2 JULY 30, 2017 PSALTER WEEK I From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, In today s Gospel, our present humanity is symbolized in the dragnet thrown into the lake that is collecting all kinds of fish, some edible and some useless. This dragnet is carried by the boat under water and, finally, slowly, sees the light of the sun when the fishermen hauled it ashore, and then proceeded to make the selection of the good fish. The present humanity embraces all of us, good and wicked, and like the fish we are confused by being compressed into a tight squeeze by the net. We, too, are confused by the presence of evil people and unimaginable human tragedies, so that sometimes we cannot discern the hand of God in our every day life. But one day, sooner or later, the angels will bring us to the bright presence of our God who is the Eternal Light, and with whom we will be living forever! Do not let your hearts be troubled then; have Faith in Jesus, the Infinite Love! Many times we receive requests to bring Communion to shut-ins at home or nursing homes. If you have such a request now, or in the future, please contact Pam in the Church Office. As you may know, there are three boxes for the Poor in our church, and two in the Parish Center, dedicated to Caritas. Your donations help the poor and the needy in our area. Please continue your generosity. God will reward you. Next Sunday is Caritas Sunday, when the members of Caritas (all volunteers) seek your donations at the doors of the church to help them to continue to assist the needy of our area. Just walking downtown you can see how many people need our assistance. Caritas is called upon even more now during the summer months when so many parishioners are traveling. Last month we collected the generous amount of $3,558 at the doors of the church from you dear parishioners. Thank you and please be generous once again this month. Saturday, August 5, is the Feast of Our Lady of Snows, more popularly know in Rome as Santa Maria Maggiore. It is the biggest Church in the world dedicated to our Mother in Heaven; one of the four major Basilicas of Rome; the other three being: St. John the Baptist (Rome s Cathedral), St. Peter on the Vatican Hill, and St. Paul outside the walls. According to an old Roman tradition, Pope Liberius ( ) had a dream of the Blessed Mother asking him to build a church in her honor above one of the seven hills of Rome that could be covered by snow that day. When the Pope woke up, because of a terrible summer storm, and he heard that the Esquilin Hill was totally covered by huge hail stones the size of a man s fist, he sequestered the huge building of the Esquilinae Thermae and turned it into a Church. It was rebuilt and dedicated by Pope Sixtus III ( ) a couple of years after the Council of Ephesus (431) in Perpetual Memory of the title Theotokos (Mother of God), given to Mary by the Bishops of the Council. It is a Church very dear to my heart, because in this beautiful Basilica, I was baptized; I was an altar boy and I celebrated my first Holy Mass. We clerics and religious are happy to serve at St. Martha, because you dear parishioners have been very generous in giving your hard-earned money to the Church, the parish School, the AIDS victims, the little poor babies served by Caritas and St. Martha s conference of St. Vincent de Paul! SAINT ALPHONSUS LIGUORI AUGUST 1 Born in Naples, he became a lawyer at age seventeen. After losing an important case by overlooking a piece of evidence, he decided to become a priest and later became a bishop. He founded an order of missionary priests that became the Redemptorists. He was widely sought as a preacher and confessor, and his famous book Moral Theology linked his keen legal mind with his kindness and concern for others. St. Ignatius of Loyola NATIONAL CATHOLIC PLEDGE TO END THE DEATH PENALTY The faithful are invited to join Bishop Frank J. Dewane in signing a national pledge to end the use of the death penalty. The Catholic Mobilizing Network's National Catholic Pledge to End the Death Penalty was announced in Washington, D.C. on May 9, As Chair of the USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, the Bishop was one of the first signatories who have committed to advocate, educate and pray for the end to the use of the death penalty. CURSILLO MINISTRY Cursillo is a worldwide movement which presents a simple way for people to live a fully Christian life. It involves a weekend experience that provides the framework for initiating a closer and fuller life in Christ. I believed that I already had a relationship with the Lord prior to making my weekend in April 2015, but Cursillo has shown me where and how I could deepen that relationship. I study Scripture and other Catholic writings to know Jesus better. I talk to Him every day. And this renewed friendship with Jesus has opened my eyes to serve Him through my community. Denise C. The purpose of this Liturgy is to pray that the Holy Spirit grant special graces and guidance upon those who work in our civil system. This is something that has come about through the request of several legal professions in the District and has developed into a local tradition. PRO-LIFE HELP WANTED Do you have a heart for pro-life, a few extra hours a month, and a computer? St. Martha Parish is looking for two new Respect Life volunteers to coordinate parish activities to promote a greater respect for all human life. You also will be liaisons with other parish groups and with the diocese. You'll get one-on-one help and support from the current Respect Life reps and the diocese. WE ARE THE TREASIRE Jesus presents us with more parables in today s Gospel from St. Matthew. He opens the first one with Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. According to most biblical scholars and theologians who study and draw conclusions on Jesus teachings, in this particular parable, and those which follow, the field is the world. The man who values the treasure is not any of us because we do not have anything with which to purchase this treasure. The Man Who gave all to buy this field was Jesus Himself. And it is with joy that He gives all to buy the field, to save the world and each of us. What makes the treasure so wonderful that the Lord would give all, His very life? Each of us. In other words, each of you! Jesus gave everything to redeem the whole world to preserve a treasure it contains. He gave all because we His people are the treasure. Do we understand that? Do we consider that every time we approach the gift of the Eucharist? We should.
