2 DECEMBER 16, 2018 PSALTER WEEK III From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Have you noticed in the Nativity scene, how the baby Jesus keeps His tiny hands? Usually it is with half-outstretched arms with empty palms up! And do you know why? Because He is thinking: Look at these good Catholics it is MY birthday and look who is getting the gifts! NOT ME, but them! Listen to Jesus, my good Christians: If you have a birthday party for your child, maybe at McDonalds, and all the friends bring a gift, and they give gifts to each other, and no gift to the birthday child what would the birthday child think of those friends? But what can we give to Jesus? In our hearts, Jesus is buried under a ton of material burdens and sins. A humble and contrite heart, purified by confession, is the best gift we can give to Jesus. (Confession, Holy Communion, Almsgiving). All of us are sinners, from the Pope down to the Bishops, to us priests, to all human beings; all of us need God s forgiveness which is given freely in the Sacrament of Penance. Remember that Jesus will forgive our EVERY SIN, if and when we are sorry for doing them, and we try firmly not to sin again. In today s Gospel, Luke shows that the priests and scribes and politicians of John s time did not listen to his message of repentance. But the poor people, soldiers, and sinners did listen to him, repented, and accepted the strong symbolic ceremony of washing and purifying themselves in the water of the Jordan River. We Catholics pray in the Funeral Mass: through Baptism we die with Christ. Indeed a strange expression! But it is valid because the Jews entered and got submerged by John in the watery tomb of the Jordan! So, then, let us turn our hearts to God, and if we need, let us go to confession. Some Catholics feel uneasy about confession for many reasons, such as: 1. I do not go because I forgot the starting formula ( Forgive me Father for I have sinned ) or the Act of Contrition Do we really think that postponing confession for another year will improve our memory? 2. The Act of Contrition should be expressed in our own wording Can you imagine if, after a fight, the wife will say to the husband: Oh my supreme husband, I am truly sorry to have offended thee, because you are so good and worthy of all sacrifices etc, etc. It sounds so silly, doesn t it? How simple it is to say in confession: My good Jesus, I m sorry I ll do better from now on! 3. All mortal sins must be confessed! Sometimes we feel ashamed, as if our sins are so horrendous, and we re afraid that we will shock the priests. On the contrary, I m afraid that our priestly sins will shock you, every time they are reported in the mass media! Besides being sinners like everyone else, we priests had two full years of studies in Moral Theology, and there is not a sin we have not studied in detail or heard before! A few of us have the feeling that our sins are so serious, that God cannot forgive them! Nonsense! The mercy of God is infinitely superior to any of our sins! The worst temptation of the Devil is to convince us that the Spirit of Love of God cannot forgive, and so we do not ask pardon, and remain separated from God in this, and, God forbid, in the other life! Let s go now to confession and receive the peace of Jesus. All year, Sunday through Friday, Confessions are at 11:30 a.m.; Saturday, 9-10 a.m., and 3-4 p.m. And during Christmas week, three full days, Saturday, December 22, Sunday, December 23, and Monday, December 24. See the schedule in this bulletin. Don t forget if you will be traveling on Christmas, please use your envelope, either before you go or after you return. If you do not normally use an envelope, or are a visitor here at Christmas, please use the envelopes in the pews or at the entrance of the church and hall. Thank you! Our dear and amazing Brother William Hudspeth was returned to the author of all life on Wednesday, December 5, Brother William Hudspeth, S.A.C. (Pallotine Fathers and Brothers) spent the majority of his life as a Catholic Brother in consecrated life. He dedicated his life to serving those in need in various cities, working with persons with developmental challenges, assisting in homeless shelters, and working in homes for children without parents. The last few years Br. Bill ministered to persons of St. Martha parish who were homebound. Br. Bill was born on May 15, 1942 in Gilroy, CA to Worth and Katherine Hudspeth, the sixth of nine children. He was raised primarily in Iowa and Minnesota. He is survived by his sisters, Elizabeth Hudspeth Scallon (Boscobel, WI), Patricia Jane Hudspeth Elbert (Blue Earth, MN), and Mary Joyce Hudspeth Kunkel (New Berlin, WI); his brother, Dennis Hudspeth (Algona, IA) and numerous nieces and nephews, whom he adored. Br. Bill ministered and lived with his confreres from St. Martha parish in Sarasota for the past 29 years. A dear friend, Dr. Jill Johnson says of Br. Bill: I will think of his gentleness and acceptance and love for all, especially persons with developmental challenges. He had great affection for the care of our earth. With a big smile we all remember that he shared with everyone the thrill of flea markets. His only regret might be that he was never on Antiques Roadshow. Br. Bill had amazing love for all life. He dearly cherished his family and friends, a person of abounding faith in our God. We say to Br. Bill, Love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation - Khalil Gibran, The Prophet You are loved and deeply, deeply missed my brother. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. 4 BULLETIN PASTOR In 1531, when the indigenous peoples of Mexico were subjugated and the practice of human sacrifice was still a recent memory, the Mother of God appeared to St. Juan Diego as a pregnant native woman, now known as Our Lady of Guadalupe. She sent him with miraculous flowers in his cloak to tell the bishop to build a church where people could receive her Son and her loving, tender care. When St. Juan Diego opened the cloak before the bishop, an image of Our Lady was revealed that remains to this day. The chapel was quickly built, millions embraced Christianity, and the Church increased its protection of the indigenous peoples. Pope Francis Taping of the Christmas Day Mass Televised Mass - All are invited to attend the taping of the televised Christmas Day Mass for the Homebound at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 18 at Our Lady of the Angels Parish Chapel, Bishop Frank J. El día de hoy se le ha llamado tradicionalmente Domingo Gaudete o de la Alegría. El nombre latino se deriva de la petición de Pedro en la segunda lectura de alégrense siempre en el Señor, y del texto de la Misa en latín en el que está basada esta lectura. La ironía y paradoja de esta alegría cristiana se manifiesta en el hecho que Pablo escribió esas palabras en la prisión. Pero desde allí podía ver el progreso de la obra de Dios. Nos parece obvio a nosotros? Sentimos que este no es un tiempo para la alegría cuando hay tanto sufrimiento e inmoralidad. Es interesante, entonces, que la primera lectura sea del profeta Sofonías, que está casi exclusivamente preocupado con sombrías visiones del Día del Juicio. Hoy la Iglesia selecciona la única parte optimista de Sofonías, donde el profeta es tocado por el espíritu del gozo. Esta es, se nos asegura en todas partes, la temporada de la alegría.
