2 SEPTEMBER 24, 2017 PSALTER WEEK I From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, From the Office of the Bishop: Many parishioners who were adversely affected by Hurricane Irma, continue to struggle with the damages caused by the winds and flooding to their homes, while also living in Florida s heat without power and water. To aid people across the region, I directed Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice Inc. to set up 11 relief centers in communities of greatest impact. These disaster response sites are in Arcadia, Clewiston, Moore Haven, Sebring, Lake Placid, Fort Myers, Immokalee, Bonita Springs, Wauchula, and Naples. Rest assured this relief effort will continue for the duration of the demand. The Diocese and Catholic Charities will strive to aid our brothers and sisters in Christ to recover from Hurricane Irma. For the faithful wanting to financially support the relief effort, Catholic Charities has a donation page which can be found on the Diocese of Venice homepage at or on the Catholic Charities donation page located at catholiccharitiesdov.weshareonline.org/ws/opportunities/ GeneralDonations/donate. Thank you and let us continue to pray for the well-being of all. God Bless you for your good-works and kindness. (Diocese of Venice consists of 10 counties in Southwest Florida: Manatee, Hardee, Highlands, DeSoto, Sarasota, Charlotte, Glades, Lee, Hendry, and Collier). THANK YOU JESUS! We, at St. Martha, were spared the blunt of Irma, but throughout the diocese the wounds of Hurricane Irma are still with us: let s help those who are in need of our help! St. Martha Parish is collecting non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies, and $20 Walmart gift cards to help those in Arcadia, Wauchula, and surrounding areas until September 29 th. Donations can be dropped off at the Parish Office, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The powerful message of today s Gospel should give us so much joy and hope to enter into paradise, notwithstanding how much guilt we feel for all our weaknesses, sins and lack of love! From a social justice perspective, if a person works one hour only, the compensation should be for one hour, and not for a full day of work. Therefore, we must agree with the foreman and not with the owner of the vineyard. But God had already foretold through Isaiah, the prophet: My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways as high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts. And Jesus made this prophecy real in the parable of the workers: Are you envious because I am generous? God will not hold us at the final judgment only according to His justice, but God will go beyond His justice with the gift of His immeasurable mercy to us. Although the teaching originated with making clear to His followers that we Gentiles will be saved, even if we entered last into the covenant with God, the teaching for us is a consideration of the infinite mercy of God, who will accept into Paradise even the worst sinners, who on their deathbed will ask Jesus for forgiveness. Not only that, the Bible also teaches us (1 Cor 7: 14) that an unbelieving spouse, or child, is made holy (and so saved) thru the believing spouse, who becomes the lightning rod of the justice of God, short-circuiting His justice, and leaving only His mercy to open the doors of paradise to them! Remember that God s love is everlasting. We may kick God out of our lives, businesses and relationships, but God will always relentlessly beg us again and again to return to Him, even at the last hour of our earthly existence, because God is crazily in love with us! People still ask about cremation! Our U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops proclaimed: The Church s belief in the sacredness of the human body and the resurrection of the dead has traditionally found expression in the care taken to prepare the bodies of the deceased for burial. This is the body once washed in Baptism, anointed with the oil of salvation and fed with the bread of life. This is the body whose hands clothed the poor and embraced the sorrowing. Indeed, the human body is so inextricably associated with the human person that it is hard to think of a human person apart from his or her body. Thus, the Church s reverence and concern for the person whom the Church now commends to the care of God. Thus, while cremation is now permitted, it does not enjoy the same value as burial of the body The Church clearly prefers and urges that the body of the deceased be present for the funeral rite, since the presence of the human body better expresses the values which the Church affirms in its rites. While cremated remains may be buried in a grave, entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium or even buried at sea, the practice of scattering cremated remains at sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition that the Church prefers. The cremated remains of the body may be properly buried at sea in the urn, coffin or other container in which they have been carried to the place of committal. Our season is beginning and our ministries are starting to come back to life after a restful summer. Please take the time to read about the ministry meetings in the bulletin, and call one of the groups to find out more about what the Eucharistic Adoration, Rosary Makers, Parish Choirs, Council of Catholic Women, Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Lectors, Altar Servers, Ushers, or Legion of Mary - to name just a few - are all about, and become active in the parish groups. The ministry leaders names and telephone numbers are printed in the bulletin. Today, we are facing terrible, frightening threats from ISIS. In the article, The Catholic Thing, Robert Royal, president of the Faith & Reason Institute in Washington, DC, puts the ISIS crisis into the scheme of Catholic just-war theory, and it fits. He quotes an article by Fr. Luciano Larivera, S.J. in La Civilta Cattolica (a Jesuit publication in Rome regarded as an authoritative, if indirect, papal voice): Obviously, to promote peace it is necessary to know what the war truly is, and not what one would like it to be. It is crucial to study and to comprehend why and how the Islamic State (i.e., ISIS) fights. Theirs is a war of religion and of annihilation. When ISIS want to behead our men, kill women and

