2 APRIL 7, 2019 PSALTER WEEK I From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Today s Gospel passage in some Biblical manuscripts is in the Gospel of Luke, and is totally absent in the most ancient Johannine Manuscript. Biblical scholars suspect that it was a Lucan Episode transplanted to John s Gospel, but anyway it is another powerful example of Jesus mercy. In reality, it was a trap set by the Scribes and Pharisees to discredit Jesus in front of the people or, more wickedly, to accuse him to the Roman authorities. In the Book of Deuteronomy (22:23-24), a woman either engaged or married, who is caught in the act of adultery, must be stoned to death. The Pharisees knew that Jesus was a softhearted and merciful person, so that when they brought this adulteress before Jesus, they were sure to triumph over the Lord. If Jesus had forgiven the woman, then He would have gone against the Mosaic Law and been labeled a blasphemer and a betrayer of the law. And if Jesus had upheld the Mosaic Law and had condemned her to die, the Pharisees would have accused Him of usurping Roman Authority. Pilate was the only one capable of applying capital punishment. In one way or another, Jesus fate was sealed! (Or so they thought!) But the Lord does something extraordinary, and with His finger writes on the dusty ground; this mysterious action, still puzzling today, has the effect of making the Pharisees run away in such a manner that the woman is left alone before Jesus, and surrounded by Jesus friends. Some authors suspect that Jesus began writing down the sins of the accusers, starting with their chief elders only in paradise will we know what Jesus wrote. And then the mercy of God covers the shame and tears of the poor woman: Neither do I condemn you, go in peace, but from now on avoid this sin. Jesus absolves then - and now! One of the traditional Easter duties for all Catholics is the annual Confession and Holy Communion, according to our Church Laws, which I am now quoting for your convenience. Holy Communion can be received twice a day. This is a law given by our late Saint Pope John Paul II. The Eucharist fast, excluding water and medicines, should be observed before Communion by abstaining from any food, or drink, for at least an hour, unless a person is elderly or sick. About the obligation to receive Communion once a year, the law Church Law Canon #916 says: A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive Communion without prior Sacramental Confession, unless grave reason is present in this case, a person is to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible. About the Sacrament of Penance, Canon 960 states: Individual integral Confession and Absolution constitute the only ordinary way by which the faithful person, who is aware of serious sin, is reconciled with God and with the Church. About the obligation of Confession once a year, Church Law Canon 989 says: After having attained the age of discretion, each of the faithful is bound by an obligation faithfully to confess serious sins at least once a year. The obligation of Confession is applicable only in the case of grave sins. Venial sins can be forgiven either by communal or private confession, by receiving Holy Communion, non-sacramental penitential rites (like the one at the beginning of Mass), almsgiving, sacrificial actions, acts of charity, but the best gift we can give our good Lord is our contrite, humble heart, repentant of all our sins. The sacrament of Reconciliation, which we usually call Confession, is the best Lenten gift we can give God. Some Catholics feel uneasy about confession for many reasons, such as: 1. I do not go because I have forgotten the starting formula (Forgive me Father for I have sinned ) or the Act of Contrition. Do we really think that postponing confession for another year will improve our memory? 2. The Act of Contrition should be expressed in our own wording. Can you imagine if, after a fight, the wife will say to the husband: Oh my supreme husband, I am truly sorry to have offended thee, because you are so good and worthy of all sacrifices etc. etc. It sounds so silly, doesn t it? How simple it is to say in confession: My good Jesus, I m sorry, I ll do better from now on! 3. All mortal sins must be confessed! Sometimes we feel ashamed as if our sins are so horrendous, and we re afraid that we will shock the priests! On the contrary, I m afraid that our priestly sins will shock you, every time they are reported in the mass media! Besides being sinners, like everyone else, we priests had two full years of studies in Moral Theology, and there is not a sin that we have not studied in detail or heard before! Some of us have the feeling that our sins are so serious that God cannot forgive them! Nonsense! The mercy of God is infinitely superior to any of our sins! The worst temptation of the devil is to convince us that the Spirit of Love of God cannot forgive, and so we do not ask pardon, and remain separated from God in this, and (God forbid) in the other life! To facilitate your reception of the Sacrament of Penance, we Priests of St. Martha have scheduled 30 hours of individual Confession during Holy Week. Come during these hours, and you will find one of our priests waiting for you in the confessional room, next to the courtyard entrance of the Church. Candlelight Prayer Vigil at Planned Parenthood Saturday, April 13, 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sarasota Planned Parenthood, 736 Central Ave. Join your fellow pro-lifers on April 13 at the Planned Parenthood facility in Sarasota to pray for an end to abortion. Planned Parenthood is the nation s largest abortion provider, performing 36% of all abortions in our nation - over 330,000 each year. This vigil will include prayer and song. It will be one of more than 100 taking place across the country during the Nationwide Pro-Life Candlelight Vigil. It will also serve as the closing ceremony for our Spring 40 Days for Life campaign.
