2 APRIL 21, 2019 PSALTER WEEK I From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Holy and Happy Easter to all of you, St. Martha parishioners and visitors. When on that fateful Friday, a little, sad funeral was bringing Jesus lifeless body to be buried in a brand new tomb donated by a friend of the Master, everything seemed lost and pointless! The Romans, oppressors of the Jewish nation, had crucified and killed Jesus. The procurator, Pontius Pilate, condemned Jesus to die on the cross but His name has lived in infamy in our Christian Creed, proclaimed every feast day in all Christian Churches. The Great Healer, who could raise the dead, was Himself a pierced, lifeless, dead body! The intoxication of the triumphant entrance into Jerusalem had faded into an unbroken despair! All the dreams of a glorious restoration of a Jewish Kingdom were now seen just as a bad joke: We were hoping that He would be the one to redeem Israel (Luke 24:21). All the talk of being the Son of God, and rising from he dead (Mark: 9-10), were now seen as the manic expressions of a kind, charismatic and gentle, but self-deluded, mentally deranged, crazy healer. Nobody on that early Sunday morning took Jesus Resurrection seriously! The disciples were locked in their upper-room, waiting for the fateful knock on the door by the Temple guards, and waiting to be arrested, or worse, for following Jesus. The women were just wondering who was going to roll the tombstone. If they had believed in Jesus Resurrection, they would not have gone to the tomb in the first place! Of all the people standing at the foot of the cross, only one did not go to the tomb that morning: Mary, the Mother of Jesus! Mary from Magdala was the leader of the women who went to cry over Jesus body. But when the women went to the tomb, they found an empty tomb. Mary of Magdala ran up to the cenacle, the upper room of the Last Supper, and told Simon Peter: They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don t know where they have put Him. Meanwhile, the other women saw an angelic vision which stunned them into speechless silence. Peter, John, with Magdalene in tow, went to the tomb. Young John was puzzled, not only by the fact of the empty tomb itself, but also that the burial shroud was there, but rolled up on one side, and the Sudarium (face cloth) rolled up in another place. Right then John realized that the body was not stolen, but that the Lord was risen. Then leaving Magdalene kneeling down in tears, facing the black opening of the empty tomb, Peter and John left. They went back to the cenacle and gave the news of the empty tomb which had brought so much sadness to all, because the other Apostles realized that Jesus enemies did not even want to let his body rest in peace. Then Jesus, alive and well, appeared to Mary Magdalene! And the few passersby of the still deserted streets of Jerusalem saw a young woman running and screaming like crazy: He s alive, He s risen! And she pounded on the locked door of the cenacle. When Jesus half-distraught disciples opened the door and listened to Mary s screams, they thought that she had gone mad with pain at Jesus tragic death, and at the ultimate insult to His memory by His tomb s profanation, and by the theft of His martyred body. And then, Shalom (Peace to You) they turned, and just there, inside the locked door, unmistakably alive and well, and smiling and radiant, was Jesus. He did rise as He had promised! Today, we, Jesus followers, share the inexpressible joy of the early disciples in recognizing the incredible, impossible, mindboggling reality of Jesus Resurrection, which makes us certain of our own resurrection and eternal life in Paradise, forever and ever! So, my dear friends, let us follow Jesus in accepting to carry our crosses, in facing our sufferings and death, in looking at our tomb as a door to heaven, all knowing well that we will have a second, glorious, endless life with our Savior Jesus. And not only we Christians will be saved, but also all those who have followed in their lives the image of God embedded at creation in every human being. Next Sunday is Divine Mercy Sunday. Pope John Paul II canonized Sister Faustina Kowalska in April 2000, and April 22, 2001, was the first Divine Mercy Sunday available to all Catholics worldwide. Between the years 1930 and 1938, Jesus visited St. Faustina and promised to be especially merciful to those who ask for forgiveness and take part in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Holy Communion. She was a Sister of Mercy and started the devotion for the Divine Mercy. On this day, April 28, St. Martha will celebrate the Divine Mercy feast beginning at 2:30 pm. Let us show our Lord how much we need and appreciate His mercy by attending this celebration which will include the Divine Mercy Chaplet, confession, exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Mass. A memorial Mass for our beloved development director, Maria DeSanto will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 26th, one day before her 80th birthday, in thanksgiving to God for her outstanding ministry to God s people of St. Martha. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Jan, John & Jerry Deacons Bill, Patrick & Robert and Brothers Tom & Lawrence & Sister Cathy DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY APRIL 28, 2019 It became known to us as Divine Mercy Sunday on May 23, 2000, less than a month after Pope John Paul II canonized Sister Faustina Kowalska, a saint of the Catholic Church. St. Martha will have a Divine Mercy Holy Hour at 2:30 p.m. on April 28 in the Church. This will include the Divine Mercy Chaplet, confession, exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Mass.
