2 JULY 2, 2017 PSALTER WEEK I From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Happy Fourth of July...our Independence Day! May the flame of freedom never cease to burn in our beloved land: One nation under god with liberty and justice for all! And don t forget our Mass schedule on July 4 is: 7:30, 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. There will not be a Noon or 5:30 p.m. Mass! Today s gospel continues the strong recommendation by Jesus in last Sunday s gospel: fear not your adversaries. In the present gospel Jesus offers us a choice again between Him and material possessions and state of life. Jesus wants us to put Him NUMBER ONE in our lives. Our total belonging to Jesus has to be chosen even over the most precious and tender loves of our emotional life. In listening to His words about love of parents, spouses or children, we must remember that Jesus was a Mediterranean man, grown up in an atmosphere where people expressed their views in exaggerated verbal or gesture forms to drive home a point, but in such a way to hit the sensitivity and the minds of the hearers or spectators. Think of Hosea 1-2, Ez 3:1-4, Ez 5:1-5, Ez 23, Ez 37, Jer 13:1-11 or of Jesus command: Be perfect as my Father in heaven is perfect which is certainly impossible to fulfill if taken literally. The Mediterraneans of Jesus time were like the New Yorkers of today, who find the adjectives fantastic or fabulous not strong enough and so blended them together to form FANTABULOUS! So in today s gospel Jesus message is to put Jesus ahead of all our thoughts, desires, possessions or relatives: are we listening? Is Jesus NUMBER ONE in our hearts? Thanks to you dear parishioners, pledges are 87% of our goal for the 2017 Catholic Faith Appeal. Thank you! Your generosity is so appreciated. But we are not there quite yet. If you have not completed your individual pledge, please be sure to continue making payments because when we reach 100%, we receive all donations over the stated goal! Next Sunday is Caritas Sunday, when the members of Caritas (all volunteers) seek your donations at the doors of the church to help them continue to assist the needy of our area. Many items are given to Moms, the rest is sold to benefit the moms and babies in our area. The following are needed most: small kitchen appliances, towels, bedding, household items like pots and pans and dishes, furniture (we can't take TV s, computers, or appliances). 5 Jesus Christ loves you; he gave his life to save you; and now he is living at your side every day to enlighten, strengthen, and free you. -Pope Francis WE ARE CALLED Our First Reading from Second Kings, chapter 4, features Elisha. You may recall that Elisha was plowing in a field when the prophet Elijah called him to follow him. Something happened at that moment and Elisha chose to do it, which is what brought him to this point in his journey (as reported in today s Holy Scripture). We often address the fact that each of us is called as well. Our calling, like Elisha s and like those of Christ s Apostles, is really not that much different. Christ said, Follow Me, and the Apostles basically dropped everything, ceased pursuing what they were doing - in some cases with good jobs and vocations - and followed Christ. We are called to follow the Lord from the moment of our Baptism, but how many of us actually take that calling seriously? It is not just a question of hearing the call; the key is whether we are listening for it? It is there, but we must be aware of it in order to respond. Elisha s call and our calls are signs of God at work. God has a plan for each of us. We are the means by which God s work is continued in our parishes, in our communities, and in the Church. God s ministry on earth will be carried out and accomplished. None of us is the entire ministry; we can all be replaced. However, by the same token in God s eyes we are absolutely necessary. La resurrección de Cristo no es solamente la historia de algo por lo que él pasó una vez hace tiempo, sino que es nuestra historia, la historia de cómo nos unimos a los otros miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo, la Iglesia.
