which is the first Sunday after Easter, the faithful have to recite the Our Father, the Creed and any devout prayer such as, Merciful Jesus, I trust in you! St. Martha will have a Divine Mercy Holy Hour, including a Mass, in the Church on April 8 at 2:30 p.m. All are invited to this special event. Bishop Frank J. Dewane invites all to join him at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, April 15, at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice for Yom Hashoah, the annual celebration of unity between Catholic and Jewish faiths. The Yom Hashoah Service brings together members of the Jewish and Christian communities, as encouraged by the popes, to remember the victims of hate crimes, and to help build a climate of respect so that such tragedies may never again be possible. The special guest this year is Bishop James Massa, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn About our ancestors in faith, the Israelites (now we commonly refer to them with the noun Jews ), let us be clear about the church teaching. The majority of the Sanhedrin condemned Jesus as a blasphemer because: You, who are only a man, have made yourself God, and they thought sincerely that they were in line with the First Commandment. Jesus tried again and again to convince the leaders of the Sanhedrin of His Divinity: If you do not believe my word, believe in me because of the miracles I make search the Scriptures and you ll find out all about me Jesus was not believed by most members of the Sanhedrin who passed on to him the death penalty, an empty threat because only the Roman Army occupying Judea could condemn anyone to death. It was Pilate, the Roman Procurator of Judea who, even when he recognized the absurdity (in his pagan mind) of the Sanhedrin decision, condemned Jesus to death. In a politically correct sentence dictated by the scorn and hatred he felt for the chosen people of God, he condemned Jesus to death. A Roman Centurion, an officer in charge of one hundred soldiers, executed the sentence of death. Delayed a week because of Easter, next Sunday is Caritas Sunday. The first Sunday of each month the Caritas volunteers are outside after each Mass to ask for your donations to help the needy in our community. Please be as generous as possible. Thank you. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Jan, John & Jerry Deacons Bill & Patrick; and Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence & Sister Cathy

5 Jesus left us his mother to be our mother. -Pope Francis POPE FRANCIS PRAYER INTENTIONS APRIL 2018 That economists may have the courage to reject any economy of exclusion and know how to open new paths. DEADLINE is April 6, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. Apply at FROM THE OFFICE OF OUR BISHOP: Christ is Risen! Alleluia! Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It is with great joy that we sing Alleluia! Jesus Christ has indeed Risen. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the source of Christian hope. By His action, Christ conquers sin and death and unlocks for the Faithful the path to life eternal. This is a message that resonates with the deepest aspirations of the human heart. From the earliest times to the present, it is hope that has inspired so many Christians to endure suffering and even martyrdom due to religious persecution. Profound belief in the Resurrection is the very cause of persecution while at the same time the strength in the face of persecution for many Christians. This is especially true in the lands where Our Lord and Savior walked. Let us pray in joyful hope for peace throughout the world and that everyone can fully celebrate Easter. May the hope and the joy of the Risen Christ be with you and your family throughout this Easter Season! God Bless You! Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
