2 MARCH 17, 2019 PSALTER WEEK II From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Today s Gospel recalls the famous Transfiguration of Jesus in front of His three favorite apostles: Peter, the head of the Apostles; James, the first Bishop of Jerusalem; and John, the youngest, unmarried and last surviving apostle. Jesus showed these three followers His heavenly Glory as they, and we, will see in Paradise. I suspect that, with His Transfiguration, Jesus wanted to teach the three pillars of His community to stand fast during His short Passion and the three-day burial. But it was a miserable failure for Peter, who denied even having known Jesus; and James, who led the rest of the 12 in running away from the Lord. Only John saved the day, sticking up for Jesus, even under the cross; sustaining the Blessed Mother in that most tragic moment of her life. Let us follow the example of John, by committing our souls to follow Jesus. Of course, in our youth, we too started following Jesus with generous hearts, and then, once we are adults, for one reason or another, we fall by the wayside because of our weak human nature...how despondent and discouraged we become when we fail! A young man told me last Lent how he broke his Lenten promise only three days after Ash Wednesday. I told him that Jesus appreciated our positive answer to God s inspiration to start Lent, and Jesus would appreciate even more our humble remorse, and our future Lenten sacrifices, if we do not get discouraged on account of our failures and sins. If we think in depth about our discouragement, we may find that at the root of it is our pride that drives us to disappointment and discouragement when we sin, as if we are perfect and not sinners! When we fail, we should accept what we are, and then ask God for renewed strength and guidance to continue our journey toward paradise. Are you keeping your Lenten resolutions to increase your prayer time and to do penance? Are you getting ready to celebrate the Holy Week and to renew your commitment to Jesus when, at Easter, we will have the renewal of our Baptism Promises? Let us not get discouraged when we fail to keep promises made to Jesus: after all, we are sinners! Let us start anew to renew our Lenten commitment to Jesus. The past is past, what we have is the present, let us live it fully with Jesus. Today is also the feast of St. Patrick, the great apostle of the Irish! The liturgy of the 2nd Sunday of Lent takes precedence over any other saint. But at our tables we celebrate today the glorious St. Paddy Day with joy and some nice toasts! And Tuesday is the solemn feast of St. Joseph, spouse of Mary mother of Jesus. Pope Pius IX declared him patron of the Universal Church, and St. Pope John Paul II declared him guardian of the redeemer; patron of carpenters, of workers and of fathers. Thank you for joining us for our Festa Italiana! There was lots of joy and fun as well as good dancing! We would like to give a big thanks to our Parish Hospitality Ministry, chaired by Beth Cannata, and her team Joanne Gonet, Pat Pomfret, Denise Haggerty, Liz Barrett, Loretta Cordella, Maryann Turcotte, Diane Domagala, Claire Collins, Fred Gonet, Bill Konopaske, Al Dilenge, Bill Rex, Nancy Long, Matt Gentilella, Ivana Higgins, Janine Budesheim, and John Farrell. All parishes in out diocese have received the following warning: It has once again been brought to the attention of the Diocese of Venice that parishioners have received text/ messages from people pretending to be priests and requesting donations in the form of gift cards and/or wire transfers. The messages often greet the person by name and have the priests name in the closing signature of the message; this is a well-crafted and targeted attack on the Church across the country which has hit our Diocese again. These text/ messages are 'spoofed' fakes that should not be responded to or taken seriously by anyone. The best defense against this sort of scam is to raise awareness in the community and not respond or open any worrying attachments. It is recommended that this information is shared with everyone immediately, as this situation requires vigilance on everyone's part. It is Diocesan policy that no priest or staff within the Diocese request donations in the form of gift cards, PayPal, MoneyGram, etc. Without this awareness, some have responded to the spoofed messages, with bad consequences, including loss of funds. There is already an established process in place on how parishioners can make donations and participate in the life of the parish. Whenever a parishioner is worried about any request for money from the parish or a priest, they should immediately call their parish and under no circumstances should they respond to these scam requests. Thank you and have a holy Lenten Journey. Office of Communications 1000 Pinebrook Road Venice, FL Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy: Fathers Patrick, Wojciech, Jan, John & Jerry Deacons Bill, Patrick & Robert and Brothers Tom & Lawrence & Sister Cathy Stations of the Cross every Friday during Lent immediately following the 8:30 a.m. Mass. LECTIO DIVINA Thursdays during Lent Starting on March 7th Br. Geenen Hall at 6:15 p.m. Those who listen to the Word of God and act upon it will enter the Kingdom of God Lectio Divina is the ancient way of praying and listening to The Word of God. With it, generations of Christians have prayed and deepened their relationships with God. Through the listening to the Word of God they have found and done the will of God in their everyday lives. We invite you to join Fr. Jan Rykala, S.A.C. during Lent to learn more about it and follow this way of praying.

(4:1). Copyright J. S.
