Luke 4:18a LIVING AS THE BODY OF CHRIST Some of Saint Paul s best known and most beloved imagery is contained in the passages from First Corinthians that we have heard last week and this week: the many gifts granted by the one same Spirit and the many members making up the one Body of Christ. Few passages from sacred scripture more accurately sum up how Christian vocations work together. Unlike some of Paul s other writings, which are a product of the social and religious conventions of his time, these enable us to look at our own lives and the lives of those around us to discern what gifts, what vocations the Holy Spirit has given for the good of all. 4 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 OUR CATHOLIC SCHOOL It is right and fitting that we celebrate Catholic Schools week in our parish. Catholic schools have made a great difference to the quality of life and education all around the world. Mrs. Butto was educated by the Presentation Sisters in Pakistan. President Obama went to a Catholic school while he was in Indonesia. I went to a a public grade school and I went to a boarding school run by the Capuchin Fathers for High School. My father died before by senior year and the Capuchin Fathers told my mother to send me back and not to worry about the seventy pounds fee. Not long after I arrived in Sacramento, I became Chaplin and Teacher at Christian Brothers High School. The Christian Brothers have had a great ministry all around the world. For over one hundred and fifty year they went door to door in Sacramento inviting young men to come to C.B.S. They invited those who could not afford it and especially the young students who had lost a parent. They were joined in our diocese by the Dominican, Franciscan, Loreto, Mercy, Jesuit and many other religious orders, to educate our young men and women. God has Blessed their work and all of us. When I started teaching in 1976 there were seventeen Christian Brothers in our community. Now, there are none. The Brothers prepared for this day. They shared with their Lay Teachers and parents the LeSallian life and philosophy and so their legacy continues. We wish we had more religious but the good work they begun continues through their inspiration in those they loved and taught. When we had many Sisters, Brothers and Priests, Catholic education costs and fees were kept low. Today, Catholic school teachers and staff make great sacrifices in their roles as Catholic educators. Catholic parishes and the laity are making magnificent efforts to continue this special ministry of allowing the children to come to Christ. In our parish over the last two years we received large donations from Maripaul Baier, Howard & June Clunn and Paul & Nancy Batnale. These donations along with school fees, scrip and other fundraisers have enabled us to Bless and educate our young people. This Sunday we will begin our Catholic Schools week in the classroom of Christ at the Mass. To our students (past/present), Gob Bless You. To all who help Catholic education, God Bless You. Lucas 4:18a LA VIDA DEL CUERPO DE CRISTO Algunas de las imágenes más conocidas y queridas de san Pablo se encuentran en los pasajes de la primera carta a los corintios que hemos escuchado la semana pasada y hoy: los muchos dones de un mismo Espíritu y los muchos miembros que componen el Cuerpo de Cristo. Pocos pasajes de la Sagrada Escritura resumen con mayor claridad cómo las vocaciones cristianas trabajan en colaboración. A diferencia de otros escritos de san Pablo, producto de las convenciones sociales y religiosas de su época, estos nos permiten mirar nuestra propia vida y la vida de los que están a nuestro alrededor para discernir los dones, la vocación que el Espíritu Santo nos ha dado para el bien de todos. VINCENT de PAUL St. Vincent de Paul is a ministry within St. Teresa s that provides valuable service to parishioners, as well as services to the poor in our community. We have provided assistance with housing, rent, utilities and transportation to hundreds of people in need. With our stated goal of helping others to help themselves, many of our clients have been able to better themselves.....getting off the streets, becoming employed, reuniting with families, or stabilizing their housing situation. We have approximately 25 active members from our parish who volunteer their time and energy for this worthy cause. Since we have no overhead, every dollar contributed reaches our clients. In an effort to tidy up the church vestibules, we have installed a clothing drop bin. It is conveniently located near the playground. You can drive right up to it and drop your clothing in. A special thanks goes out to Tom Goetz for his work getting the concrete slab poured and restoring the bin for our use.
