2 APRIL 23, 2017 From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Last Sunday, we, the St. Martha s faith family, celebrated Our Lord Jesus Christ s triumphant Resurrection from the dead. Thank you for your participation in the liturgies of Holy Week and the Lenten Masses! We clergy were touched by your faith and devotion! Thank you also for your generous collections to the poor, to the Holy Shrines and to our parish. In particular, I would like to thank all the priests for their dedication and endless hours in the confessional, and our good Deacons Bill Ladroga and Pat Macaulay for their liturgical support. Also, I wish to thank the heads of the different parish ministries and their members: our music director, Virginia Bray; our cantors and choristers; our Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Patriarchs, Altar Servers, Ushers, our Sacristans - Susie, Tom and Janet - and the Altar Society Members, who did such a beautiful job in cleaning the church and arranging the flowers in the sanctuary; and, finally, the Maintenance Department, who kept the church grounds and tomb immaculate. The meaning of Jesus resurrection is the assurance of LIFE ETERNAL for all of us, the believers! If we pick up our cross daily and follow the good Lord with love, sacrifice and prayer, then we will live with Jesus ETERNALLY IN PARADISE, first with our soul, and after the second coming and final judgment, with our risen and transformed body! Alleluia! All of us, dear friends, will pick up our bodies from the ashes and dust to which they were reduced, and we will assume our incorruptible and immortal soul and body, and live forever like angels! Let us live in Jesus now, so that we will live forever with Him in Paradise! Right now, we, the Catholic faithful, are proclaiming Jesus second coming every day at Mass: We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again. A billion strong religious people, we Catholics have influenced world history more than any nation or kingdom. Today s Gospel has done more to our proof of the Resurrection than any other, and paradoxically, it does it through the lack of faith of Thomas, one of the 12 Apostles, who very crudely said: I ll never believe the risen Jesus unless I see the mark of the nails on his hands and put my finger in the nail marks and my fist into His side. The ancient followers of Christ were not all cynical, like Thomas, but also the ladies who went to the empty tomb with Peter and John, if they had faith in Jesus prophecy of the Resurrection, why go to check it out? It is instructive to know that only Mary, the Mother of Jesus, did not go to the tomb. She knew, she believed! The Congregation for Divine Worship decreed (May 23, 2000) that Throughout the world, the Second Sunday of Easter will receive the name Divine Mercy Sunday, a perennial invitation to the Christian world to face, with confidence in divine benevolence, the difficulties and trials that human kind will experience in the years to come. Today is Divine Mercy Sunday and St. Martha will have a Holy Hour in our Church at 2:30 p.m. Devotion to the Divine Mercy was promoted by St. Faustina Kowalska, canonized by Pope John Paul II on April 30, The most common prayer of Divine Mercy is the PSALTER WEEK II famous Divine Mercy Chaplet. Other novenas are: The Miraculous Medal, St. Jude Thaddeus, St. Vincent Pallotti, and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is so incredible to me that some Christians still are so much afraid of God s justice that they miss completely the crazy love of our merciful Jesus. Bishop Frank Dewane invites the Catholic community to join him at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, April 30, at Epiphany Cathedral, for an Hour of Remembrance, Yom HaShoah, commemorating the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Parishioners are encouraged to attend this historical hour of remembrance to help keep the Holocaust a part of our collective memory. This diocesan Yom HaShoah will bring together members of the Jewish and Christian communities, as encouraged by the Holy Father, to remember the victims of hate, and to help build a climate of respect where such tragedies may never again be possible. If all Jewish people followed Jesus, why do we still have Jews today? A sizable minority of Jesus co-religionaries followed Him because of His miracles. The Jewish majority, which was divided into several religious, regional and political groups, did not; most notably hostile to Jesus were the Sadducees for political reasons (for fear of provoking a ferocious and violent backlash by the Romans), and the Pharisees, who could not accept Jesus claim of divinity. All these Jewish groups ceased to exist with the destruction of Jerusalem in the year 70 A.D. Mark, Luke and Matthew wrote their Gospels before or soon after the destruction of the Jewish Nation, preserving the historical flavor of Jesus times. A generation later, the final redaction of John s Gospel was written by an eyewitness, but for a Gentile congregation not steeped in the teaching of the Prophets of Jewish Scriptures, and just not cognizant nor interested in historical details, but considering only the remnant of old Israel: The Jews. The Jewishness of the first Christians was supplanted and eclipsed by the overwhelming Gentile converts and by the decisions of the Apostles to forgo circumcisions and Old Testament dietary laws. Besides John had by now reflected on Jesus teachings and expressed it in anti-ethical terms, like daynight, light-darkness, disciples-jews. Anti-Semitism then went from Pagan to the Christian world, and the antithesis Christian-Jews were brought to the most terrible consequences thru humiliation, killing and hatred of the remnant of Israel! The holocaust by the National Socialists (Nazis) in World War II was the culmination of countless years of persecution of our ancestors in the faith: more than half the people martyred in the Nazi extermination camps were Jews. On April 30, let us forge the bond of love and respect with our Jewish sisters and brothers so that the Holocaust will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN and that we, the followers of Jesus the Jew, will always be friends and bound to destroy anti-semitism. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Sebastian, Philip & Jerry Deacons Bill and Patrick; plus Brothers Bill, Tom & Lawrence and Sisters Cathy & Marianne

MARK APRIL 25 Mark is the author of the earliest and shortest gospel account in the Bible. Tradition identifies him with the scriptural person who was a member of the first Christian community in Jerusalem. His mother, Mary, owned a house in Jerusalem, which the Christians used as a place of prayer during Peter s imprisonment under Herod Agrippa I (see Acts 12:12). When Paul and Barnabas returned from their visit to Jerusalem, they took Mark back with them to Antioch in Syria. Later they brought him along as their assistant on a missionary journey. Like him, may we find new ways to proclaim the good news and share Jesus story with others. A Message from our Bishop Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Soon the Diocese of Venice will be taking up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal (CHMA) Collection. This appeal supports the dioceses here in our own country that struggle to make ends meet and to serve the needs of their parishioners. It is through your generosity that many churches are able to keep their doors open and provide essential pastoral services. Home Mission Dioceses often are challenged by priest shortages, parishioner poverty, unemployment, difficult and isolated terrain, religious hostility, and other circumstances that make it difficult to practice the faith. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal strengthens the Church in the United States by providing yearly grants to support programs in Home Mission Dioceses. Your donations help provide liturgical and educational supplies, help provide priests to offer the Eucharist and other sacraments, and support volunteers' and ministers' outreach to over 10,000 men and women in detention facilities. It is precisely your generosity that brings Christ's message of love, compassion, and reconciliation to this often-forgotten population. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal Collection will take place in the Diocese of Venice the weekend of April 29 and 30, Please, be generous in the Collection. Your support makes a difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters right here in the United States. Thank you for strengthening the Church at home. I take this opportunity to assure you and your family of my continued consideration as well as my prayers. Have a Blessed Easter Season! Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
