2 NOVEMBER 4, 2018 PSALTER WEEK III From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, The Gospel today picks up the theme of the first reading and gives us the entire Biblical revelation in a nutshell: Love! Jesus answer is given to another controversy presented by a Scribe, who was concerned about the greatest of the 613 precepts of the Old Testament Law, and who was voicing the common controversy as held by devout Pharisees in Jesus time. In a sense, it does parallel the great XVII Century controversies about the type of mortal and venial sin in the actions of the Catholic faithful. Jesus answer to this sincere Scribe, willing to learn the views of the great miracle-worker, is based on two quotes, one from the Biblical Book of Deuteronomy: The Lord is one, and the other quote, from the Biblical Book of Leviticus: Love Your Neighbor as Yourself. The Scribe, well versed in the Bible, recognized immediately the admirable way that Jesus employed in adding a second place command which Jesus, although He was not asked for it, did volunteer; and note also that Jesus did not attempt to make one command subordinate to the other, and actually Jesus still accepts the gauge of loving neighbor with loving oneself; if we cannot love SELF, then we re unable to love neighbor, and ultimately GOD, because LOVE IS ONE! One of the greatest discoveries of the modern behavioral sciences is the inability of people with low self-esteem, or with destructive self-hatred, to truly engage in loving relationships, as God had already taught us in the Bible. And now we also can fully understand the celebrated praise of love in Chapter 13 of the First Letter to the Corinthians by the apostle Paul, so often employed in the nuptial ceremonies, and the magnificent poem to love in Chapter 4 of the First Letter of John: God is love, and only those who love, live in God and God lives in them. Let us resolve then, my dear friends, to keep loving beyond rejection, to be forgiving beyond hurt, and keep believing beyond evidence. As Jesus told us, let us carry everyday our cross with joy and love! Tuesday, November 6th, is Election Day: VOTE! It is our duty and responsibility in front of God. It is a well worn saying that we Americans vote our pocketbook, but we CATHOLICS should vote our conscience! We will answer God for every useless word as Jesus put it, imagine how much more important is a useless vote that we did not cast. Remember also that every right we enjoy is based on the fact that we are alive. If we are dead we have no right to vote, to get a driving license, to privacy (although our forefathers did not put such a right in the Constitution!), which means that all our rights are based on the right to life. Let us ponder God s words: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose Life, then, that you and your descendants may live (Deut 30:19). Sadly, today we American Catholics are deeply divided, when the U.S. government has assailed our Catholic tenets, we did not come to Jesus defense. Please, please, at least for once in our lifetime, let us put Jesus Number One! This weekend is designated The Florida Catholic subscription weekend. I urge you to subscribe to our diocesan newspaper. For only $26 per year (in state), you will receive 24 issues of the Florida Catholic to your home, and for $20 a year you can receive the e-edition and get all three diocesan editions of the newspaper on your PC or tablet. Subscribe this weekend with the envelope in the pews. Faith-filled reading at a bargain price! Friday, November 9, we celebrate the Dedication of the Cathedral of Rome (begun by Pope Sylvester I on November 9, 324 AD) in honor of the Savior, and then of St. John the Baptist, in the land of the Lateran family, just inside the Aurelian Walls. For more than one thousand years, Popes resided there, moving into the Vatican Basilica of St. Peter in the XIV century. This original Basilica of St. Peter was opened in 330 by Emperor Constantine, enlarged in the 14th century, and again enlarged to become the largest Church in Christendom, with the consecration by Pope Urban VIII on November 18, The Cathedral of Rome is not St. Peter on the Vatican Hill, but St. John in Lateran, which is the mother, and head of all Churches of Rome and Christendom. Please pray for our Pope Francis. On Thanksgiving Day, November 22, the Knights of Columbus #3358 in Sarasota will host their annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner at the Council Hall (4880 Fruitville Rd.) at 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., for the homeless, the homebound, the lonely and anyone else who would like to enjoy a delicious wholesome meal in the company of others on this national holiday. This event is provided at no charge to the less fortunate so if you would like to make a financial donation, please make checks payable to K of C, Council #3358, and send them to the Knights of Columbus, 4880 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, FL Attn: Grand Knight Mike Deering, Feed the Hungry. Today is Caritas Sunday. There will be volunteers at the doors of the Church after each Mass collecting for the poor and the needy. Not all of the snowbirds have returned for the season, please be generous again this month! With pain we associate our prayers to those of our sisters & brothers of Jewish faith, our ancestors in the faith, at this time of sorrow for them and us. It is terrible that we, in these United States, cannot enter in peace and joy into the house of God. Hatred is a terrible sin! May God free our nations of all the hatred. If we do not like what our elected officials do, remember our right to select other citizens to be our new politicians: VOTE on election day! But PRAY before you write your choice; we have to answer God on our judgement day for our choices. May the Holy Spirit of divine love help us in our choices. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Veterans Day Mass is being held Sunday, November 11 at 2:45 p.m., at the Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72/Clark Road, approximately five miles east of I-75.
