2 MARCH 18, 2018 PSALTER WEEK I From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Another prophecy of His death is made by Jesus in today s Gospel. But a key answer also is given by our Lord on the constant puzzle of our tribulations and tragedies of this life. If God is good - so our train of thinking goes - why do bad tragedies happen to good people? And many people of little faith then conclude: If God is good and sees everything, then why so much evil? Cannot God see? So then, God doesn t exist or doesn t care! To all these questions, God already answered in the Bible: Can the One, who created the eyes, not see? and Can a woman throw away her tiny baby? Even if she does, I will never abandon you. And now Jesus gives us the secret meaning of sacrifices: Unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat. But if it dies, it produces much fruit. The man who loves his life loses it, while the man who hates his life in this world preserves it to life eternal. (Jn 20: 24-25) We do gain paradise when we accept and carry the cross given to us by God when we follow Jesus, so that where Jesus is, we, His servants, will be: in heaven! The solemn feast of Easter is fast approaching. Next Sunday is Palm Sunday, and the Blessed Palms will be distributed at the end of each Mass, so that you may put them in your home next to your Crucifix. Whenever you have a fight (or if tragedy strikes close to home), just look at the Palms of Peace and Glory, kneel in prayer to God, be reconciled to one another with the kiss of forgiveness and pick up the pieces with courage and patience, following the example of Our Crucified Savior. Let us not grow discouraged if we failed sometimes to keep our Lenten observance; let us not give up, but let us renew our promises with stronger resolve or offer another sacrifice. Jesus is worthy of all sacrifices! One of the traditional Easter duties for all Catholics is the annual Confession and Holy Communion according to our Church laws, which I am now quoting for your convenience. Holy Communion can be received twice a day - this is a law given by the late Pope St. John Paul II! The Eucharist fast, excluding water and medicines, should be observed before Communion by abstaining from any food or drink for at least an hour, unless a person is elderly or sick. To receive Communion, the law (Canon 916) says: A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive Communion without prior sacramental confession, unless grave reason is present... in this case, a person is to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible. About the Sacrament of Penance, Canon 960 states: Individual and integral Confession and Absolution constitute the only ordinary way by which the faithful person who is aware of serious sin is reconciled with God and with the Church. About the obligation of confession once a year, Canon 989 says: After having attained the age of discretion, each of the faithful is bound by an obligation faithfully to confess serious sins at least once a year. The obligation of confession is applicable only in the case of grave sins. Venial sins can be forgiven either by communal or private confession, by receiving Holy Communion, non-sacramental penitential rites (like the one at the beginning of Mass), almsgiving, sacrificial actions or acts of charity. But let us keep in mind that the best gift we can give our good Lord is our contrite, humble heart, repentant of all our sins. The Sacrament of Reconciliation, which we usually call Confession, is one of the best Lenten gifts we can give God. Some Catholics feel uneasy about confession for many reasons, such as: 1. I do not go because I forgot the starting formula (Forgive me Father for I have sinned... ) or the Act of Contrition. Do we really think that postponing confession for another year will improve our memory? 2. The Act of Contrition should be expressed in our own wording. Can you imagine if, after a fight, the wife will say to the husband Oh my supreme husband, I am truly sorry to have offended thee, because you are so good and worthy of all sacrifices...etc., etc. It sounds so silly, doesn t it? How simple it is to say in confession: My good Jesus, I m sorry... I ll do better from now on! 3. All mortal sins must be confessed! Sometimes we feel ashamed as if our sins are so horrendous, and we re afraid that we will shock the priests! On the contrary, I m afraid that our priests will shock you, every time their sins are reported in the mass media! Besides being sinners like everyone else, we priests had two full years of studies in Moral Theology and there is not a sin that we have not studied in detail or heard before! Some of us have the feeling that our sins are so serious that God cannot forgive them! Nonsense! The mercy of God is infinitely superior to any of our sins! The worst temptation of the Devil is to convince us that the Spirit of Love of God cannot forgive, and so we do not ask pardon, and remain separated from God in this and (God forbid) in the other life! To facilitate your reception of the Sacrament of Penance, we priests of St. Martha have scheduled over 30 hours of individual