2 DECEMBER 30, 2018 PSALTER WEEK I From Our Pastor, Fr. Fausto... My Dear Friends, Today is the Feast of the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary and Joseph. Strangely enough, today s Gospel shows us two parents who lose their only child...and it is strange to us; how could that happen! Let us look at the way the ancient people traveled, usually in Pilgrims groups. The men divided in two groups: one for protection in front of children, and mothers with the donkeys carrying provisions, the second group defending the rear of the pilgrimage. Male teenagers could choose either the group of the men, or stick to their mothers as needed. Joseph assumed that Jesus was with Mary, and the Blessed Mother assumed he was with Joseph. At mealtime, they realized that Jesus was not in the caravan. They rushed back to Jerusalem, searching for him until they found him in the circle of Biblical scholars, who were in awe of the young Jesus incredible wisdom. What a relief! And notice how accurate, but gentle, were Mary s words! And how she put Joseph before herself: Your father and I. Notice also Jesus answer, the third revelation (after the Annunciation and the words of Simeon in the Temple) of his special mission to be Savior of mankind. And all of you, children and teenagers, remember that Jesus was obedient to his parents. Today, all of you who have a family renew your vows to your spouse and your commitment to your children, as children renew their vow of loving obedience to you parents. By the way, a little reminder to divorced (and often remarried) parents: sigh with God a truce of peace with your ex, for the sake and joy of your children! Tuesday, January 1, is a Holy Day of Obligation. I urge all of you parishioners to attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, starting the New Year with Holy Communion as a divine protection for the days to come in this blessed year of the Lord 2019! And remember please: before partying get a designated driver, so that if you drink, you do not have to drive, risking yours or innocent people s lives! If you foresee you will not make Mass on Tuesday, come to a Vigil Mass on Monday, at 4 or 5:30 p.m. On January 1, we Catholics start the new year with the feast of the Blessed Mother of Jesus and people outside our faith wonder why we Catholics do this. As usual they make the same mistake in confusing worship and veneration in the Catholic devotion to Mary. We Catholics worship only one God, the Creator. But we honor and have dear to our hearts, his Mother, and the angels and saints who are in heaven. Mary is at the top of the list of the very few the Pope with the bishops have declared worthy to be followed in our actions. But there is a very open suggestion to all of us Catholics in having this feast of Mary at the very beginning of the new year. We Catholics for thousands of years have always started our actions of any type with prayer, either with a silent prayer to the Holy Spirit or with the only prayer taught us by Jesus, or by the most popular Catholic prayer, the Hail Mary, to intercede with God on our behalf before starting anything: the day, a trip, a study, in short all decisions of every kind. Let s then continue such beautiful tradition in our lives! Some non-catholics ask why an addition was made to the biblical words of the angel, such as Mother of God. After all God is eternal and never born. This objection was voiced by some bishops in the Council of Nicea in the year 325, making fun of those bishops who wanted Mary as the mother of the Incarnate Word, made visible in the divine and human baby Jesus. The Council decreed that one couldn t separate the two natures (divine & human) in Jesus, and because Mary was the mother of Baby Jesus, the title of Mother of God could be used for her. The opposition by some bishops was based on the fact that they thought Jesus appeared to be a man, but was only an illusion of a human body, not a true human being of real flesh and blood, inside whom the second person of the Triune One God was hidden. How ironic that, when alive, Jesus was condemned by the Sanhedrin because being a mere man he made himself divine, but after the incredible resurrection showing his divinity, Jesus was worshipped as God, to the point of denying his humanity! The root of the problem is in our mental inability and lack of faith in accepting the two mysteries of the Trinity and of the Incarnation. How time flies! In our lives we have seen so much: World War II, Nazi and Communist dictatorships (and the end of both), endless conflicts and wars! War is still being fought in Iraq, Syria and peace is so elusive! Let us pray for peace everywhere. We have grown accustomed to television, computers, jet planes, Nintendo, AIDS (in Africa and South Asia is still a true and frightening epidemic!), ISIS with Muslim fanaticism, immoral and irresponsible entertainment industry, a rising tide of abortion and crime and, let us not forget, the transformation of the Catholic Church after Vatican II. We have witnessed the proclamation of a dogma, an Ecumenical Council, the shooting of a Pope, and a few U.S. presidents (one was even killed, remember?), and attacks on our country by terrorists. And all of this in the short span of our lives! When we close our eyes forever, we will be so tired of this worldly mess and quite happy to go to heaven! Let us get ready then to enter PARADISE with a life in compliance with the will of God. One way to make ourselves closer to God is to correct our evil habits, and it is traditional, on New Year s Day, to make good resolutions to correct what is wrong in our lives, from being overweight or overdrinking, to skipping Masses and prayers. The most common mistake made by many people is either to make too many resolutions, or to address a bad habit so hard to crack with our own strength alone, that we get discouraged, and then desist (like losing weight or stopping smoking!). Let us instead zero in on only one vice, and go at it with All our prayers, and with all our will power: in a few years, we will be SAINTS because our call from God is clear: Be perfect as my Father in Heaven is Perfect! What a tall order! And what human being can dream to be perfect like God is? Still the divine command stands firm, because all our life we must make the daily effort to become Christ-like, without slacking off our insatiable thirst for God. We are the region made not to follow rules, but to follow a person: Jesus. Unfortunately, we become so complacent and set in our life and our habits that we risk to lose God to the unceasing attacks of the devil: Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent, the devil, is prowling around you like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). In our

3 THE HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH complacency of being a Good Catholic (Sunday Mass, envelopes in the collection, etc.), we do become lukewarm Christians, risking the reproach of God in the last book of the Bible: I know your works; I know that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot. So, because you are lukewarm, neither hot or cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, I am rich and affluent and have no need of anything. And yet, do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind and naked. I advise you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich, and white garments to put on so that your shameful nakedness may not be exposed, and buy ointment to smear on your eyes so that you may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and chastise. Be earnest, therefore, and repent. (Rev 3: 15-19) We priests wish to thank you all, dear parishioners, for all your prayers, financial support, cards, gifts and donations given to us, and to our poor, this past Christmas! And a huge thank you to our Ushers, Altar Servers, Lectors, Sacristans, Organists and Choirs for their splendid performances during the Christmas season. Next Sunday, we will have our wonderful volunteers at the doors of the Church Collecting for Caritas. Caritas is an organization that, in conjunction with the downtown Churches, distributes checks or vouchers to help the poor in our downtown area! This is all done by the volunteers of St. Martha and the downtown churches. Please be as generous as possible and God will bless you many times. Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Dewane has introduced a new eight month marriage preparation process into the Diocese beginning January called Witness to Love. It is a mentor-based program in which engaged couples find a mentor couple (not related) to work with them. The mentor couple must have been married at least five years, be active church members, and have a marriage that the engaged couple admires. We hope that if you are asked by an engaged couple to walk with them in this process, you will say yes. Training is provided and you could be helping a couple prepare for a better marriage for the rest of their lives together. No theological background is required! We are also in need of a Marriage Preparation Coordinator. It could be one person or a couple. The coordinator keeps track of the couples and provides the one-time training for mentor couples. Training will be provided by the Diocese. If you re interested in helping engaged couples in this important ministry, please contact Deacon Bill Ladroga through the Parish Office.