3 25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME innocents, force women into slavery and take over our possessions and deprive us of the God-given freedoms we Americans enjoy; this is evil, and our Christian answer for the past 2000 years has been to fight evil! Everybody remembers Jesus words to Simon Peter in the Garden of Gethsemane: Put your sword into its scabbard. Shall I not drink the cup that the Father gave me? (Jn 18:11), but very few remember when He told them: When I sent you forth without a money bag or a sack or sandals, were you in need of anything? No, nothing, they replied. He said to them, But now one who has a money bag should take it, and likewise a sack, and one who does not have a sword should sell his cloak and buy one. For I tell you that this scripture must be fulfilled in me, namely, He was counted among the wicked; and indeed what is written about me is coming to fulfillment. (Lk 22: 35-38) So we must call it what no one likes: war. It s not an answer, but the only way, people who are bent on doing evil, will understand. Doing nothing is not an option, then we let evil fester like an incurable, deadly cancer. Please continue to pray for peace! Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto Next week, our Parish will celebrate the 90th Anniversary of its raising from mission status to be a parish. The date was October 1, 1927 This is the third part of a four-part series presenting the story of the growth of the Catholic Church in our part of Southwest Florida in the years leading up to Rev. Fr. Charles Elslander, first pastor of St. Martha Parish By 1924, the desire of the St. Martha mission congregation to be a parish led to forming the first organization: the Catholic Women s Club. The purpose of the club was to raise money to pay for a pair of representatives to travel to St. Augustine to petition the Bishop to elevate St. Martha to a parish. Bishop Patrick Barry informed the delegation that he had to turn them down, since he did not have a priest available to assign to the new parish. Through the 1920 s most priests in Florida were European immigrants (France or Ireland) or had relocated from states to the north of Florida. There were virtually no priests who were Florida natives. Bishop Barry had hoped to assign a Florida native as Sarasota s new pastor. One priest came to mind - not Florida-born, but who had grown up in Florida. Bishop Barry himself had ordained this priest, the first to be ordained in Florida, Father Charles Louis Elslander. Charles Elslander was a Midwesterner, by birth, born the fifth child of Leopold and Philomena (De Fryne) Elslander of Atkinson, Illinois in The Elslanders relocated first to Cleveland, Mississippi in 1896, then to San Antonio, Florida in San Antonio was a Catholic outpost, founded in the 1880 s, 25 miles north of Tampa. San Antonio, like Sarasota in the 1890 s, was on the frontier. However, it had Catholic schools, something most Florida towns and cities at that time did not have. Young Charles graduated from St. Leo High School in San Antonio in Four years passed before Charles entered the seminary at Mount St. Mary s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland. He transferred to St. Joseph s Seminary (Dunwoodie) in Yonkers, New York. He was ordained in St. Augustine, Florida June 11, 1922 by Bishop Patrick Barry. The young Fr. Elslander served as an assistant pastor at the Cathedral in St. Augustine, St. Mary s Church in St. Petersburg and at St. James Church in Orlando. His first assignment as pastor was at Blessed Sacrament Church in Tallahassee, which had several rural mission stations. This was in Fall, Fr. Elslander s next assignment would be the St. Martha Mission in Sarasota. That assignment would take effect October 1, 1927.

4 BULLETIN The readings today emphasize mercy and forgiveness. These themes always accompany our teaching about abortion. They impel us to invite to reconciliation those who have been far from the Church because of past involvement with abortion. We not only invite them to reconciliation. We also invite the rest of our people to think in God's way about those who have had abortions, not with thoughts of condemnation or punishment, but with eagerness to welcome and console. SEPTEMBER 27 NOVEMBER 5, 2017 During this time our community will join hundreds of other cities participating in the 40 Days for Life, a lifesaving campaign made up of three components: 40 days of prayer and fasting 40 days of peaceful vigil 40 days of community outreach ST. MARTHA S VIGIL DAYS Thursday, September 28 Saturday, September 30 Tuesday, October 3 Saturday, October 14 You can sign up for a vigil hour THIS WEEKEND before and after all Masses to represent St. Martha on our assigned days. For more information, contact David or Paula Shigley, Why do I have to go to an abortion center? Can t I pray at home or at church? You need to pray outside the abortion facility because your prayers there have an immediate impact on an urgent situation. Yes, God hears and answers prayers, no matter where they re said. But when women arriving for abortions see the public vigil, they know and understand that at the moment they need it most, someone is praying specifically for them. Your presence there is the sign of hope before the abortion...and the first sign of mercy after the abortion. Many of the moms who have chosen life...and even former abortion workers...say the prayer presence outside turned them away from abortion. They saw that someone was there, just for them. J G H S C! PASTOR pastor@stmartha.org Jesus, we commend to you the sick, the unhappy, the poor, and all who beg for food and employment, imploring for all the assistance of your providence. 5 Forgiveness reminds us that we can truly be at peace only if we allow ourselves to be reconciled, in the Lord Jesus, with the Father and with the brethren. -Pope Francis EVERYTHING COMES FROM GOD In our First Reading from the Book of Isaiah, God reminds us that He does not think in the same way that we do. For my thoughts are not your thoughts. That is quite clear in our Gospel today from Matthew, which relates the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard. In the Gospel parable, God (who is represented by the landowner ) does something which from our human perspective may seem unfair and unjust. What we must keep in mind is that the landowner did not treat anyone unfairly. He may have seemed more generous to some than to others, but again that is from our perspective. We can be absolutely certain that God will never be unfair to us. The Lord may bestow greater blessings on others, some of whom again from our perspective may seem less deserving. God is a righteous God. Through stewardship we acknowledge that everything comes to us from God. All our blessings may seem to be more or less than we deserve, but if we are grateful for what we have and what we are, we will then recognize God s generosity and His grace. The important thing to us should not be and cannot be whether we are first or last. What is central is that we are part of the Kingdom of God. That should be sufficient for us. We get into trouble when we conclude that God should think the way we do. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. ST. MARTHA CLERGY AND STAFF Very Rev.
