2 MY DEAR FRIENDS, MAY 8, 2016 From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... TODAY WE CELEBRATE ASCENSION SUNDAY. I can imagine the lump in the throats of His followers when they saw Jesus levitating from the ground, and slowly ascending higher and higher, getting like a little dot disappearing in a cloud, never to be seen again. The message they received from the angels is still valid today: This Jesus will come back at the final judgment! Let us, HIS followers, say it for the Lord and utter the final sentence of the Bible: Maranatha Come, Lord Jesus, come back! By the way, many Christians believe that Jesus walked, ate, slept, preached and performed miracles for 40 days after His Glorious Resurrection. But an objective reading of the Gospel shows that Jesus kept APPEARING (NOT staying permanently) to His apostles and disciples, according to His plan to reinforce the faith of the followers. (One time he appeared to more than 500 brethren assembled together, as St. Paul tells us in 1 Cor. 15:6.) The last time He appeared to His followers Jesus used the powerful image of levitation (suspension and movement of our bodies in mid-air, naturally without artificial means of support whatsoever) because of the Jewish popular belief, that we colloquially also follow today, that God s house is in the Heavens! The Ascension commemorates the last public appearance of Jesus on earth before His second coming. We know Jesus made private appearances at a later time. Even in Biblical Times, the most famous one, is when Jesus manifested His personal identity with the persecuted Christians to the persecutor Saul, on His journey to Damascus (Acts 9:4; Phil 3:6). The Ascension also give us the consoling pre-figuration of our own resurrection, when our bodies ( Pneumatica Somata in St. Paul s words) will be reunited with our souls to start the never-ending eternity in paradise! NEXT SUNDAY IS PENTECOST SUNDAY, the birthday of all of us, the Catholics! We celebrate the visible sign of the Holy Spirit, the red-hot flames which fell on Mary and the rest of Jesus disciples,...wear RED NEXT SUNDAY. About the U.S. Bishops statement in 2003, please note the Church Law: In distributing the sacraments, Holy Communion, it is to be remembered that sacred ministers may not deny the sacrament to those who seek it in a reasonable manner, are rightly disposed and are not prohibited by law from receiving it. Hence, any baptized Catholic who is not prevented by law (like an excommunicated person) must be admitted to Holy Communion. Therefore, it is not licit to deny Holy Communion to any of Christ s faithful solely on the grounds, for example, that the person wishes to receive the Eucharist kneeling or standing and, by the way, all the faithful always have the right to receive Holy Communion on the tongue or in the hand, at their choice. If any THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD communicant should wish to receive the sacrament in the hand, the sacred host is to be administered to him or her. However, special care should be taken to ensure that the host is consumed by the communicant in the presence of the minister, so that no one leaves the church carrying the Eucharistic species. HAPPY MOTHER S DAY TO ALL OF YOU BELOVED MOTHERS! May the good Lord Jesus reward you for all your sacrifices! And may the Blessed Mother join her maternal prayers to yours, so that God will listen more speedily to your prayers, and protect your children and grandchildren. And also a Happy Mother s Day to any mother who has aborted her baby. May our all-forgiving and compassionate Father in Heaven, and her little angel now in Paradise, help Mom in accepting her tragedy, and forgiving herself, as God does, in His incredible, crazy love for us! Also, let us pray this month for the eternal rest of our deceased mothers, that they may enjoy in paradise the reward of their sacrifices here on earth in raising us. Today, the St. Martha Religious Education children crown our Blessed Mother during the 9:00 a.m. Mass in the Parish Hall. All children are invited to participate. Also, the Pre-K Class, from St. Martha s School, will crown the Blessed Mother in the Church at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. Today is the last day of Religious Education, culminating with the Blessed Mary s crownings. May Mary be always in our filial hearts! May God reward our Religious Education staff and volunteers for their sacrifices during this year of teaching God s children. There will not be a 9:00 a.m. in the Hall until the Fall. Remember that you are in the Lord s house, please dress appropriately when you come to Mass. TODAY WE HAVE THE ANNUAL CATHOLIC COMMUNICATION COLLECTION. Contributions to this campaign continue the work of communicating the Gospel message in our country. Please remember, 50% of all funds collected remain here in the Diocese of Venice to support our local communication and evangelization efforts which include the weekly broadcast of the televised Mass. Thank you for your generosity! Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha s priests: Frs. Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry; Deacons Bill, Patrick, & Kevin; Brs. Bill, Tom, Paul & Lawrence and Srs. Cathy & Marianne PRAY THE DAILY ROSARY DURING MAY Join the St. Martha parishioners who meet after the 7:30 a.m. Mass, six days a week, Monday through Saturday, and before the 12 noon Mass (11:35 a.m.), Monday through Friday, to pray the Rosary together. Please come and join them in this beautiful prayer.
3 MOTHER S DAY Year of Mercy: December 8, 2015 November 20, 2016 "Jesus disconcerted people. His words, His actions, His silences were disconcerting, using an inclusive language, the language of mercy. Through this language Jesus welcomed society s outcasts, those who lived on the outskirts because they had no place in the city, those whom no one saw or listened to because they had neither face nor voice, beggars by necessity, since they had no rights, the little, the sick, women, among whom is the public sinner or the woman of perfume, as I like to call her...(lk 7: 36-50) Jesus merciful attitude was profoundly human and liberating: on the one hand He broke taboos, demolished boundaries, dismantled prejudices, relativized laws and unmasked injustice; on the other He generated closeness, relationships, dialogue and intimacy, and promoted the authentic interpersonal encounter. Meeting Jesus was always a starting point, a window open to the future, an incentive to hope, a gaze of mercy. - Pope Francis This Mother s Day, we express our heartfelt thanks to our mothers for their unconditional love and guidance. President Theodore Roosevelt once said, The mother is the one supreme asset of national life; she is more important by far than the successful statesman, or businessman or artist or scientist. Today, mothers continue to play a vital part of our national character. On Mother s Day, we honor the women whose steadfast love and wisdom have made America a great nation. 4 St. Martha Roman Catholic Church The greeting-card makers, the florists and the restaurants all encourage us to thank our moms on this Mother's Day. However, more than 50 million children aren't here to do that. These are the children who have been aborted since the Roe v. Wade court decision. Their moms won't have those children on earth today to honor them. May all of us who are fortunate enough to be here today tell our moms how much we appreciate their love in choosing life for us. For more details, call the Diocese at CELEBRATING A CORE BELIEF On this Seventh Sunday of Easter, most Catholics in the United States also celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Christ s Ascension is very important to us. It is one of our core beliefs, and when we profess our faith at Mass, regardless of which Creed we use, we declare: He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. To deny Christ s Ascension is to deny His Resurrection. Before His Ascension, which is described in our First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus tells His followers, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. We, too, have been baptized and imbued with the Holy Spirit. This Third Member of the Holy Trinity empowers each of us. We may think that the Holy Spirit has more work to do among those who do not believe, but there also is considerable work to be done among those of us who do believe. We are called to serve; we are called to discipleship; we are called to lives of stewardship; we are reminded of these things in all of today s readings. In his homily on the Ascension of Christ last year, Pope Francis said: The Ascension tells us He is with God the Father, where He always intercedes in our favor. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
