Dear Friends, LIVING OUR FAITH This Sunday is Respect Life Sunday.

Our civilization cannot hide from the atrocities of millions of deaths that are allowed to occur each year because of laws which allow the direct taking of human life.

Human life may be the result of an irresponsible human act, but it is never an accident. It is an act that requires a cooperative venture between God and humans.

2 Dear Friends, LIVING OUR FAITH This Sunday is Respect Life Sunday. We ask you to pray for all those whose lives have been compromised or lost through abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment, lack of basic health care, and neglect. Our civilization cannot hide from the atrocities of millions of deaths that are allowed to occur each year because of laws which allow the direct taking of human life. Though we may not be directly responsible, we cannot enjoy the luxuries of our society without taking some responsibility for its sins against humanity. There are things that we can do. Human life may be the result of an irresponsible human act, but it is never an accident. It is an act that requires a cooperative venture between God and humans. From beginning to end, life is a gift and a sacred encounter with God to be treasured in all of its aspects. To do otherwise is to violate the divine law by sin. The most God-like capacity we have as humans is our ability to love and the most important law is to love our neighbor as we love our creator God and ourselves. Therefore, human life at all stages is a sacred trust to be loved, nurtured and valued as the central focus of our life, personal and civil. All humanity from conception to death has a natural right to exist with basic care and protections. Our democratic way of life documents this as self-evident. As a people who long for justice, our cry of frustration should match what we hear in the first reading today: How long, O LORD? I cry for help but you do not listen! I cry out to you, Violence! but you do not intervene. Why hasn t God heard our cry for the vulnerable? The mystery of God s time is not ours to understand or manipulate. Our job is to spread the good news of God s love, the mandate to protect and revere human life, and to pray for a solution to all social injustices and disregard for life. St. Paul reminds us, Take as your norm the sound words that you receive from me (the church and its teachings) in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard this rich trust with the help of the Holy Spirit. St. Luke reminds us that we are faithful servants who have been given a responsibility to work for justice and to pray for an end to moral and social evils. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do. I thank all of you who work and pray so hard for a more just and compassionate society. By your active participation in community efforts and in giving witness by their protests and prayer vigils you proclaim the Gospel and you remind us all that Life is God-given and Sacred. ASK FATHER FRED Question: When is the right time to receive the Sacrament of healing and who should receive it? (continued from last week) Answer: The catechism says, As soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. (ccc 1514) The Rite of Anointing also encourages us to receive the Anointing when as old people we are in a weak condition even though no dangerous illness is present. (Rite 11-13) Through the Sacrament, the Holy Spirit renews us in our faith in God and helps us withstand the temptations of the evil one to be discouraged and despairing in the face of suffering and death. The Catechism for Adults (USCCB) encourages the regular celebration of the Anointing of the Sick, since infirmity and old age constitute legitimate reasons for receiving this Sacrament, a parish can easily provide a setting for a number of parishioners to receive the Sacrament regularly. It can serve the purpose of the Sacrament and, at the same time, build up the faith of the community itself.
