2 JULY 29, 2018 PSALTER WEEK I From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, What an interesting Gospel today! John, as you are well aware, wrote his Gospel after the other three evangelists (Mark, Matthew, Luke) wrote theirs. He is the one who tried to add narratives and explanations to the other Gospel writers, like the famous explanation of the Institution of the Eucharist. John did not report on the Institution when describing the Last Supper. He probably thought that the other three evangelists covered this Institution in abundance. In describing the miracle of the multiplication of the barley loaves, John pre-figures it as a symbol of the multiplication of the Eucharistic Bread among the millions and millions of us believers, who, though many, we firmly believe in: one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, and works through all, and is in all (Eph 4:6). That is why we must make every effort to preserve unity among us. That is also the reason why our Holy Father, this giant saintly man, reminds us that only those who are in unity with Peter can receive Holy Communion at a Catholic Mass; because those who accept Jesus body must be also in unity with the shepherd Jesus has appointed to guide His Church. Sometimes people say that they accept Jesus as Savior beautiful, but then they must accept Jesus teachings totally, and not pick and choose what they like. We must strive to raise ourselves to the level of God, and not reduce God down to our little minds: in this case, we just worship ourselves, deluding ourselves to serve God. Today, July 29, we celebrate the feast of St. Martha, the Patroness of our Parish. Martha was the sister of Mary of Bethany. We know only what we read about her in the Gospels of Luke and John. Whatever is said about her early life comes to us from apocryphal writings which usually are no more than the work of somebody s imagination. We know that she busied herself preparing a meal for Jesus and his disciples, and then went to Jesus to complain that Mary did nothing while she had to do all the housework. It was at that time that Jesus reminded her that Mary had chosen the best part. We see her again when, at the tomb of her brother, Lazarus, she pronounced those profound words of faith which have come into our funeral liturgy: I know he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day. Jesus told her: I am the resurrection and the life: whoever believes in me, though he should die, will come to life Do you believe this? Yes, Lord, she replied. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God; He who is to come into the World. The cult of St. Martha began about the year Where or how she died, we do not know. Whether hers was a martyr s death or a natural one, we do not know. We do know that she is our patroness intercessor in the presence of God. Because she took care of the hungry, the followers of Jesus traditionally know her as the Patroness of housewives, waiters, and waitresses. Let us follow her example in caring for the homeless, poor, HIV sufferers among us! Let us pray to God through her for the needs of the parish and for our own personal needs, material and spiritual. The prayer to St. Martha is as follows: St. Martha, I resort to your protection and aid. Comfort me in all my difficulties, and through the great favor you did enjoy when the Savior was lodged in thy house; intercede for my family that we may always hold God in our hearts, and that we may be provided for in all our necessities. I ask you, dear St. Martha, to overcome all difficulties as you did overcome the dragon at your feet. This novena may be said for nine consecutive Tuesdays with the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be to the Father for the intentions of our Holy Father. Next Sunday is Caritas Sunday! The poor need our help. This past month you generous parishioners gave $4,601! Thank you. God will remember this in Paradise! Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. How did St. Martha leave the toil of her kitchen in Bethany to find herself conquering dragons in a faraway land? It appears in The Golden Legend, a series of oral and written traditions, that a persecution of Christians had ensued soon after Christ ascended into heaven. Martha, her brother Lazarus, and her sister Mary were placed in a boat and set adrift into the Mediterranean Sea. They arrived at the region of Aix where they preached to and converted the inhabitants. Armed with only holy water and a cross, she found the creature feasting on a man in the cave of a dark, shadowy forest. Sprinkling holy water on the dragon, he was stunned into a trance and Martha tied her girdle around his neck. The townspeople then immobilized the beast and killed it with spears and stones. Thereafter, the people were converted to the Faith and named their town Tarascon to commemorate the monster that Martha overcame. Join us each Tuesday in July at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel at Incarnation Parish starting with a Holy Hour followed by a barbeque and talk and concluding with more fellowship! The final Grilling with Grace will take place on Siesta Key Beach at the pavilion with Bishop Frank J. Dewane as the speaker! $5 suggested donation for food. Bereavement Support - The Diocese of Venice will be offering a series of Bereavement workshops and training. Salmo 145 (144):15 MILAGRO SEMANAL Esta semana señala el comienzo de una especie de desvío litúrgico. Hemos estado escuchando el Evangelio según san Marcos durante este año litúrgico (Ciclo B). Hoy comenzamos a escuchar una larga sección del Evangelio según san Juan que empieza con el milagro de la multiplicación de los panes y peces. Este milagro es un preludio de las declaraciones del Señor, que comenzaremos a escuchar en algunas semanas, en las que Jesús se llama a sí mismo el Pan de Vida. Cada semana somos testigos de un milagro en la Misa. No vemos la multiplicación de panes. Lo que vemos con los ojos de la fe es el milagro de la transformación de elementos comunes, pan y vino, en el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor. Una vez que hemos recibido al Señor, comienza la multiplicación, porque en la Eucaristía se nos fortalece para multiplicar nuestros esfuerzos por alimentar a los pobres, darles refugio a los que no tienen hogar y brindarles consuelo a los afligidos.