confession during Holy Week: Holy Thursday (3/29): 9 a.m. continuously to 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Good Friday (3/30), and Holy Saturday (3/31): 9 a.m. continuously to 7 p.m. Come during these hours, and you will find one of our priests waiting for you in the confessional room, next to the courtyard entrance of the Church. Thank you, for making this year s Fr. Fausto s Festa Italiana a big family success! There was lots of joy and fun as well as good dancing! Above all we would like to thank our Parish Hospitality Ministry, chaired by Beth Cannata, and her team Sharon Carr, Joanne Gonet, Pat Pomfret, Denise Haggerty, Liz Barrett, Loretta Cordella, Maryann Turcotte, Diane Domagala, Lucy Nicandri, Claire Collins, Gioia Palmerio, JoAnn Gallo, Fred Gonet, Bill Konopaske, Norman Pomfret, Joe Palmerio, Al Dilenge and Bill Rex. Also, we would like to thank Tom Landers and the William Stark Jones Foundation, Milwaukee, Wisconsin for their generous annual support of the Feast of Abraham. We welcomed attendees from St. Martha, Temple Emanu-El

3 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT & the Islamic Community of Southwest FL. It was another wonderful example of embracing our differences. Let s consider what Vatican II said some 50 years ago: The Church has also a high regard for the Muslims. They worship God, who is one, living and subsistent, merciful and almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, who has also spoken to men. They strive to submit themselves without reserve to the hidden decrees of God, just as Abraham submitted himself to God s plan, to whose faith Muslims eagerly link their own. Although not acknowledging him as God, they venerate Jesus as a prophet, his virgin Mother they also honor, and even at times devoutly invoke. Further, they await the day of judgement and the reward of God following the resurrection of the dead. For this reason they highly esteem an upright life and worship God, especially by way of prayer, alms-deeds and fasting. Over the centuries many quarrels and dissensions have arisen between Christians and Muslims. The sacred Council now pleads with all to forget the past, and urges that a sincere effort be made to achieve mutual understanding; for the benefit of all men, let them together preserve and promote peace, liberty, social justice and moral values. Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non- Christian Religions, Vatican Council II In regard to our ancestors in the faith, the Israelites (now we commonly refer to them with noun, Jews ), let us be clear about the church teaching. The majority of the Sanhedrin condemned Jesus as a blasphemer because, You, who are only a man, have made yourself God, and they thought sincerely that they were in line with the First Commandment. Jesus tried again and again to convince the leaders of the Sanhedrin of His Divinity: If you do not believe my word, believe in me because of the miracles I make search the Scriptures and you ll find out all about me It does seem to me that the devil has employed every means of destruction and horror against the chosen people of God, from the expulsion from Rome of all Jews (Rabbinical and Christian) in the year 49 A.D. by the Emperor Claudius, to the Holocaust by the German Nazis, and from the terrorists attacks raining on Israel, to the anti-semitism of terrorist Muslims today. The same hatred by Satan and his disciples has followed us Christians (the new Israel) throughout the centuries, because of our Jewish Scriptures and origins: Salvation after all is from the Jews, St. Paul wrote! To be anti-semitic is to be against Jesus, Mary - the most famous Jewish woman, actually the most venerated woman on earth - and all the first Christian martyrs! Let us ponder the prayer, that in the solemn Liturgy of Jesus death on Good Friday, the Catholic faithful implore God: Let us pray for the Jewish people, the first to hear the word of God, that they may continue to grow in the love of his name, and in faithfulness to his covenant: Almighty and eternal God, long ago you gave your promise to Abraham and his posterity. Listen to your Church as we pray that the people you first made your own, may arrive at the fullness of redemption. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. And naturally, let s not forget the Feast of St. Joseph. Happy St. Joseph s Day to all our Italian American friends and family! Just a reminder, please note the following rules that I follow in my 1. I never ask for money for myself in any s, messages, or messenger (which I do not use at all). Asking for money for the church, I only do in person or from the pulpit, as you well know. 2. For all Church correspondence, I only use this pastor@stmartha.org. So if you receive a request for money from any other s, copy them and call the parish office and the police. 3. Look carefully at the spelling of the words, if an alphabet letter has been added, it means that it is a hacker. Read the carefully and look for obvious typos in the body of the , this would indicate that the is fake. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Copyright J. S.
