2 JANUARY 7, 2018 PSALTER WEEK IV From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Happy New Year, Dear Parishioners. May it be filled with good health, spiritual progress, and peace of mind! The Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, which commemorates the finding of the newlyborn Jesus by the three Magi Kings, comes from the second chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, who quoted an Old Testament prophecy A star shall advance from Jacob (Num 24:17). Actually, if we carefully read that chapter, we know that if the gifts brought to Jesus were three (Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh), we are not told the number of the Magi Kings, definitely there were more than two. They were not Kings either but Magi, a term that indicated the astrologers of Persia (modern Iran). In those times, when astronomy as a science was in its infancy, and a great mixture of the sacred and of the profane was common among the scientists, astrology was the science which predicted the events of life. Because of their lack of optics and of true knowledge of the universe, those ancient astrologers mixed the little reality they knew with fanciful superstitious beliefs. Among them, for example, was the belief that a bright star, or a comet, or a shooting star would appear whenever a King was born. Those astrologers followed such a star/comet which kind of disappeared near Jerusalem, where they inquired about the new born King, and then the star reappeared to stop over Bethlehem. The meaning of the Epiphany, a Greek word which means roughly, to show, to appear, to reveal, goes far beyond the Magi and the star. It signifies, first of all, that Jesus came to save not just the Jews, but also the Gentiles. That is why the Eastern Churches celebrate Christmas at the Epiphany and not on Christmas. In Southern Europe the gifts under the Christmas tree are opened on the Epiphany. An added meaning is that with the coming of Christ, all superstitions and all the occult sciences, like astrology, cease to exist; there is no need to guess the future. Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end of time, and of the years. Jesus is our number one! So...why do so many Christians read the horoscope? Even worse, why do so many Christians believe in them and follow them? BELIEVE ONLY IN GOD! Resolve to stop all belief in mediums, horoscopes, séances, palm readers, and the like, because such individuals falsely claim to have extrasensory perceptions and abilities. Sometimes they do have special parapsychological qualities (maybe only one in ten thousand or more charlatans!) but even such gifted people, who seem to bend a steel nail by their phenomenal concentration, cannot make divinations or guess the future: ONLY GOD CAN!!! I hear again and again from some parishioners that once upon a time some seer or medium gave them an exact prediction of a future happening. I have no doubt that it is a true claim! But let me ask you; do you know the scientific laws that govern statistics, chaos laws, probable projections and the like? The entire betting industry, not to mention the art of economic forecasting, is based on such laws! And there are scientific models of probable hits in almost every human field! Let me give you an example: one year will dawn on earth when I ll see January 1, but not December 31, because that year will be the year of my death. What is the probability that I would die this year? I do not know, but an insurance table can tell me how a man of my age will statistically survive this year, if the insurer has also knowledge of certain health habits (or unhealthy ones) and considers other factors such as a given body weight for example (ahi! ahi! ahi!... how did your girt fare in the past holidays??). A knowledgeable person could then predict my death in this year with a 70% probability, even without knowing the future. If I die, that prediction will look like a miracle. So, any person can deceive another, with a little fanfare, atmosphere and tricks (there is nothing supernatural in a magician s bag of tricks, just old-fashioned dexterity and knowledge of laws of physics, perspectives, etc., etc.), helped by people who are so stressed out, that they are psychologically ready to be taken by any conniver who assures them of any easy solution or a beautiful future! By the laws of statistics, SOME of the predictions of a seer will definitely come true, and the people with such luck will go back again and again to the seer, swearing on the powers of that medium or seer! It will become a dangerous psychological addiction, like the gambler who goes to Las Vegas time and time again... following a mirage and losing everything. In our case, people who go to seers may lose their faith in God, our Creator! It is much better to follow Jesus star than false idols, creatures of the devil! This weekend we are having the annual collection for Seminarian Education and Vocation Awareness. We need nuns/sisters, monks/brothers, deacons and priests! Jesus recommended us to pray to God the Father to send workers (clerics and religious) into HIS vineyard (world). Money will help to educate them, but if there are no seminarians in the Seminaries or Formations Houses, that money is useless, because money cannot buy vocations, only God can give the call (vocation) and only unceasing prayers can move God s heart to grant vocations. Can you offer a spiritual action: Rosary, communion, Holy Mass, visit to the Blessed Sacrament? We need your prayers, as we all need holy priests, deacons, and women & men religious! Today is Caritas Sunday when the Caritas volunteers are at the doors of the Church asking for your donations to help the needy in our downtown area. Thank you for your generosity.
